It is s curious fact that one of the most fs moos poems in our language appeared orig inally in a magazine that seldom touches poetry at all, and the same periodical, after an interval of Go years, now brings out an other poem very similar in theme. Bryant's Thanatopsia" was first printed in the Sorfi Renew for September, 1817. The May number of the Review, just oat, has a poem by Robert Buchanan on "The ew Buddha." The critics found fault with M r. Bryant's peem on the ground that it was un-Christian ; it remains to be seen what they will say of Mr. Buchanan's. The ques tion, ''Has Christianity Benefitted Woman?" is ably discussed ia this another by Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Bishop J. L. Spalding. President J. L. Pickard writes on Why Crime is Increasing.'' and David Dudley Field on " Industrial Co-operation," while Prof. Andrew F. Prompt action is of vital importance, and there is no occasion for waiting the arrival of an old fashioned or new fashioned practiuner when so simple a remedy may be applied by any one. and if taken in season will, I think, al ways be effective. In my first personal ex perience my deteimination not to give np business, even a day, came near cost ing me ray life. The case was neglected till an eminent Boston physician said that my right lung would be of just so much use to me out on the table ss in the condition it then was. s, fact of which I was pretty well aware, but the mustard and flaxseed poul tice mastered the disease snd restored my lung to its normal condition, ss good ss new. X April 17th. 1X8.V Asotheb Jail Dkuvbbt. It is the same old story. Two more pris oners made their escape from the county jail Thursday night through the same old hole in the wail, which has not been closed up since Miller punched it open some ten aays since and remains open even onto this day. When Miller was rearrested after bis first escape, the sheriff placed hobbles on his legs, snd under instructions from the com missioners locked the door lesdiug into the cell from which he and so many others bare made their exit. For some unaccountable reason the Commissioners neglected to have the wall repaired, ot perhaps they thought it useless. Thursday night Miller and an Ir ishman who was awaiting trial on s charge of carrying concealed weapons, could no longer resist the tempting offer and knock- ng the lock off of the cell door tbey made a rope of their bed clothing and noiselessly slid to the ground. Neither of them have since been heard of. There were several other prisoners in the jail at the time who did not care to leave in that way. Although this jail has been condemned by grand jury after grand jury, composed of tax-payers, good citizens, intelligent men the authorities bare seen fit to ignore their representatives and recommendations snd have done nothing toward making it habit able and secure. Tbey have scarlet fever in the Sheriff's family now.caused no douhby the defective drainage ot the building. This matter has been neglected too long already. Something must be done snd that qnickty. A Craiocs Machisl J. Frank Condon, court reporter in this district, has recently purchased a " stenograph," or short-band writer. It is tbe first one introduced into this part of the State, and it is described as follows by the Johnstown Tribune : It is s small machine weighing about three pounds. It has ten keys, one for each finger, one for tbe two thumbs, snd one for making spaces between words. Each key, excepting the space key, makes, when pressed upon, s small dash upon a slip of paper, something like the characters made bv the old-fashioned telegraph Instrument, except that an ink ribbon is used as in the type-writer, and the dashes are made across the paper instead of lengthwise. Five short dashes ore so com bined and written in varioss positions as to make all tbe characters necessary for writ. ing short-hand. For instance, one dash st the left-hand edge of the strip of paper reo- resents d ; st the right-ban J edge of the pa per tbe same dash represents a. Two dashes at the left-hand edge represent TL, tbe same in the middle represent m, snd st tbe right- hand edge s. In this way all tbe necessary characters are secured, the writing ts easily read, snd, it is said, can be executed with great speed. The machine is designed to bold the same relation to short-hand writ ing that the type-writer holds to long-band. Mr. M. M. Bartholomew, of Belleville, 111 s practical stenographer, is the inventor. - It is claimed by those who have learned to nse the stenograph, that persons can learn to write ahort-hsiwi by it much sooner and easier than by the old method. .
