The department of the Secretary ami Superintendent ofgroumls was found l be in line o.iiditiou, and Mr. W. A. iMiucuu is deserving of apucial ctwiil. The sanitary condition could nut be better: the water supply is ample and of g.sl quali fy ; aceesa to the mineral wells, springs and fuiintaiim is easy, and free to all ; the nn sighliinesa of the burnt district has disa; peared ; tbe rL-tiovalci Hotel AtLclueuiu was open on time, and under good management ; the new I'niversity building i ready for oc cupancy ; the t reets tiai driveway are in complete rejiair, anil in every respect Chau tauoua presents to tiie public its usual at tractions. The oicnii!g exennse have lieen all that could be desired. Rev. Mark tiuy Horce, of England, by his lectures, sermons and Bible realiiigs, has given great satisfaction. We see in him a spieutlid Welch man, a discend ant of the ancient and nnconqueralile Celta of Britain, and s noble specimen of humani ty he is ; great and learned in mind, but still greater in heart. The lectures of Rev. J. M. Buckley, I). D, on uiemport preaching, preparations for tiie pulpit, and kindred top ics, have been characterized by all the abili ty, versatility and wide range of thought cliaracterislic of that remarkable man. The Fourth of July was celebrated at Chautau qua in away worthy of the occaaiou. We hail fire crackers, but they were not in the ascendant : morning and afternoon able ad dresses were delivered, in which the highest interests of our country, present and future, w ere discussed. pp.C Ellis, from Brooklyn, N. Y., has or ganized a large chorus choir, which will serve as the nucleus of ihe music at Chautau qua this year. He will also himself give spc-ial amietion to voice culture and siugiiig His courteous ways as a gentleman every where and to ail people, as well as his great ability, make him a favorite with all classes. II is popularity has been constantly on the up grade since his first year at Chautauqua. As we look over the program it apjiears that a feast of rich things is in store for the crow.ls w hich will gather at this place dur ing this month and August. The geniuses of the platform are Sam Jones and John Dewitt Miller. Mr. Miller's mind is a vast reservoir of kiiowleilge, and in almost everything he can see something lieatitiful. which nobisiy else can see 'till it Hashes forth out of his mind. After listening an hour or so to one of his lecture you are well pleased; at the rloeeof the second hour you are a little troublisi through tear that the lecture may close S.K111 : and sometime in the third hour when the lecture finally closes, you are glad of it, for you are weary of thinking and see ing new and beautiful things. The part w hich philosophy has played iu the a) fairs of the world during the past five hundred years, will be discussed by Principal Fair Imirn, of England, and Pn.f. Noah K. Davis of the University of Virginia, may tell us something of his own, new ami original, on this subject. The mist binary institute will bring to Chautauqua a few returned mission aries, and the most able and aealoiis work ers in that cause at home. Much valuable information from all parts of the world will be brought together. Will Carlton, a humor ous genius of the higher rustic and domestic order, will lie present to amuse and instruct tiie people by readings which he calls " The Chair of Success." and -Character ykctches in Vfwv and Verse." tine of th peculiar attractions of Chautau qua, Ibis year, will be tbe pcriiitelic class, or walkers, under the direction of Miss Mary ii. i tennis of Kentucky. Ihiily rambles will lie made on the grounds and outside its lim its, in search of natures, secrets, hves, plants, Howers, stones, worms, butterflies, bugs, and everything w hich is a part of na ture iiecomes a subjei-t of study. Miss iH-n-liis. in herdeiirtnient. was a complete suc cess last. year. When a wnanlchucfc is to be dug out of its den, one ortwo stalwart young men are allowed, with pick and shovel, to acconiiany the class. Physii-.il culture, adapted to both sexes, will hold a conspicuous place in this Assem bly. W. t. Anderson, of Bnaiklyn, X. Y., will have charge of this deiwrfment. Here will be presented for boys and girls, and for young lailies and gentlemen, opportunities for physical culture, comprising every exer cise that tan be desired. The season has 0s-nel most suspiciously, and there is no reason why the present should not be oik- of tbe best and greatest of tbe Chautauqua As semblies. H. "Citizen" Asks a Question. En. As I .late this tl recjieetion ooi-urs to my mind of an alleged letter published in a newrspaiier when I was a hoy, from an Irish emigrant to his mother. It was 'lated Cork. Sew York. Angus! the same, eighteen hun dred and February. That sounds ridi. ulous I know, but tle're have been sights and sounds tar more so to as since we landed on the Emerald Isle, which if not ridiimloas in a broad sense, are truly Korkonian. a dis tinction possibly without a difference, view ed Horn our stan.lisiiiil. We have niy been ashore twenty-lour hours, too brief a time you will say to form a correct judgment of character and things, but tbe mind of the American tourist you must know isnmuiv erous with a S.rfy-horse-power dii?estive ap paritns in mnstant nM.ti.rn. Our opinion is always maiie np from comparisons when practicable. Of course we expert to se things in the old world of which there ran be neither an original or even a duplicate in America, nothing however, but what has been described time and again by abler pens than mine. I shall emleavor, at least to he truthful, sud not let tiie glamour inci.ieut to eastern travel, influence or lend a coloring to my statements. I have been requested by many friemls to describe my ocean voyage in detail, and per haps such an undertaking might be reada ble. I think it belter to generalize on this subject, merely giving one who has never set sail on