What Docs McClnty Mean ? Perha it will be news to a good many persons to be told that tne iilernml McGinly business is all about m ballad which narrates the ininhles taken by Dan McGinty. "Down went McGinty" has arrived at toe dignity of being "the" gag of the day. It is now 172 years since the Quaker As sembly of Pennsylvania ordered that none hut English-speaking immigrants should be the subjects of naluraiizMjon. Not satis fied wftfc tbe workings of this law the stirs body providi.'d. a few years Uter, that every Jbreignerto the En'.ieii governnjeut arriv ing after the paseagw of the act should pay a duty of iorty-shiniiifs. aud swear allegiance to Great Britain and the province. There and other nusiurrs discouraging the pro spective immigrants who fell Within their scope, were ali aimed at the Germans, who, for sme reason or other, seemed possessed of a wild ambition to land on the western shore of the Iieiaware- Prior to tbe year 1727 more than 50,1 of ibem were snugly estab lished in tbe Quaker province. In spite of severe laws more were coming by every ship sod the followers of Penn were greatly dis turbed in spirit at the invasion. Strange things have come to pass since then. The Q laker ha vanished. Tnere remains nothing to tell the story of hia for mer greatness but the quaint old burying ground on Arch street, and a doz ia faded shad-bslly coats, heirlooms in as many Phil adelphia garrets. He perished in no great tumult of arms, nor by the march of tny (estiieace. He was neither indolent nor lacking in shrewdness - lie d d not starve to death, nor did tbe Germans mo - much as crowd him. He died simply because he was to good to live a melancholy warning which has not been lost upon his successors in Pennsylvania politics. But the proscrib ed German stolidly bided bis time. He came, paid his duty, aud. staved. He took p rseasion of the rich ilirma along the Sus quehanna, tbe Lehigh and Juniata, and till ed the fjorious valleys which leak down to tbe nvera. He beg.n to have things his own way, and when the new order was established, after the Revolution, he held in his hands the po litical power of the great State which he had turned itita a garden where the gods might dwell. The most timorous Quiker. tearful of German ascendency, could scarcely have had a prevision of the complete triumph at tained by his Teutonic rival at the begin- uiu,; of the present century. Tbe Quaker j was already lit Je more than a memory ; the tlerman the potent fact of the social asd po litical order. But lo! when the victor pro claimed his conquest it was in a strange tongue; he nu longer thought nor felt ms a German. Tbe fatherland was not beyond seas, but here Germany and all i:s inter ests aud family ties, was no more to him than it was to Patrick, lie bad become a Pennsylvania Dutchman. The Teutonic iiumigraut brought with him to Pennsylvania otily the limited vo cabulary of a German peasant nearly 200 years ago. His pronounciation of the native tongue was often inaccurate, of the English worse, and tbe devia'ioo from the vernacu lar has increased with every generation until all semblance of the original is in many cases lost. ''Topper," meaning hurry ; "fat"' forward ; "noouer," under ; "fatties," done or finished, are a few examples of many words not easily accounted for. Neither a lerman nor an Englishman wotfld make much of grombera." Ths fjrmer would say kartoflel, the latU potato. But our Pennsylvania Dutchman examines the tuber and, afer much smelling and tasting, de cides that it is a berry. -If it isn't a birry vaa der deihitiker is it?" said one of them to roe th other dir. aud grom'x'ra." broils it, doubtless led to his word, in spite of my friend's explanation, through a foy recol lection of h's remote ancestors, who named it die grendhirne. the ground pear. With words denoting hesitancy or doubt the Pennsylvania Dutchman is well provided from over the Rhine, but when be wishes to express the idea of promptness, certainty or quickness of perception he is obliged to use the language of bis Anylo-Saxon neighbor, from whom he learned about all he knows of these qualities. To tbe same source a!.o dyes he go for his profanity, once he becomes really ugly. But that proves nothing one way or the other. The Ene'.isb is, after all, the only language in which a man can swear and get anything like satisfaction. The proverb which bids us beware the fury of the patient man is a gl one to remember in dealing