There was an unusual large number of people from the country in town on Saturday. The first regular snow storm of the season put in an appearance in this section last Friday. Messrs. William and Franklin Rodgers, of Shade township, were among our busi ness callers Friday. Kditor Coffroth, of the Ikmocmt, returned Thursday from a two weeks' sojourn in Maryland and Virginia. II. S. Endsley, Esq , who ba been con fined to bis bed for the past two weeks by serious illness, is slowly convalescing. The weather was so eitremely disagreea ble Sunday, that many of our fair-weather Christians remained home from church. Mrs. John II. lijvts, who was visiting rel atives in Somerset for the past two weeks, returned to her home in Irwin Monday moruiug. ' The members of the Somerset Silver Cor net Band will please consider our bat off in honor of the charming serenade tendered us Saturday evening. Our staunch Republican friend, John Hammer, Yj of lloovernville. paid us a friendly call FriiUy afternoon. He was strongly for iuay and the county ticket. Hallow K en was observed by the Somer set small boy in the accustomed manner Sat urday evening. The usual amount of bell ringing, corn throwing, etc. was indulged in. F. J. Kooser, and daughter, returned last week from a visit to relative and friends in Columbus, Cincinnati, au 1 Urbana, Ohio. Mrs. Kooser remained for a more protracted visit. Mr. J. Iuibrie Miller, Chief Kngineer of South Pennsylvania Railroad in this county presented each of the ministers of the bor ough with a fifty dollar bill before taking uis departure, The Misses Joe and Alice Elder, daughters of Col. Samuel Elder of Ligonier, and Miss Barbaia Meyers, of Meyersdale, spent last week in Somerset at the residence of Mr. Edward Scull. Constable Ed Maurer, of Jetiner township. arrived in town Monday morning with John Thomas, of tue same township in his custo dy, and lodged him in jail to await trial at court, on a charge of adultery. Mr. William II. Piatt brings to Somerset the choicest oysters that the eastern market affords. His saloon in the basement of the Cook it Beerits block is neatly and comfort ably fitted np and is a good place to visit wben you are hungry. The South Penn engineers of Lutz's divis ion, held a public vendue in the Pliamond. Saturday morning, for the purpose of dispos ing of the plunder they had collected during their four year's stay in Somerset. Good prices and lots of fun were realized. Monday night was a regular old-timer The snow came down like a blanket, and covered the ground to a dentli of several inches. Mr. A. i. Hileman, Cleric to the County Commissioners, informs us that be last week received all the necessary blanks to complete the assessment under the new revenue act. The blanks art numbered by the thousands. This Is a level-headed subscriber that an exchange tells about: Calling the other day to renew bis subscription, he remarked that be found it much cheaper to pay for bis pa per in advance than at the end of the year. When lie paid in advance he felt that he was getting something every week for his money ; but to square up at the end or the year was Ukc paying for worn out clothes- there was none of the pleasure of anticipa tion in the transaction. Were we oblig ed to select one oublication for habitual and careful reading to the exclusion of all oth ers, we choose unhesitatingly the Indeprtul ml. It is a newspaper, magazine, and re view, ail in one. It is a religious, a literary. an educational, a story, an art. a scieiiniic. an agricultural, a financial, and a political newspaper combined. It has 32 folio pages and 22 departments. No matter what a person a religion, politics or profession may be, the Independent will prove a help, an in structor, an educator. Our readers can do no less than to send a jiostal for a free speci men copy, or for thirty cents the paper will be sent a month, euabling one to judge of its merits more critically. Its yearly sub scription is $3 01, or two years for $3.00. Address. The IsDEPEnnE.-rr, 251 Broad way, New York City. Tbe new Reformed church at Eyeret. will be dedicated on Sunday, November 8th. Why should we buy our Clothing, Hats, Caps and Gents Furnishing Goods at Becher's Clothing Hall ? is a question that is being asked ev ery day. - But the answer iseasily and plain ly told. The first reason is, that it is the only place in Somerset, where you can find an exclusive stock of clothing and Gent's Furnishing goods. Secondly, There is not any article jiertain ing to a first class Clothing establishment that can not be found at Becher's Clothing Hall. Thirdly, You will find the largest and handsomest BtocE of Suits and Overcoats for Men's, Youths' Boys' and Children's wear, that lias ever been seen in Somerset. Fourthlv. Becher is an experienced Cloth ier, and he does not sell yon old stock tor new. Wben he has an article in his store that does not sell as readily as it should be I educes the urice to such a low figure that a cuitomer cannot help but buy. Fifthly, Becher ays cash for bis goods, and thereby saves a heavy discount, which be proposes to eive to his customers. Sixthly, All goods are guaranteed as rep resented or money refunded. Tbe public is respectfully invited to call Iu its issue of October MU the Meyersdiile Commerrutl, in shaking of the costs in tlie Poor House and Auditors' cases, says: " Well, we will have to let the old man of the IIukald lie ab.Kit the costs till the elec tion, it is his last hobi. The truth of tli matter is, the emu have already been pabl in crerv row into the ball' Is of their attorney." ' , That the editor of the Com mercial is a very ignonnt man, all who know him are aware. That he will lie like a Trojan, no one doubts. But that he would try to inipooa upou the credulity of hi need was a friend iudeed." Every friend of the .gentleman alluded to knows tbe cir cumstances ; he has never hesitated to tell them. He had but "- friends ; they were enough ; it is an otter impossibility that either of these could have penned "Keen Thoughts," in the Ibmmtrcinl, because all are (iextlkme the supposed Plumbago doesn't associate with any other kind of men, and all of them know that when a friend casts into the teeth of bis friend the act which established his friendship, be has given a receipt in full with the balance perhaps in the debtor's favor. A casting np of so-called (and supposed) friendly acts done toward another, is not tbe evidence of pressing need of railing the attention of our peo ple to the proper oboerranco of the day and urge them to dUK.oanlentnre Saoday newspapers.
