The Doctor's Skeleton. "Every family is suipwc'. to have a skeleton in its closet," wi'l Dr. Wheeler, of Wit hata, Kansas to a party of friends who met liim at '.he Union IVpot last night, MVS the Kansas City Tunr. "I had one in my ciowt until thin week, when I shi;.i it t. the Michigan State University. I don't want lo f-e it soon Bruin. -It ha;poiH-.l like this: Many years aso w hen 1 eomineiKtJ the practice of ux-di.-ine in a small Missouri town, Hie Jatn-t U.ys ai.l us a vinit. Tiny raided thubank ani pot away with nix thousand dollar, 1ml Urine Jr.-lty pcneral on both Bidet. I had a revolver, and .luring the general excitement t-liot one of the robbers. He was dead when we picked him up. A finer ppecimen of physical manhood I have never teen. The natives in the little Missouri villape nude no ob jection when I claimed the jo ith's skel eton as my prize. "Last week, one rainy rightabout U o'clock, genuine, old-fabioned front iersman came to my olt'u. He asked my name, and then inquired if I had a skeleton in my closet. Ilis face was bearded and sunburnt, but there was something alwnt him that reminded me much of the young man I had killed many years ln fore. I was alone in the oilier, and I didn't like the color of the visitor's eye. However, I answered his question in tle ailirmative. "It me see the skeleton " said my quver visitor. "It would scarcely do to refuse. I walked to the rear of the office, where there was a fiuuil table out of sight , my visitor. I drew out from my desk a revolver, the same one that had ended the career of the youthful bandit years lx-fore. Holding it in my hand, I stepjxd to the closet, threw open the door, and remarked with as much coolness as I could commnni : " 'There is the skeleton '.' " " Tut up your revolver, remarked the stranger. 'I won't hurt yoa. If I had wanted to shoot you I would have killed you when I came into the office. I have just been down to Okluhoma, and am on niy way back to Tennessee. I heard the story of your killing one of the gang, and as near as I can make out it was my hoy that was killed. He ran away from home w hen only twelve years old, and I never heard of him after that. I don't hold any grud aguiust you. 'You did w hat was right, I suppose. Hut I thought I would take this chance to see what is left of the poor boy.' "I then showed the stranger the skele ton, which was handsomely mounted, and described the raid as briefly and penlly as possibly. "The old pioneer's remark as he frazed upon all that was left of his boy was, 'Well, he was a big fellow, wasn't he ?' Hold it to the Light. The man who tells you confidentially just w hat will cure your cold is prescrib ing Kemp's l'.ilsatn this year. In the preparation of this remarkable medicine lor coughs and colds no ex pense is spared to combine only the best and purest in gredients. Hold a bottle of Kemp's Bal sam to the light and look through it ; no tice the bright, clear look ; then com pate with other remedies. Price 50c, and $1 Success. There is but one failure, and that is not to le true to the best one knows. To ns and to our race there is but one fail ure, and that is sin. Sin is a missing of the mark, a violation of the law, aswerv ing of the line. Hut he w ho walks in the narrow path, he who obeys the eternal law, he w ho aims his arrow at the gold, cannot f.iil. Young men, yon ran do this. You may Im? poor ; you may lead lives of struggle ; vour occupation may run coun ter to many or the natural delights of youth ; you may live in the midst of a complex and exacting civilization ; you may i"e no relief, no outlook to a tedious and dull routine. Well, boar it all and bate no jot of heart or hop, for in spite of all you need never fail. For all of us an inexorable limitation, an inexorable weariness, lies at the bases of life. Yet you may succeed lietter than many a mighty king ; and you need never fail, because you need never become the fet tered thralls of sin. lie good and do good, and you will have won something better than a foi tune or a coronet. To do this may not save you from abuse, or oppos-ition, or earthly loss ; but if this and a thousand other calamities come upon you, you will be on the promontory at whose base the tide-waves break in vain. Look, I say, at the cross of Christ and study all that it means, and you will understand the meaning of your life. Look at a cathe dral from w ithout, and the windows are dull and discolored and meaningless ; but step inside the hallowed edifice, and they glow with gules and amethyst, and tinge the sunlight w ith the grandeur and pathos of sacred histories. Se it is with human life. It often looks to us dingy and inexplicable ; but step within the sanctuary of faith, and tiod's eternal sunlight making the whole edifice radiant