Leak", h inventor of tb; i vsten and the principal .romoter of the enterprise. Mr. Lke and John Brad ley are now in Nw York refecting plant rortha Uying of a trial tube be tween N.ark aoJ Jersey City and look ing after other matter preliminery to building the whole plant. It ia generally agreed among the lead en that the capital tfix k of the company w ill be f 10,000,301. lt the d.Ui1 con cerning the dinpotuiou of the stock have not been definitely settled. It waa originally intended to wll abwea far about 23 cent- apiece in order to make the company jocular. A circular waa wnt out not km since to a number of in dividual which aUted that there ia now enough buine carried on between Kew Yotk and Philadelphia, of a kind that caa be handled by tha tube, to declare a dividend of 25 perceat. upon a capital lock ft 10,003,000. '- " Mr. Lake basaix patents, all taken out on July 8 of the present year, two of which rtain to the switch-, two to the receiver and two the "bluett of air" syrtetn. Twelvts eminent engineers from different f t" the country have beta asked to eaamioe the lobes and iUap IHiitenancea. and all have pronounced the system so far a their knowledge goes. THE PLAN OK ARHASCiEMKXT. The tube will be two frrt in diameter . n,l made of comier. They are to be Uid underground in a pretty direct line be tween the two cities. The Delaware river w ilt be crossed in the ne'u hborhood of Taconr, the tubes being laid on the bot tom of Hie stream. Packages, pai-n and letters will dispatched from another and the switches will be manipulated by the agent i who Bend them. For instance, if a bundle of papers is put in the tube at Philadelphia destined for the way sta tion at Trenton, the sgeut here, as be tarts the bundle, turns the switch at Trenton, by merely touching a button. If the switch turns H right an automatic Land, working on the principle of a com mon enunciator, so indicates. The little cirs which carry tie packag es are prevented from telescoping each other by nietnn of blocks of compressed air. The receiver into which the cars drop or are stopped at the end of the end of the journey is also a compressed air apparatus. Mr. Leak the inventor, lias said that, although it seems a simple thing, this was one of the very hardest to make work succejHfully. The velocity of the cars is four roil a minute, or eight times the speed of an ordinary express train. How to stop the car without smashing its contents was a knotty prob lem, but compressed air solved it. It is proposed to make the rite lor transportation reasonably low, and by so doing large part of the telephone and telegraph bntiness between the two cit ies w ill be captured by the tube people, since a car can be a hirled to New York and back again in forty-five minutes, a Irtter can be senHo a business firm and an answer received about as quickly as a telegraph message and answer can now b exchanged. Banking bouses w ill be greatly benefitted by this quick cotnniu nica'ion, as w ill newspapers which now nse special railroad trains to ret the.r edi tions out of the city. Too Near Home. It is a common saying among city peo ple that the "native" in country places have little or no "eye for the beauties of nature." It would be well sometimes for the critic to put themselves in the "natives' " place. A party of yonng eople had a picnic on a high hill, at the foot of which stood a lonely farm house. On their way down late io the afternoon, one ot the company aw the farmer's wife regarding her from the open door with sme interest. 'Find itwuth while, did ye?" inquired the woman. "Yes, uideed," replied the girl, enthu siastically. "It's such a beautiful view : you must go up there very often to gel rested, don't you ?' "Well, no, not to say often. I nerer go exoppt when he's away, and the cows take a aotion not to come down without my climbin' np to fetch 'em," resjionded the woman dryly. "Why, you don't know what you , miss," persisted the enthusiast. "If I wi re in your plane I should go tip there every pleasant afternoon." "I calc'late," said t'.ie fanner's wife, in a tone of withering scorn, "that when you'd lived here a sjiell, backed up onto that mounting, with all the sun thet outen yoarback w inders, jroa'd feel pret ty nigh the same as I do." She ran up stairs, g.it a revolver, fired three shots out of a window, and callhd loudly for Mr. Smith, a neighbor, that robbers were breaking in her house. Mr. Smith, bearing the shots and the lary railing, ran to the rescue.
