The ;.:iorant youth, wuo had never so mush as heard of nouns anil verbs, or "fed on the dainties wau ii are bred in a book," was a child of destiny ; for it was he who in after life b-came the far lamed Grammar King. The literature of a farui-house in those days seldom consisted of more than a bible and hymn-book, a prayer-book and the almanac. The bible was then real with more diligence probably than at present. The almanac was constantly referre 1 to for the changes of tbe moon and the weather, and tbe moon for the proper seasons for the various operations of the farm and house hold economy. Coming events were care fully traced by the aid of numerous s;:ms and tokens, and the study of lucky and un lucky days was by no means neglected. Moreover, the folk-lore was lanrelv made np of witch andghost stories imported from the banks of the Rhine, and the old Pennsylva nia homes, wild, but fascinating and enjoy able withal, especially when cracked with nuts, or munched with apples and cider bad enjoyed it so much; in less than an hour after he left the church he received the deathblow. Mr. Lohr was a member of the church of tbe United Brethren in Christ for some time, but like some others he had at one time became somewhat remiss in his re ligious duties, but ince the death of his children several years rgo, be became quite a changed man, and was faithful in his at tendance upon the public means of grace. He was especially a warm friend of the Sabbath-school, never absent from it when he could help it. For the last nine months of his life he read the Bibleand Sabbath-school literature almost constantly when he bad any leisure time, and was preparing bim- scbool next summer.
