If report- be true some of tbe scenes on the groumbi of the lilair County Agricultural Ss-iety at Hollidaysburg on Friday after msin last were dechledly disirrai-eful. It is a very difficult thing for an agricultural sis iety to go go into the racing business and keep its hands t han. Where there is racing there is betting, and where there is betting there is apt to be cheating or chaiys of cheating, and in any event tliereis bound to be rnu ble. We suppose there is such a thing as fair and honest racing, but it seems to be the exception. The beA plan for an agri cultural six-iety to adopt is to leave pnifes rional gamblers and Jockeys severely alone. Altoona Tribune. More Railroads In Westmoreland. It is also likely that the Baltimore and Ohio, and the Pittsburgh, McKeespiSrt and Youghiogheny will in a short time extend one of their lines from the Mt- IHcastuit distriol into the neigh Uirhisul of the H'te1ter ovens. The breaking up of the camp waa as simple as it was wonderful. The herd of elephants, dromedaries and camels waa marched directly from tba ring to the ferry which was to take them to the cars at Mor- rUania. The chariots and baggage wagons rumbled after them the moment tbey were no longer needed. The raged animals fol lowed in a very short time, and before the audience bail left the big tent the seats were being taken down, stakes were pulled np and tbe last remnants of the camp were on tbe verge of demolition. Long before mid night tbe large open field on which the camp had been pitched was deserted and the Barnuni train of cars, a mile in length, was freighted and ready fur home. This Conference was held at Pine Hill. Somerset County, Pa.. October STith, 2ith and 27th. From the various charges of Conference there were present fifteen minis ters and nine lay delegates. Sermons were preached by tlie following ministers : Revs. M. L.Young. J. P. Schnure, J. F. Shearer, K, A. Fink, D. P.. and E. L. Folk. The sub jects of these sermons were respectively Confession of Sin," "Holiness," "Sins of Omission," Piviue Love of Beneficence." and "Remembrance Of and Love For the 'hurch." Essays were rein I by Revs. J. H. Zinn and E. Manges on " The Puty of Family Wor- bip"; by Revs. Stouffer and Welch ou Benefits of Infant Baptism": bv Revs. Len-h and Sell on ' Our Puty to the Tem perance Cause"; by Rev. J. F. Shearer on "The Mission of the ''hurch"; by Rev. J. H. Houseman on " Ohlhratiotis of the Church." These subjects were also further discussed by different ministers. Considera ble business was also transacted. The fol lywing were tlie most important resolu tions : A resolution recommending the envelope system for benevolence. A resolution requiring every minister to preach to each of his congregations once a year one sermon on tlie government and dis cipline of the church. The temiierauce reso lutions are as follows ; 1st. That the present status of the temper ance reform demands ever increased watch- i fulness and work on the part of all lovers of the highest and best interests of the nation. 2nd. That any and every protsr lawful and Christian means mcst be used to sup press the destructive and impove ishing drink traffic. 3rd. That the alarming increase in the use of alcoholic liquors as a drink admonishes' us that tlie time has now come when the chun h must take an aggressive and une quivocal stand on tins, the most important j of all questions pertaining to the welfare of 1 tlie nation and the perpetuity of our free Christian institutions. 4th. That the signing of petitions for the sale of liquors and becoming bondsmen ft -r those engaged in the business by church members is absolutely contrary to the W nl and Spirit of the ttnsspel, and any members of our churches, who do these things afe having been instructed in regard to their duty make themselves liable to censure and disci pline, aud if they persist to expulsion from j tbe church. dth. That tlie destruction of the liquor traffic will never be accomplished until Christian voters unite thems. Ives into one I agjrreivstve, pure, honest, non-trading, non j compromising party that with straightfor- wanL iersistent work will gain and hold ! power, ent m-edful laws, and enforce the same. 6th. That we denounce high license as in our opinion inadequate, delusive and inef ficient, and always increases but never di minishes the consumption of liquor, ami does not diminish the number of patrons of the saloons, nor the evils growing out of such patronave. 