Michael Smith, the condemned murderer of John Minahan, who has been sentenced to be hung on the 23d of September, escaped from the county jail at Ebensburg, Cambria county, Saturday night. The escae was made jossible by assistance from without. It is alleged that the parties who aided him hid in the cellar during the day, and about midnight removed the grating from the heater in the corridor, and were then at Smith's cell. The heavy bar of iron across the cell door, that was well locked was sawed off, and when this was done Smith' tor of the & P. R. -K. Transit, who has kind ly permitted us to clip from his monthly publication. One of the heaviest cuts on the South Pennsylvania is near Donegal, Westmore land county. It will be 70 feet deep and 1,500 feet long. We understand that' the original idea of trestling Healthy Run, at Fairview, about four miles west of Xew Baltimore, ihh county, bas been abandoned, and instead of a trestle 1,000 feet long and 10S feet high they will make a solid fill the entire dis tance. At the Quemaboning Tunnel, about five miles northwest of Somerset, there is at least another month's work on the approach cuts before the portals will be reached. The ma terial so far is hard pan, with very little rock on the west end. There bas been con siderable water met with on both sides. Collins Brothers have made very rapid progress on their contract, which extends ten miles west of the Summit, two and a half miles north of Somerset. In the past four months they bsve completed seven cuts, averaging about fifteen feet in depth, and six to seven hundred feet long. They haye finished a little over five miles. At Sideling Hill tunnel, the longest on the line, in Fulton county, the headings at both ends are fairly in, but not much more, and are timbered continuously. The same, is the case at Ray's Hill tunnel, in Bedford county, where, however, they are in some distance. The timbering here is done with great care, as it is intended to be permanent. The " Big Cut," as it is called, ninety five feet deep, and twelve hundred feet long three miles east of Allegheny Mountain Tunnel, in Somerset county, is, railroad men say, progressing very rapidly, but to the average man most wonderfully slow. The seventy-five-foot fill lengthens at the rate of fifteen feet per month. This, when completed, will be the deepest cut in the country. The Allegheny Mountain Tunnel is making steady progresx. The headings are now over 800 feet in. Lately seventy three feet were driven in one week. To ac complich this a total force of oyer 2j0 men per day were kept busily at work, assisted by steam derricks, compressors, and a small locomotive. The tunnel is lighted by elec tric light, and men work day and night. Great difficulty has been experienced from the beginning at the west cud, and timber ing has been almost continuous, as the heading progresses through all sorts ot un desirable materials, coal, fire-clay, slate, shale, water, etc. A very hard rock, closely approximating granite, bas, however, stead ily been rising from the bottom, and gives promise of a better prospect. At the east end the material is a hard sand-stone, and work goes on smoothly. Excavation or the foundations of tbeS. P. 1L R. arch over the S. AC. K. R. at the , Summit, two and a halt miles north of Som erect has been going on steadily for the past six weeks, but with some difficulty, as the material bas to be taken out so as not to dis turb the sides of the cut, which are to form the backing of the arch walls when laid, The material encountered h mostly sand stone, in layers from one to ten inches deep, and cut obliquely by fissures, some of which are the result of the violent shaking up it received when the Somerset and Cambria cut was blown out A solid base tor laying stone was reached on the East side about a week ago, at a depth of two and a half feet below the Somerset and Cambria grade, and masons are now engaged in placing the huge blocks of stone in position, which are unloaded from the cars on a sideing recent ly laid by Contractor James, and extending under the entire arch that is to be, by a horae-nower derrick. On the west side they will have to go much deeper to iind solid base. The stone are brought from two quarries about midway between Kantner's and Roberts' stations, on the Somerset and Cambria Railroad. The arch is to be 27 feet span, and will De aoout u leet long, i wo hundred feet away, on the ease side of the arch, the big67-foot fill is rapidly approach ing completion, and no wonder, when an average of 175 car loads of material go whiz zing daily down Messrs. Shields and gravity railway. sleeping accommodations to the military, veteran 'and civic organizations who are coming in large numbers. Meals will be provided for the multitude at 2S cents each on toe ground. Camp Thoburn and the en tire city will be lit up by electricity daring the reunion and night