At this point the blood-stained murderer
took tbe stand. Ilia testimony wocupied
over two hour and waa not concluded when
court adjourned ti'l afternoon. Hia story
was a narration of one of tbe most terrible
crimes ever conceived in tbe brain of man
and executed by buman bands. Hia bear

Hia swarthy complexion became pale aa

He managed, however, to aay be took no

"when Beverino and Yillella shot the pay

Mike (letting out a terrible oath), if you do
not hurry and help us wa will kill you.
I then raised my gun and fired tmr or five
shots in the air. Thia ia all I did."
. When confronted with a contraoictory
statement from his written confession to
Captain Linden, he said there were parts of
that confession that he did not make. The
arguments were concluded last night. It is
riably reported that Beverino and Villella
have been captured in Italy and will be
brought here as soon as possible.

"Tbe news comes from Harri-ourj: lhat

There has ten no siju of a lobSy so far tnis

parties with such influence as might be
thought effective. Al! this is very good
news, indeed, and it is much to Is.- desired
that the" same clean character of the sur

This is as it should lie. So long ss a legis
lative body can be kept free from jobs of ev
ery kind, it is on a pretty fair way to do
tome very good work. In f ft it has been
jocosely remarked that one reason for issuing
a science edition of the bird bo-.fc is that
there is no picture of tlie "leiNlstire roos
ter" in the first edition. This, however, is
no reason why there should be a sncond edi
tion. The bill providing tor a second edition
has passed the Senate It provides for Pi.tMO
copies. It has been amended in the House
to lD.Ooo. There is some doubt if it will pa
finally, and more doubt if the biil will be
signed by the tovernor. Lgi.-ialion of this
kind is questionable, and there are good
members who liiink tlie passage of the first
act was a mistake, ami do no, feel like com
mitting tbe same blunder a second time.
On Tuesday the municipal bid passed
third reading about the same as it came from
the committee. It has ;:m: to the Senate

The bill electing assessors for three years

little or no consequence. On Thursday the

authorize counties and niunini-alitie to air

known as tlie "Chicago DrsMtJ Bwfbill.'
Legislation ofthe kind is very doubtful. The
Inter-State rommerce business if ?o free that
to place any restrictions upon it by legisla
tion, is looked upon as an infritim?iit not
warranted by the Constitution. The frit-mis
ofthe measure doubted the conHtitutionality
of the act. Tbe comity of tyate? is so
great that to disturb it by legislation of tbis
kind b to recognize the iH.Tni.-nms doctrine
of State rights, and in tlte end inut prove a
eryrreat injury. The I'i.iialelphia Ve

closes an editorial as follows : ' Wliiie some

proposed leglslalion made a niiMake. It
looked too much like a-i etfort to crowd out
the Chicago btf, and hence incre-c the de

beautiful, the music fine, and many of the

noted for the absence of anything? strotiL-er

It is rumored that there are to be several I

Following tlte gnyety of the reception came
the announcement ofthe fud.-n dou'.Ii of
Senator Taylor, from the city of Thiladel

after a short illness, of pneumonia. Ills
death is regretted by all who know him ;
tbe burial takes place on Sunday, in his na

in a body.
The South Penn has so many aiih, that
