The -aptiin, the mate, and neverul of the passerge-s were moving mid moping like gob. ins over the brass rail at the break of the poop, in search of the .maning phantasm. It was the chief mate of this ttame 4iip from whose deck we sighted the mirage who tola me the story. He was third mate of a nv handsome t-lipjier barque, bound to . An interesting bit of Indian war history-of this vicinity is brought out by the presenta'ion to Huir Tost, G. A. ll., at Lawreneeburg, of a jtowder horn, or.ee the properta of the Indian Chieftain Tecumseh. This horn was carried slung across Tecumseh' shoulder in the famous battle of the Thames in 1813. It was presented to the Tost by Henry Morris, of lawreneeburg. He is a son of Wm. Morris, better know n to Ohio Valley pio n-ers as "Indian Bill," who figured in many savage and bloxly encounters. After the great fight, seventy-six years .go, "Indian Bill" found the body of the slain warrior. The powder horn still .tUched to the siring around Tecum seh's neck, lay on his breast. The scout removed it, and preserved it as the moet sacred of his relics.. At bis death, a few years ago, he presented it to his son Hen ry. The horn was cut from the head of the first buffalo Tecumseh shot. He cate fully seraed and polished it, and displaved a great deal of skill and ingen uity in fitting a liottom 1 1 it and shaping the mouth. The entire surfai-e of the re ceptacle is covered with Indian charac ters and legends. Mr. Morris haa anoth er and a more gory and ghastly trophy of that famous battle. It is a strip of skin cut from the middle of Tecumseh' back. The old sett iers felt about the same sav age satisfaction in cutting up and mutila tine the liodies of their slain red foes, as the Indians did inst-aluing. After taking the horn off Tecmnseh's body, old " In dian Bill" turned the chieftain on his face, and with his seal ping-knife cut a strip of skin several inches w ide off the hack dow n the entire length. This strip w as cured, and for the remainder of Bill's life did service as a razw strop. Indian Bill Morris, at the lime of his deth, in Switzerland county, Ind., a few years aeo, was U years old. When only sev en years old, living w ith his parents near what became the sight of Lexington, Ky. he was stolen and carried into captivity by the Indians. Two white men were taken prisoner with him. When the party reached what is now Chiilicothe, Ohio, then a great Indian encampment, the two white men wereskinned alive by the squaws of the village, and then slow ly roasted to death. The Ixiy w as made a slave by an old squaw, and suffered in credible hardships. When she died Bill fell to the kit of another old woman, who devised even uore fiendish treatment for him than his first mistress. Bill was washing hominy at the river one day when be was .bout fifteen years old, when the old woman struck him with a club. The infuriated lad wrenched the weapon from her and d;alt her a blow that knocked her senseless into the river and she was drowned. The boy was followed for three days and nights hy the savages, and finally escaped by hiding himself in a hollow log that was floating down the Ohio river with other drift wood. When he finally reached the set tlement of Cincinnati, he narrowly es caped being shot for an Indian, so close ly did ha resemble one. He finally got back to his pirenU, wbo bid long mourn ed him aa dead. From that long captiv ity among the Indians he got that im placable hatred of tht red man which distinguished him in after life. For many years, in company with Daniel Bjone and other noted pioneers, Bill followed little else than Indian trails, and no less game than a aava? redskin satisfied his hatred. He was one of the bravest sol diers under Colonel Dick Johnson, and killed nine Indians himself in the battle of the Thames, When he saw Tecumseh fall under the unerring aim of a comrade he rushed forward and secured the pow der horn, and the strip of skin oil the dead chiefs back. The Jersey cow r.tns'uVrrri ; re-emi-nuit'y as a 'i.tter cow, with her tin st profitable ti-e in that direction, on ac count of the jarge ptoportiou ifcitam contained in her milk. Consumers of cheese need not be told that its excel lence depend-t almost wholly on the quality of the milk from which it ia pre pared, as is further well iudicted by the commercial term of cream cheese, skim cheese, t-tc, according as the oiilk from which it was made may have been whole milk or skimin-d and ribbed of is cream, it wie ituik tie. "ior in i rr, the cheese must be equally so, and will grade according to its richness or defic iency in cream. Many persons are of the opinion that cream w hich baa once been aenerated can never lie so well mix ed again w ith the milk that a portion of the fatty matter will not flow out with the whey, thus making, the cheese lea rich. Thia haa given rise to aonie discus sion as to whether rich Jersey milk can be profitably made, into cheese without skimming. According to the late Professor Arnold, while the Jersey i emphatically a butter cow, her milk isrit b in chtese matter and can, without the waste of its buttery matter, be convent d into cheese aa licit aa English Stilton. Commenting on Ihe alove, H.mtd's liairyinan aa a : "Profes sor Arnold was speaking of m w, warm milk, ahnoft immediately front the cows, when the solids are in the most erltct emulsion, hence mow of the globules ol fat will !e held by the rennet. With mixed milk brought o the factory once ! a day the case would be different." l'rac I ticl home cheese makers universally agree that the sooner the milk is set for cheese making after it has U-en drawn from the cow, the mote of butter fat the cheese w ill contain. Those v ho are to have early litters of sprsng pigs must give the brood sows prop.tr food and treatment during the winter months. The first rtquisite is a gisxl shcller, and a clean, wholesome sleeping place. The neit is a reasonable amount of liberty. It w ill nut do for to keep a brood to shut up continuously in a small pen, even if it is kept reason ably clean. Sh ; will become sluggish and inert, with lione of the vigor and muscular stamina needed to prodjee and rear healthy pigs. A certain amount of exercise every day is necessary. If she. will not take her daily " constitutional " of her own accent, it is Ix-st to diive her out. Nothing is better d.iring miid, open weather than the run of a lot, w here she may root to her bean's content. Neve put a ting in the nose of a brood sow. The lood should be abundant, but not of a fattening character. Milk, bran and middlings, with, small modicum of oil meal, varied frequently by boiled turnips and carrots, beets, or other roots, clover hoy, choptied short and mixed with the cooked ration, and in coid weather a small proportion of corn n.eal, w ill keep the animal in good, thristy condition. It is well to remeiiilier ttiat swine are om nivorous, and an occasional morsel of animal f.nl is always acceptable. The " iighls," entrails, and other waste mate rial of a slangier house, when attainable, are desirable additions to the animal di etary. It is well to keep a mixture of silt, chaiconl, and a lilt. e sulphur in a tr-tigh, wlnre the so' can help herself at will. U is always liest to keep br. oi sows separate from the rest of the herd. This is specially iuqieralive as the time for farrowing approaches. , A Family Gathering. Have you a father ? Have you a moth er ? They manage dinners for poor children a trifle more economically in F. iiriburgh than elsew here. In K linbnrgh it is found possible to snply for a l.aif penny a w holesome meal of vegetable broth and bread. Scotch children thrive on the various savory thick soups of many ingredients for w hich the cuisine of the country is celebrated, and unfortunately soup of any kind, clear or thick, is rare ly prepared in the home of the English poor. Solid meat, bread and j otatoes, form the staple diet. In too many cases in England bones are on'y regarded as uselul to the rag and bone man ; in Scot land such waste is rare, even among the P'torest.