w ith eternal beauty and with significance streams in with many-colored glories of divine mercy and human heroism of toil. To-morrow, or next day, or a few morrows hence, death will crumble away the earthly temple; but death will take us by the hand into another temple, which needs no sunset colorings, because it shines with the w hite radiance of ternity, and therein our od himself is sun and moon. The judge examined the case and decided thus : "The leg that had the oil rag on it was hurt ; the cat could not use that leg ; in fact it held up that leg and ran with the other three legs. The three unhurt lego, therefore, carried the fire to the cotton, and are alone culpable. The injured leg is not to be blamed. It ia not only a wise but ft happy thing to make tbe best of life, and always look on the bright aide for one's own sake, but it in a bleesing to others. A little ser mon on this subject was unconsciously preached by a child one day which Ex uminer tells as follows: A man met a little fellow on the road carrying a basket of blaeberries, and said to him, "Sammy, where did you get such nice berries?" " Over there, sir, in the briers !'" "Won't your mother be glad to see you come home with a basketful of such nice ripe fruit?" "Yes, sir" said Sammy; "she always seems glad when I hoil np the berries, and I don't tell her anything about the briers in my feet. " Ttie man, rode on. Sammy's remarks had given him a lesson, and he resolved that henceforth he would try to hold up the berries and say nothing about the briers. Where The Old Ships Co. A man stepped into one of the ship' ping odices on front street the other itay to have a look at the Murine Rfjiiler. An old sea captain who had been reading it remarked, as the visitor laid the sheet aside after an apparently fruitless inspec tion, "Don't find what you were looking for, eh r "No," was the answer. "I was looking for the B , but she isn't listed in this numlier." "Old ship?" "Yes ; 1 sailed in her twenty ycais ago." "Oh, well, then, she belongs to the (iennans by this time." "How's that ?" "Well, the Germans don't build ships lfantwiHe wooden ones so much as other jioople do. They buy second-hand shiiis, and they do most of their buying in America. The (Jerinan merchants op erate on smaller capital than ours, and they can't or won't put as much money into timber as they do here. They have a sharp eye for bargains, too, let me tell you, and when they find a tub that's somewhat slow or leaky, but presentable and cheap, they buy her, copper-bottom her, and start her on her travels again There's lota of American built ships fly ing the Dutchman's flag at our wharves. Some Norwegians buy 'em, too, but it's mostly Germans that get 'em. This throws a light on old ships, but the pins, pianos and sewing machines are still to be accounted for. Xrtc Yvrk Sun. W, of Bridgeport, Connect! cut who was returning from England on an ocean steamer. One night he dream ed that his wife, who was then in Bridge port, opened the door of his stateroom, looked hesitatingly in, and then came forward and kissed him. When he awoke in the morning the man who occupied the upper berth in his stateroom looked down and said : "You're a pretty fellow to let a woman come in here in the night and kiss you." Pressed for an explana tion he described the scene which he bad experienced. Arrived at home, he was asked by bis wife: "Did yon receive a visit from me on such a night T I made you one. I was worried because of the reported storms that night. I dreamed I went out on the ocean and came upon a great black steamship, I went up the side and along the corridor and opened your door. I sa w a strange man looking at me from an upper berth. I was afraid at first, but finally I stepped in and kissed you." St. Louis Globe-DrrmocraL During the honeymoon they had been sitting and sighing and talking poetry in the balcony for three hours, all of which time he had both of her hands tightly clasped in his. Finally she broke forth : "Algernon, dearest, I want to ask yon something." "Ask me a hundred a thousand a million things!" he exclaimed in reply. "Well, Algernon. I've got an awful cold in niy head," she continued, "and if I draw one of my hands aaa to use my pocket handkerchief, wculd you think it unkind of me?" Peril ap no local disease has puzzltd and baiiled the medical profession more than nasal catarrh. While not immedi ately fatal it is among the most distrees ng and disgusting ills the flesh is heir to and the records show very few or no cases of radical care of chronic catarrh by any of the multitude of modes of treatment until the introduction of F.ly's Cream Balm a few years ago. The suc cess of this preparation has been most gratifying and surprising. FOR AND 1 IMFANTSIHVALIDS.
