This list was prepared since the death of Mr. Townsbend (Peniocrat,) of Illinois, to that it shows an aggregate of :',24, lxing one short of tiie full membership. Of this number the Republicans are given lr,4 and the Democrats l-0. Boys in other instances were kept standing for days anil nights without bfing allowed to sit or lie down for a moment, and on one occasion several dropi?d to the floor insen sible and medical assistance was required to resussitate them. Tiie H jusedid not meet until 4 o'clock on Monday, but when it did meet it went to work in earnest, realizing that tiiere was a long calendar of Senate bills to be acted upon, the House bills baring beeu abandon ed. An evening session was held until late hour. On Tuesday the Judge a salary bill was passed, in spite of th most earnest protest of some of the country members, a well as some of the city members from Pitts burgh. Pugh voted and worked against tb bill, but the pressure from Philadelphia politicians wa too strong, and the bid leas ed finally. There is some doubt about its constitutionality, and toe Governor may not sigu it. The bills juussed on Tuesday and Wednesday were of no great Importance. The session on Wednesday night was the must important, from the fact that the House met at 8 o'clock in the evening and remained in session until 8 o'clock Thurs day morning, the hour CxtsI by the joint rules of the Senate and House for bills to be sent to the Governor before final adjourn ment. The Generai Revenue bill was the cause of considerable contention. The Senate, by way of amendment, put a clause in the bill providing for the purcliase of tiie copyright jfsjiuud's Legislative Hand book (or toOUO, and for the purchase of an oil painting of the "Bailie of Lake Erie" for $."X). lioth of these bills failed to pass the House, and the Senate took this method of compelling the House to do thai which it otherwise refused. A conference was apointed, which was in session until about 3 o'clock before they agreed ujion a repor;, which was to strike out the above mentioned items. It was six o'clock before the bill was printed and ready to be voted upon. Then it passed finally and was signet by tbe Speaker and sent to the Governor. It contains the marvelous item of S7..VXJ appropriation for new uni forms for the National Guards. If this item is not stricken out by the Governor, who be gun his vetoing by cutting down ap propriations before the session closed, he will not do his whole duty. At S o'clock on Thursday morning the House took a recess until 11 o'clock, when both Houses convents for tiie last time. Ii.it little remained to be done except com mittees to wait Ujion tbe Governor, and each branch of the legislature rejrted that they haI no further business. The usual presen tation of presents to the Sjieaker and other othcers was gone through with on both sides of the legislature, and at 12 o'clock noon the Sieaker declared the House adjourned iie iZ.', and there was the general larting of old friends, the afternoon train carrying many of the members to their homes. liefore the final adjournment of the Sen ate the Governor sent a number of nomina tions for confirmation to that body, among others was that of Dr. Higlice to be State Hurs rintendetit of Public Instruction. He is the present incumbent and his aprioint ment created considerable surprise and met with considerable opposition. Concerning this appointment the Harrishurg daily Trie yrt)h said that it was not a vindication and denounced Dr. Higbee in the strongest terms and criticized his connection with the sol diers' orphan schools very severely. In view of these facts it is to tie regretted that the Governor could not find a less objectionable educator among tbe many good men in the State-of Pennsylvania. It is yet too soon to seak of the real merit of the work done by the legislature during this session. It will certainly compare very favorably with that of other sissioiis. The city lias quile a deserted hiok to-night not one lAtgislalor renriins to tell how nobly he did his work, but all have gone to their dear constituents. I'mur. Pittsburgh's Creat Music Festival.