7th. That National Prohibition is the final and only solution of the temperance ques- i tion in our land. The sermons of Conference were able and spiritual, the essays showed thought ami caie In pretration, and both were much ap preciated by the people as was shown by very good attendance, attention, and often ex pressed appreciation, as well as by kind, roy al hcatpitaiity. The Conferenc e was instruct ive, profitable, delightful. Secbetaey. Waenington Letter, from Our Regular Correspomlrat. Wshi!Ci.to!. I. COrt. 23, l-7. On Monday. IreBahvf Sth, just six weeks from yesterday, ihe Stinker's gavel will make its annual salutatory krus k upon tlie marble deak in the Hall nf the Lower House of tlie National Legislature, and announce the feet tliai curam-ss is once more with us. This coming event at the Capital is heralded by tlie changed aspect of tbe city, and by the many old and familiar faces and forms one :s apt now to meet in a stroll about the po- j litical and atsriai centers of Washington. Tbe capital city is already in a glow that will very soon merge into a white beat and shine with dazzling brilliancy during the coming important political and social season, frr this season will he the season of IsSao Politics ami society may be said to be tiie very heart of Washington lite. They (rm the magnet that attracts the host of winter restcienta. and the power of this magnet in e reases every year. Iu attraction is felt not only in remote corners of this country, hot sometimes in Europe. It calls tbe truant senator, politician, and Mrs. and Mian Vanity Fair back from their aoaomersjijourn abmaL It is ita influence, ia connection with tbe chilly forewarning of hoary Winter, that lores the society belle iron ber salt water or rustic retnsjt back to the enjoy ntei it of Terr k bore and the social mav at toe Capital. It ia this influene that thrill- th cornrr- man aUvit tht- time, and ksst- him captive into Washington with hiabtsly-uard of rela tives and cialstiiuenta. It is the tame indu enee that draws ir.io tlie Nat: ooal household tl-e ignoi4r army of iobbyisis. arid a buiisrry train of bipeds lonkiiig tar " something to turn np. It is, m fact, this stnuure power and (ascinaticin. born of a combiiKiihst of politH-w and seriocrsrwsss, society ami f.tioiity. that aernres the varied personnel of tlie Na tional Capital. In sections and squads they come now, but in a week or so tiie great bust will sudden ty come down upon as, flut ter for awhile, and then settle for tba season. For this Influx, Washington has prefared duringbersum mer respite. Site has don ned new attire and is ready to courtesy on tbe ar rival of her congressional aud winter guests. Indoors and out the city has been swept and garnished, miles of new street have been smoothly -paved witlr asphaii, and bright new parks bars been opened and atetamor- pUassd into verdant splendor. Every day has marked a further filling in of the P'o- mac fiats. iim ajleged soanw f con gressional malaria" sod the ultimate plan of this improvement contemplates a mid- river park south of the city that will rival the famous Soldiers' Home drive at the Northern end. The new Pension Building lias been completed, and tlie finished Wash ington Monument will soon be naciy for tlie ascent of tiie general public. A walk about the city will surprise the summer absentee. Real estate improve ments crowd the eye on all sides. Capitol Hill and South Washington have seeti a great change in this respect, bat it is in tbe West End the fashionable quaiter of the city that tbe improvements for this season are most marked, tonne ticut Avenue ex tends through the heart of this fashionable section of the city and ranks next to Penn sylvania Avenue in social prominence and as a favorite promenade. This magnificent street extends from the resilience of the emi nent philanthropist. Mr. W. W. Corcoran, to horn the country is indebted for the estab lishment of the noted. Corcoran Art Gallery and many other donations of national im portance, to the well known Castle Stewart, or "Stewart's Folly " as it is sometimes call ed. Centrally on this Avenue are hxrated the buildings of tlie British Legation, and many other eountnes bare their representative housed on it in what is called Diplomatic Row. Connecticut Avenue is to Washing"! ton what Fifth Avenue is to New York, or the Boulevard Haussiuann is to Paris, it presents now almost an unbroken stretch of American palace-, and vies in architectum! beauty of design and finish with almost any st met in the world. Similarity is found in Commonwealth Avenue at the " Americ-an Athens" but there is then noted a lack of the pleasing relief that the eye finds on Con necticut Avenue in the intervals of green parks and bright flower beds. Washington is happy in another improve ment. The howl of the otficeseeker is prac tically inaudible. This strange, hos-ful va riety of the genu htmo we have always with u. He diass not migrate with tiie rest of Washingtniiian for a summer holiday, but plies his vocation even during the Iongsieta which the city enjoys in th interval between the sessions of Congress. He formerly mude life unendurable to the President and beaiLs of departments. No amount of vigilance formerly thwarted his bold designs. But he is at last conquered by tbe liorrors of a rigid comja'titive examination, and he shrinks from the frowns of the Civil Service meas ures. The majority uf this recent formida ble army are awed into complete silem-e. but the most daring still loiter around and feebly howl their presence. MARRIED. FAITH SWEITZER.
