Tiik extent of the Johnstown horror will, in all probability, never 1 accur ately known, but enough in known defi nitely to stamp it the mwt appalling dis aster ever experienced in tbig country. f the proajieroua and busy little city and iti environ ; ita houses and store ; its iii'.lln and marts of trade, all that can tie said is, "the floods came and swept them away." The very foundation are obliterated, and nothing but a few at ot tered buildings remain a monument to maik the site w here thrift aud energy, kill and industry made their home. The devastation is comfilete and irredeema ble. 1 nsurance is obtained aaiuHt the ierii of fire, but apiint the peril of flood insurance is not eonteia plated. It is rarely the caxe that something of value is not (tared when fire devastates our iioiue, but here nothing was saved from the Hood. They who preserved their lives preserved nothing else. Scarce a ijiii ii v but lost relatives; and husband less mothers and fatherless children are left without food or shelter or a ciiange of cluthing. l.ven the men that were left are temporarily deprived of the means of earning their bread, for the mills and the rIio and other resorts of industry have no lonpT an existence. The dreadful truth is that the city has ceased to exist. lint there is a future for Juhnxtown. Her remaining citizens, sorely stricken as they are. have not given way to de spair, nor set them down idly to bewail their losses. Sigus of pluck and energy and recUH-ra.;ive power are alreaJy being show n. The lethargy of grief is giving way to he ix, and men with aching hearts are putting aside their domestic sorrows and addressing themselves to the duties of the hour. The sympathy shown for this stricken cotiitnnriity is world wide, and relief is jsiuring in from every quarter. The wealthy are giving of their abundance and those more moderately endoaed are onerous in their contributions. In the ni-vrcyste, the snms so far contributed hk large, but it Uiiist be reniemliered tiiat the devastation is absolute. The survivors and there are thousands of them are naked and houseless and al most helpless. There is but a few months betseeuthis and the nipping frosts of Autumn, w ben all these people must be housed or endure additional suffering from the inclemency of the season. The Slate hub undertaken as a sanitary meas ure to clear off the sites w here once stood their homes, but it cannot legally con tribute from its coders to the rebuilding of ttieir habitations or to the support of those so sorely in need of help. Ia?t not the cjuickened pulse of sympathy be :.'.l-d by the thought that much has airvwdy been done. More, much more, is required. These be our brethren, and it is not only the present but their future that nmst be cared for. They must not Is? merely fe I and clothed now, but they must be assisted to become self-sustaining. All are called upon to lend a help ing band. No man that earns a fair day's witgi-s but what can spare something. He knows not when a day of calamity may come for him, or when he may be defiendent upon the humanity of his fel low men. A COLD DAY FOR THE SUFFRAGE AMENDMENT IN SOMERSET COUNTY. The ISth of June his come and at tbia writing is nearly past, and with it the special election for the question of amend ing the Constitution so as to prohibit the manufacture and sale of malt and dis tilled liquors, has been settled by a rote of the people. At the boor of midnight the returns indicate an overwhelming de feat of the Amendment. Philadelphia, with its ninety thousand majority against the Amendment. Allegheny piling some twenty thousand on top of it, and Berks adding ber twenty thousand more, indi cate a majority in the Slate against it of at least one hundred thousand, w ith a strong prolmbility of it being swelled by the remainder of the Slate to one hun dred and thirty thousand. Tartial returns from the county indi cate a majority against the Amendment of from twelve to fifteen hundred. Few elections have been more warmly contested by one side in Somerset Bor ough and Township, than this one. Ear nest and indefatigable work was done by the advocates of the Aniendment in the iKirough from early morning until the hour of closing the polls; while little, if anything was done by those who con scientiously believe that tlie proposed Constitutional Amendment would not abate the evil of intemperance. That some votes were changed by the appeals of the self-styled temperance workers, is probable : but that the over-zealoug ef- I forts of some of the enthusiastic advo cates of the Amendment disgusted many of the thiuking voters, cannot be doubt ed. As to the vote on the Suffrage question, the returns from the State at Urje are too meagre to enable us to form an opt n km at this hour concerning its fate. But in this county the Suffrage Amendment is defeated by at least sixteen hundred majority. Quick Tim and Improved Train Servlc to Atlantic City Over the Pennsylvania Railroad. The outlook for the unimer teason at At lantic City was never to promising as it is at present, and the prueiicrou " City by the Sea" was never in so good a condition for entertaining and amusing il summer guests. Kntertainment ia the sense of affording food and shelter i all that i mjni.