with him. for he is slow to wrath. He is essentialy a peasant ; in its original and least offensive meaning a boor. He has no word denoting courtesy. In good will and friendliness he abounds; of the little cial amenities and court grades which add so much to the life of all other people, be knows nothing. For example: Although it my be stated as a generalization that all of tliem can speak English, association with thera is 'iaely to prove embarrassing if you do not know their language. Y'ott may bean invited guest at their house, but nil conversation among themselves wid be in their own native Dutch, without any translation or a polices to yon. And taey are great talkers. It would seem impossible for rudeness to go farther: yet no offense bss been intended, and they would not understand your indig nation if expressed. Of course they not neglect you, and will talk much to you. But every comment not particularly addressed to you will be in tbeir own language. Tbey will argue and d'spute among themselves with great volu bility up in tbe subject in baud, but no mat ter bow deeply you may be interested in the matter yon wiil have to guess at what they are saying. Y'ou become indignant, and feel like picking up your hat and leav ing, but ir.at would be a great mistake if it is at all near a meal time. Y'ou will never get a better dinner than they serve lo their farm har.di every day of the year. Stay to dinner and supper and you will forgive tbem everything. Talk about your French cooks humbug! Leaving out the one item of beef, which they boil, roast or fry uutil it is as dry, flat and tasteless as a chip, tbe Pennsylvania Dutchwomen are tbe best rooks in tbe world. If the beef is unsatisfactory yon can 1 ave a slice of fried ham that would almost co ivert a vegetarian ; potatoes will be whip ped into a mountain of savory cream ; the big Lima beans will dissolve at the touch of the tomrue ; the corn, tomatoes. asragus all things that ever grew in garden tir in fiel j have lost not one breath of their fresh ami dainty Savor. The bread is ms white mnd light as new-fallen snow, the butler was i churned yesterday, and tlie preserves and jellies are miracles of delicious sweetness. At such a feast you fore your bodily limi tations, but eat as if you are a spirit that occupies all space and can never be filled. Rider Haggard' Latest and Best Sto ry. . Thera a cry few families in town that have emraped the grip!, and from all sec tions cf Ihe county we hear of its pretence. Not a single case baa terminated fctaiiy up to date, aitbougb hundreds of people insist that they were "sick enough, to die." The disease appears t' fca tlie tightest gripre ononrcouury otBciaia. Hia booor. Judge Kaer, was one of its first ictims. County Commissioner Wagner was the next to suc cumb. His colleague, George Xeff, Lus la bored with it for the past U-n days, and continues to talk ms though hi throat con tained a iiun-.lier erf sto; that shut oiT his voice when least expected. The Democratic member of the board, Charlie WiiliaiucOD, suppose! that be waa exempt from the an noying epidemic, but be has been quietly snevzicg at home since Saturday. Clerk Hi'eman had only a homeopathic dose and hopes to be io good conjhuofi for tbe spring campaign. Treasurer Black, like a good secret society man, got tbe grippe and wer.t home and gave U to all the members of his family. Sheriff McMilien, sneezsd so often and so violently thai he might have been arrested for disturbing tlie peace, had it not been that his deputy. Mill McMillen, joined Lira in each sternutation. Eegister and Re corder Swank attributes hia speedy mwvery to the quantify of hot pennyroyal tea be consumed. Prothonotary Horner Las ae quired nearly all the grippes going, but de clines the ouly one with a French prefix. We had indulged the hopa- that our craft was to enjoy immunity, but when tba devil didn't show up Monday morning wo were again compelled to murmur, "Twas ever thus, etc" The Vienna correspondent of tbe Medical trtrt, describing the ravages of the disease in EiiApe, says : " One in a family may be very ill, while all the others enjoy immunity. Agiin, whole families are laid down in rapid succes sion, and in others the half of the family may be exempted. It has no decided preu liction for sjre or sex. although the very old are believed to escape its ravages. The incu bation jeriod is definitely fixed at two daj s. while the prodromal symptoms are but a few