any of the large ocean steamships that now traverse the seas, a general idea of my personal experience as s passenger ; ac companied by my wife and son, on the Cu nanl steamship " Umbria," which sailed from New York on Saturday, May 14th, with jnn saloon passengers oil boanL and on the following Saturday at 2 o'clock in the morning we descended from the palatial " l iubria" to a nameless tug that would dis grace Canadian harbor, worse yet say a South African inlet, and thmugh a driving rain, cold and chtssrless, we struck a foreign shore for the first time just as day fairly broke. There were some sixty of ns that left the " l'mbrir"and stood the pelting of the storm underneath our umbrellas, cabin less and tireless in the gray dawn in the inter vening distance of four miles from the an chorage of the " I'mbria" to the landing at Oueenstown. Nearly, if not quite all were Americans. I infer this from the fact that if it ha.1 been " Britishers " landing in Amer ica their curses would have been loud and deep at such lack of- accommodation. As they appeared to be Americans, they stood and took it without a perceptible murmur. Now you can believe that or not, just as you ch.Hise. I won't vouch; for its veracity. Well, we landed at yueenstown, a city of say lo i.MI inhabitants, built on tbe side of a high range of hills that slope down into the bay of Cork. Of course we pushed our way like a Lit of cattle over the gang plank, into the custom hna.se, and went through the f. irm of liaving our baggage examined. I chanc ed to have a French dictionary in my valise which the officer viewed si.leways, length ways and npsi.le down, finally gave it np as a ba.1 job, and remarked that he would let it pass this time. A fellow tourist with two boxes of cigars for his own use," was not so fortunate ; having traveled before, he es- caed confiscation in a way peculiar to the officer, who, of course, like Poohbah, pocket ed the " insult.'' Having planted my feet once more on term jinmi, and thus anticiaited the terminus of the ocean passage in this recital. I will now go back and attempt a brief resume of the voyage. We had on the whole, a cam 6 irtable passage. For nbotit three days we sailed on "summer seas," then the winds shifted, bringing fog for a brief spell, follow ed by a sea that ran high, and rocked oar immense enft till it was veritably a " cradle of-the deep." Fortunately for us. we had fullv gotten our sea legs before the rough weaterset in, and I am proud to say, es.upe.1 the discomforts of .sea sickness. The "I'm bria ' as a safe, speedy and comfortubleboat, stands in high favor with sea going people. She is .VSO feet king, of proportionate breadth and depth, of eight thousand tons burden, and sailing capacity of '.1 miles an hour. Her officers and crew number about 27") men. About everything that human ingenuity can conceive for the comfort and convenience of travellers seems to have been provided in the equipment of this vessel. The uphol stering and general finish of the inside will compare favorably with the Pullman sleep ing, palace and dining ear. Each state room has an electric bell and incan.lecent electric light. You can have meals and liquid re-fn-shiuets served in your rooius without additional charge, and children in arms can eat at first table. The steamer chair was a revelation to me. Each paswenger purchases one before embarking. At the end of tbe voyage it is stored with the company until the return trip. These chairs are used ex clusively on the upper dis k and in tine weather when the sea is smooth as glass, and the temperature up in the seventies, I know of no greater luxury on earth or on water, fir the matter of tliat, than to recline on one of these chairs and rocked by the gentle mo tion of the boat, lulled into half forgeufiil ness by the swish, swish, of the waters through which it cleaves a passage you feel " just bK go.! for anything." Bye and bye the gong sounds for luncheon ; if you feel disclined to stir you don't have to ; at your summons a steward will wait on you. For tbe first course you can be served with soup, second cold fowl sandwitches and pi.-klui. thiol oranges, figs an.f ginger nuts. This is served at 12 o'clock and at 5 p. x. dinner. Of course in so large a cabin passenger list numbering over over 3K, it might be expec tcsl that some persons of notoriety would he found. It appears that we liave no excur sions uboard whatever. There were manny iersons of wealth and retinment, one of ex-President Garfield's sons a I'nited States senator and the queen of song, the divine Palti. The crowd that stiKsl on tbe wharf at New York to say gmal bye to the Fmbria nuinliered over 2,f eo ple. It was a grand sight to look down into theirtearftil fais from the deck of our steam er, and when far out into the bay. some snd heart still lingered on the shore doubtless re mained there until the " I'mbria " was but a speck upon tiie horizon. They were but few incidents on board ship worthy of notii-e The priuciial occupation of the majority was lying on deck swathed in overcoats and blankets. There was only one day when this privilege was denied us, Sir with the deck at an angle of i" or 4n degrees only the moet venturesome were ambitious enough to risk the consequences. I was fortunate enough to get sight of two whales distant about half a mile. They rose to the surface at intervals, each time spouting volume of spray that resembled more than anything else the smoke arising from a discharge.! musket. They were small ones, and as t bad not lost any whales re cently 1 allowed them to go on in their mad can-er. On Sunday divine service was held in the grand sulaon. The sailors oil duty occupied the front seat, each with a book. The ser vice was conducted by tbe cataiu au-onling to the usual Episcopal form. tme evening there was a concert; but matters of this kind isx-ur I believe on every passage and I will omit recounting them here.