-cd of the At lantic Ci?y people. Nature furnishes the rest, and ehe lays sea and land, eky and wind nniler tribute to aid in accomplishing ber ptirose. The great Seaside City of sum mer pleasure, resourceful a it it in all that U attractive and beneficial on sea and land, could never attain to it high standard of popularity if nature' ally, the railroad, did not lend it efficient aid in rendering acces to easy that the average traveler count the trip as nothing. The facilities affonled by the Pennsylvania Railroad teanhore branches will be greatly improved for the coming season. They have always been maintained on a scale of liber ality uriapproached by those enjoyed by any other watering place, but a progrwaive spirit will, this tunnner, be manifested in ninny, and (triking improvement. The Mimmer schedule will go into effect on June -"tn and it will present a service of train superior in uumuer, speed, and equipment to that of ny previous year. Tlie roadway of both the West Jersey and Camden and Atlantic roads have been retwllaated and re'aid in many portion in anticipation of an improved, ac celerated and increased service, so that tlie new schedule will find both of the Pennsyl vania Atlantic City line in prime physical condition. A large number of express train is promised, and the very ipik k time of tran sit heretofore made between the Delaware and the ocean will be materially reduced. . An innovation, which hard-working busi ness men will appreciate and the resident of suburban towns and neighboring cities will find most convenient, is a late evening train from Philadelphia. It:s projiosed that this train shall leave Philadelphia about C:3o P. M., after all the afternoon connection are in and .'Ul business is over, and arrive in Atlantic City for late uppr. It will un doubtedly prove a popular movement, and will oftentimes save much hurry and annoy ance. Another new feauture will be a late train up. leaving Atlantic City at 10 31 P. il. lor Philadelphia, enabling visitors to Sid tlie evening with friend and return the ante night. Other fast trains will run at convenient hours of the day in both direc tion, so that every one may find a leaving and arriving hour to bis taste. Two new train of considerable import ance have been added to the schedule within the past week one an early morning train, designed to deliver the newspapers in Atlan tic City before breakfast, and the other an early train up for the accomin station of those who would be in Philadelphia before nine o'clock. The equipment of the summer trains will be greatly improved by the use of new coacbec and by the substitution of new Al toons built Parlor Curs, such as are run be tween New York and Washington, for the old Woodruff Parlor Cars that the march of progress has left behind. With these sujierior facilities, and the ad vantage offered by a eetitmlly located sta tion easily accessible from all portions of the city, and in direct connection with Broad Street Station, travel to Atlantic City by tlie Pennsylvania Railroad holds out to its patrons tlie strongest inducement of promptness, readiness, and comfort. Work at Willlamsport. William "mar, June 16. Barring imfir sren delay, Williamsport will be connected with the South Side by bridge in ten days. The work of erecting a trestle at Market street will begin to-morrow morning, and in a few day a temporary bridge will be con structed. The contract for the erection of tlie new iron bridge was closed on Friday evening. It was awarded to the Berlin Iron Bridge Company of Cincinnati, who have let the preliminary work to Bowman Jt Lyons, of Mauch Chunk, by whom a large force of men will be employed to-morrow. Steps have been taken to replace the May nan) street bridge at an early day. The cables broke at the opposite side of the river and the bridge held by the cables on this aide floated around and now lieoti tlie north bank of the river. Of course the towers are ruined, but tlie brid) is not a total loss. The company have advertised for bills for replacing tlie structure and as oun as possi ble tlie contract will be let. In the mean time a steamboat plies between tlie city and the South Side above the dam, landing at the Locust street w harf. The first train from the North to come in over the Northern Central Railway was the day e i press, which arrrived at Ii5" yester day. The Niagara express and fast line went North as usual yesterday, and all trains will hereafter run on schedule time. There is plenty of life about the little canvass town in Brandon Park. Cpwards or forty tents have been erected, nearly all of which ore occupied. The occujaints are provided with cot and blankets and ucb other liousehold articles as they may need ; which, in con nection with what they may have saved from their homes, make them quite com fortable. The camp is in charge of Captain Kvan Russell, and is guariled night and day by several members of tlie National Guild Another camp haa been formed al the west ern eod of the city by Sixth wanl persons wbo did not ears to move so far from their former homes. The camp at Brandon Park is visited by many persons in the evenings and the liveliest scenes are to be witnessed there. Child Attacked by a Fox. New Castle. June 15. People of Harlans burg, a village nine miles from here, were treated to a novel sight Thursday last, when a fox which had been chained ill the yard at tbc Russell house, freed himself and started out on a foraging exiwdiiion. He then ran into (be Maiii street of the village where be espied a five-year old child of Merchant Jordon at pUy.