hours, whose description is givenas prostra tion, headache, shivering, etc., as given in other infectious diseases. Tbe varieties of the fever itself are divided into three groups. First, Those with pure nervous symptoms. as headache, pains in the Lmbs. neuralgia, pains in trunk, as in pleuritis. The respira tion arfd pulmonary mucous membrane nor mal, as well as alimentary canal. This form is tbe most common, and has on many oc casions been diagnosed as typhoid. Second, The catarrhal form ; bronchial catarrh, tueezirg, continuing several days after the fever subsides. Third. Gastric ; catarrh of the ailmentary tract, with persistent vomit ing. Besides these varieties a great number of other symptoms are given, common to ail. as giddiness, byperaestliesia. etc., which soon disappear. The temperature rises rapidly to sOor Oi fC. (104" to lOoJ13 F.) ; contin ues at this about two days, and rapidly falls. Tlie duration of the fever is three days ; sel dom five or six. Very little alteration of tbe spleen is observed. Convalescence is very variable, and seems to depend more on the intensity of tbe attack. Many feel them relves tit for work the day after the fever has subsided, while others suffer from nervous or catarraha! symptoms for days after. Vlck's Floral Guide. We have received from James Vick. Roch-e-ter N. Y, his Florol Guide, whico in beauty of appearance and convenience of ar rangement surpasses anything in this line which we hae ever had the privilege of seeing before. It is a pamphlet eight by ten inches in size, and with the covers, which are by no means tbe Vast important part of it, contains an even one hundred paes. Al though called a "floral guide, ' it is devoted lo vegetables as well, and includes as full a list and description of lioth liowers, vegeta bles and also small fruits as could be brought within the compass of a book sf this size. In all that the Vkks have undertaken their aim seems to have leen to atiain as near to absolute perfection as pjasible, and probably no one ever did so mach towards bringing the cultivation of th wen to the high standard which it has now attained as did the head of this firm. The firm takes the tame pride in raising choice vegetables as in developing attractive varieties of flowers, and after using their seeds for a number of years we a.e able to recommend thera in the highest terms. We advise all our readcars to send 10 cents for the Guide (which ran be deducted from first order;; and if there are any of our lady friends who can succeed in grom inga natural rose which will compare in beauty with the New Sniped Rose shown in tbe illustration, me should like to receive an iu -.Station to call and s- it. The ilEaLt wishes to add its testimony to Ihe superior quality erf the seeds and bulbs funiisiied by Mr. Ykk. For more than tweuty years we have been customers of his and have yet to receive a seed that refused to grow. Husband Items. Mr. George F. Anman recently moved into the bouse owned by Mra. At the election in Ohio last November six members of the Legislature were elected as distinctively representatives of the organised labor of the State. It now appears that among the first members of the Leushuure eaptured by Cjlvin S. Brice were these six, who were supposed to hold the balance cf power between adherents of Brice ar.d his Democratic opponents. Rriee's plan was to make one of tbe six Speaker of tbe House and in this movement he was successful The result is that all the immediate repre sentatives of organized lidxr in the Ohio Legislature stand pledged to support one of tbe worst representatives of capitalized mon opoly in the country for Tnited States Sen ator. A Supreme Court Decision. The Supreme Court has just rendered a de cision sustaining Ihe validity of a deed of separation entered into voluntarily by a hus band and hia wife. Richards pr.xlu.-ed a voluntary deed of separation at Ihe bearing that had been exe cuted in March, lS'u;, which, iu cot.sidera lion of certain money and property that was then transferred by the husband to the wile, the latter agreed to release the former from all claims she may otherwise have bad on him. The lower court refused to acknowl edge the legality of the deed, but tbe Su preme Court his reversed this and decides Ilia! such deeds have been frequently recog nizl as legal, and that the wife, having rua.le the contract for non-support and non interference, was estopped from suing her husband for support.
