According to public notice given, a large number of people from Turkey foot and surrounding townships assembled at Tassel- man on the 10th of September, and held a basket picnic . The Sunday schools partic ipating with the scnool here were the Mount Union, Markleton and Laurel schools, with great numbers of children and other troin Kisgwood, New Lexington, Rock wood and other tilaces, who joined in the festivities of the occasion. The large assembly of sev eral hundred people was called to order at 10 o'clock a. M.. when David McDevitt, Esq. was chosen President, and William Sufall, Esq., Vice President of the day, and Messrs. Simon and Levi . Weimer as Secretaries. Thus organized, Mr. Sufall stated that the object pf the day was the celebration of our harvest home, the successful progress of our Sunday schools, and the memory of our great naval victory under Commodore Per ry on Lake Erie ; to which was added, by President McDevitt, the general peace, pros perity and happiness of the people. The programme for the day was then read by Secretary Levi Walker, followed by music from the choir and prayer by Rev. rershing, ( who took the stand immediately thereafter and delivered a most excellent address to the people and the schools. This fine speech was spoken for the benefit of the children, but all present seemed to appreci ate and enjoy it. - The hour of noon having arrived, the au dience was dismissed until 2 r. ., and now the glad part of the day had commenced Tnder nearly every shade tree in the grove was a spread, and a wilderness of good and tempting edibles were before us. Cyrus Cort : "America has just followed to the tomb her most distinguished citizen. A nation mourns tbe death of General Vlysses Simp son Grant, twice elected President, and for along time chief commander of the army which suppressed tbe most gigantic rebellion kaown to history. At this time eveythiiig pertaining to the bistorv of the illustrious soldier b read with avidiiy and often with out discrimination. Much has been writ ten merely to secure notoriety for the author rather than to honor aright the dead or viudicate the truth of history. The writer lately came across some facts in regard to tbe ancestral relation of General Grant which he deems worthy of publica tion and which will at least prove interest ing to many ministers and members of the Reformed Church who are well acquainted with the venerable father from whom we receive our iufurmation-. In our jaunt through the mountain from Franklin to Westmoreland county during our August vacation we spent a night at the hospitable home of elder Abraui Beaui.Hlear Si pesv ilia Somerset county. Pa. Although in his eighty-eighth year, father, or "grand pap" Beam, as he is familiarly called, ia still quite active both in body and mind. With difficulty we preveutud hint from climbing a rustic ladder to throw il o hay for our burse. He seemed rejoiced to renew tbe ac quaintance of twenty odd years ago when il was his pleasure to help the wr.ter with lib eral gifts in behalf of Altoona mission church. In the course of the evening talk the recent funeral of General Grant was re ferred to when the good old far.ner some what startled ns by remarking that bis firt wife, Elisabeth Sinirou, was a full cousin of Hannah Simpnon, the mother of General t. ft. Grant. As this worthy lady was a de voted member of t!:e Rrfirnied Church be fore she married fa'her Beam and was in strumental in getting him to identify him self with our Reformed communion whence great and blessed results have accrued to our beloved Zion, we feit constrained fur her sake, as well as fur the sake of her relation ship to the distinguished general, to give greater publicity to the facts as narrated to us by father Beam. The onjpnal or cuiusioo ancestor of the Simpson family was a soldier in the Revolu tion. He was captured by tbe British it nd he 1 ing the coming of the Lord, amid the scenes of bis childhood, made doubly aacred by the memory of the sainted companion who long since entered the rest that reniaineth to the people of God. The Grants can feel proud of thair Somerset county kinsman and of their Keystone Frenndscbaft in general. now perhaps for the first time brought to their attention." DIED. 8TCLL. On Friday. Kiernan, who for the past two years bas been orenpyine; tbe position of sargeon on board the TaciGc mail and passenger ship "City of Tokio" between San Francisco and Yckohania, Japan, ar rived in Somerset Wednesday, where he will remain for a short time. The doctor has crossed and re-crossed the Pacific thirteen' time and has had quite a marvelous expe rience since he left Somerset. lie was on board the Tokio when it went down some few months since. but little good ha been accomplished. The fault is sot with tbe taxpayers, but with tbe directors themselves, and no one else. Nine tenths of those who pay the taxes are not only wining, bat desirows, of paying a sala ry such as would jnstify an experienced and qualified teacher for at least the first and second rooms. This could be due without increasing the taxes more than one mill, if other things were properly conducted. There is no little dissatisfaction among the people here at the pretended false economy of a few of our directors. Talk to them about $10 per month for the first room, and they are instantly seized with labor-pains and act as god-father for each other, hoping some day to be able to christen the project " economy." It must be said, however, that this is not the condition of all of our directors. There are a few who desire to do justice to the schools, and also to the tax payers, but they are yet in the minority and will have to I until after next spring elec tion, when il is confidently hoped that there will be but one of the objectors left, as three are to be chosen at that time. Those who have so much to say about tbe poverty of the taxpayers, are seldom sincere in what they say. Name tbe man. in Con fluence, who is not willing to pay a tax suf ficient to maintain a good school, 'outside of some of the directors themselves ! It is al. way cheaper to support a good school than a poor one. ' Last winter an effort was made to adopt Rauh's series :-f readers in place of Apple ton's.