will be turned into dayjfor this festive occasion. Henderson's Island is connected with the central portion of the city at the foot of Mill Street, so that those who wish to "paint the town red" can do so without danger of falling into the mill race. As we have beard a great many complaints made this summer in regard to stealing fruit and as we know that this offence bas been indulged in to a considerable extent, we think it an appropriate time to call tbe at tention of the public to the law relating to this and like kind of trespassing in the State. The following is the law now in force in reference to this kind of trespass ing : " The wilful taking and carrying away of any fruit, vegetables, plants or ornamen tal trees, yin-s or shrubs, whether attached to the sail or not, shall be deemed a misde meanor, and the offender may be prosecu ted and punished as such, and on conviction in a court of quarter sessions, shall be fined not exceeding fifty dollars and imprisoned not exceeding sixty days, one-half the pen alty to go to the informer and the other half to go to the owner or occupant of Uie prem ises oa which the trespass shall have been committed, and, and in default of payment ot said fine with costs, the party convicted shall be committed to the jail of said coanry not less than twenty, and not more than sixty days." This is a very severs law, and a few enforcements of it would do much towards breaking Bp this prowling around other people's premises and taking their choicest, and ften the only fruit they have. We know gardens in Somerset that bare been robbed of peaches, applea and pi urns, tbe trespassers probably not being aware of the severe penalty attached to the offence, i Tbe fruit thieve must go. 1 This is said in true earnestness. People who liye in the mountains, and breathe the pure, free air of heaven from one year's end to the other don't appreciate the bracing and invigorat ing air around them, and it is left for us city folks, with our systems charged with malaria, to occasionally remind the "frosty sons" that part of their heaven is on earth, ami they don't seem to know it. Well, now for the Reunion. Of course it is expected that every old veteran in Somer set countv will be here this week to renew that old bond which cost so much of life, limb and property. Companies B, C, and G, of the old 54th, with Col. Jake Campbell at the head should be on the ground, if no one else, for these companies formed part of the West Virginia army and did gallant ser vice under its able commanders. Be this as it may, old Cumberland is alive to tbe occa sion, and she greets her brave defenders with joyous and fraternal welcome amidst the waving of banners, thundering of mighty cannon, and cheering strains of music that vanishes pains and aches, inspires rig orous manhood, and fills the heart to over flowing. A royal greeting awaits yon. Of course, where the veteran goes the family poes also. Bring aloug the boys and giris, sure, the fathers and mothers of the future. who are to take our places in tbe world's j make-op. j The town is beautifully decorated. The ! Society of the Army of West Virginia has been very energetic in planning this elev enth annual meeting, and its officers expect that the crowds that will be present will far exceed any former gathering, so that unusu al prejiarations have been made to accom modate the throng. The reunion'will coyer three days, and an elaliorate programme is arranged to cover that period, as follows : First Day, Tuesday, September 2. Meetings of Army Society, trades display, canoe race, etc Second Pay, Wednesday, September 3. Meetings of Society, Great Western Band Concert, band picnic, base ball match shooting matches, etc. - . Third Day, Thursday, September 4. iirand parade, meetings of Society, tournament, etc The meetings of the society will be held at the ' wigwam," which has been built for the occasion at large expense by the citizens of Cumberland. It seats 4,000 pople ; and besides the business meetings in the wig wam, there will be concerts, speeches, story telling, singing of familiar songs, reading of poems, Ac, the whole proceeding conduct ed with a view of fostering the fraternal feelings between the men who fought that this glorious onion might live. It is ex pected teat nearly all of the great generals of the war will be present and take part in the exercises. Gen. B. F. Kelly has been designated Chief Marshal, and is already on the ground. Ex-President Bays will arrive on Taesdiy. He will be accompanied by his wife "Lucy," tbe heroine of temperance in the White House. Here now temper ance people show your appreciation of the woman who knew the right and did it by firing the demijohns oat of the Executive Mansion. Come down from the hilltops and valleys and greet this plain and beanti-, ful woman by tbe thousands. On Saturday night the local malitia took charge of "Camp Thoburn."
