AH roads led to Yoilcr's Thursday, and all the countryside was present at the third annual reuuiou and picaic of Somerset coun ty Lutherans. The grove selected is one of tbe garden spots of Somerset county, and it presented a very attractive picture with front twelve to fifteen hundred people, in holiday attire, loitering neatb its stately oaks and maples. The editor of the Lutheran f'iwtiaer, IT. Conrad, delivered an interesting address on "Chur.-li I-ove," while tlte ldress by Prof. ( . S. Kecdy. of the Hag.Tstown Fe wiaie Setuiunry, oa " Woweu'a Wotk in tiie Lntht-nin Chnrch" prked a great deal on J Mime rather hap-h criticism from among his lady hearers. The learned Professor's views of what ermstituta woman'a'duties and privileges do riot liarniofi ae w ith those held by ladies hereabout, who are able to think for themselves. Ppif. Keedy was fol lowed by several other visiting clergymen, who made short addresses. The grove was entirely deserted at li o'clock.and all return ed to their homes sfter a day's rare enjoy ment. It is a matter of substantial regreJ Prof Veilh, an J of sincere regret oa tbe part of lovers of gtsul music that there was not a larger audience at tbe Opera House Friday evening when the Jobns'.own Octette, assist ed by Miss Sue Morley and Mr. W. H. Ste vens, rendered a well selected program, and in a style far better tlian Somerset people are accustomed to bearing. Miss Morley com pletely captivated her hearers, as she need but open her nioutb When sweet sounds gurgle forth as gently and with as little ef fort as w-aier issues from the mountain brook. If Miss Moriey continues to sing as sweetly and intelligently as she sung " Hush The, My ISahy," the silvery nobs of ber voice will charm thousands in the years lo com. We understand that this accomplished young laiij win sail fir En ro in tlie course of a few weeks, where she will continue her musical studies. (The has a great future or tlie writer doesn't know a good thing when h hears it. Miss Rose Young has a very pleasing high soprano voice and a face every bit a wnanina. Her two numbers were loudly appended and she divided the honors of the evening wku Miss Morley. Mr. W. H. Stevens' tenor oice is peculiarly dear and sympathetic, ewrf his in terpretation of tlie tender little ballad, "If yon were April's lady and I were lord of May," showed tbe true artistic feeling. The program would have been complete with out any "funnv business" and tbe mouldy and melancholy ' Beautiful Isle of the Sea," might have been permitted to pass bv unob served. All in all it was a meat excellent concert and we hope the talented young peo ple will visit Somerset again. Invitations hare been extended to dozens of other prom inent ex-soldiers, many of whom will be here. The indications are, at this time, that Monday. .September Ktb will find more peo ple on the streets of Somerset than were ever gathered there on any previous occa sion. Somerset people like all tbe inhabit ants of tbe county are known far and wide for their hospitality,, and for their unselfish friendship for all old soldier, and very few if any. of the boys who wore tbe blue from this section of the Slat will forgo this op portunity for a day's enjoyment. R- Edie, and Wbebxas, we realize that at no time are we free from tbe direct suaimons of that King of terrors, and that all should be pre pared to meet biro when be comes, Thrrrfurt, Iieirrl, That whilst we recognize tbe supremacy of that will and power which de prives us of a comrade, we none the less feel that in Comrade Edie s death our Post has lost one of its oldest and most respected members. His adherence to the noble prin ples of our cause, his love of country, his manifestations of patriotism under all cir cumstances and his bravery upon many a battle-field during the civil war were traits of character of which his many friends and corar-ailes may justly feel proud. August 11, Iiivt, for the purpose of opening the Presidential campaign.. They raised a beautiful pole, o feet in length without splice, and straight as the deeds don by the Republican party in the past, from the top of which floats a beautiful streamer, bearing the names of Harrison and Morten. After the pole was raised Mr. E. M. Idrnbert was introduced, who delivered an aide ad drew in a very forcible and striking manner. He was greeted with frequent and hearty applause throughout his address. The Walk er brass band furnished som very select music for the occasion. We believe that the Republicans of this section are the most act ive and enthusiastic in Somerset county, for raising the first pole from which waves the stars and stripes, and the Republican banner of thiscampiign. If there are any Republicans iu the county who have raised a Harrison and Morton pole previous to that of Dow ney, we wish to hear from them. It is not expected that any district will make sweeping changes iu text-books at once, but it is earnestly recommended that they be made iu accordance with tbe forego ing recommendations aud that the adoptions be mode as the circumstances and needs of tlie several districts may require. County uniformity which is so much de sired can be secured in a very few years, but only by the united aud harmonious action ef all tbe boards of tbe county. Not only are marterial advantages secured for intro ducing new books, but it will also be clearly evident by a comparison of tbe prices herein guaranteed with those now paid for school books in tbe county, that there will be an actual saving oi from 20 to 3o per cent, to those who buy tlie books.
