The IKsciple congregation their church edifice by the is improving addition of a rupaki and a new hell. Onr frtreet Commissioner, of course means it all right, but w hy he doe not permit cer- tain families, living a long distance from public crossings, to have small prive cross ings, while others living much nearer pub lic crossings, are permitted lo enjoy huge asli piles clear acres tbe street, no one j know. The public crossing in front of tbe Lutheran church is almost intolerafie. and can t well be endured by those w ho have oc casion to travel up and down Hien street. The question is frequently asked what ef fect "no license" has upon the tnoral and business of the town. Tiie answers getiend lv made differ very much. Some aay that the improvement i so clearly marked tiiat it can be seen everywhere and at all times. Others say tliat there is no improvement at ail in morals and that busiuess has been in jured. If any one should answer tbe ques tion correc-tly it would not satisfy either side, line tiling worthy of mention, however, is that our town never was much of an intem-jK-rale town, and is no! se at the present. Strangers that hare had occasion to remain here for a few weeks almost invariably com plimented tiie town for it sobriety and gcssl order. Tbe ootisunijrtion of whiskey has not been materially arrested, however, by "no license ;" Yet few persons can be seen on our streets rrreptibly under tbe influence of liquor. There are perhaps, less persons lodging here than when whiskey was sold at the bar. I notice that a large portion of traveling men try to get into an adjoining county to remain over night. If tliere were "no license" in the adjoining counties, it would benefit us less here. Let all temper ance men vote tbe Republican tkket. and a prohibitory amendment will I submitted to a vote of the people in due time. The Iie roocracy is for whiskey, and plenty of it. Oct. 7, ls7. Mr. John Brant, of 111, finucr!y of Mer lin, this county , was visiting relations io this vicinitv last week. Mr. Brant has been liv- ing in the Western country fir twenty years, this being his first visit to his former home. Rev. Barlett preached an interesting ser mon here on Sunday. The subject being : f nuking many books there is do end. The speaker became quite eloquent, holding his sudiew-e spell bound. He Referred cleat ly to tbe evil and iiufmrtaiKT of literature. Mr. Harvey L. Young, who had charge of our school for the lam four years, was recent ly elected teacher of tbe Walker school by the board of director. Mr. Young is a very competent and efficient teacher and his labor in our school was highly gratifying. Some changes have been made in the school hooks this year among them in Apple tons Geography which is a complete work.. The tjuesUoti whether we should have new books in oar common schools every year is quite frequently discussed by our citiaeus. While this is a question which we shall not endeavor to discuss but only believe that a change of books in our school should take plate for the benefit of the school as well as to adopt new methods that will elevate a moire fine and nobler sphere of activity in our schools.
