The moral of this is that if a man wants to
see his name iu writing, be hau better eu-
i roll it with a slate iencil. Things have
come to such a sa that, as an exchange
truly remarks, it is unsafe to sign even a
teins-rauce pledge without first consulting

The election ssel off very quietly iu
Somerset, only about a two thirds vote be
ing sll.d The eitire Republican ticket
was elected. bH withstanding the fai-t tbat
tnanv of the Independents resorted to their
old trick of attending tbe primary and then
voting against the ticket which they assisted
to place in nomination. Some of them voted
the straight-out Democratic ticket, while
others did considerable "scratching." Their
priucial effort was made against Geo. W.
Pile, chairman, and John tt. Scott, Esq.,
secretary, ol the Republican county com
mittee, candidates for arli.Mil director-, and
L. C. Colhorn, Esq , candidate for burgess,
but as the returns in another column will
show their efforts, as rsual. proved futile,
and the three "obnoxious Stalwarts" were
elected along with the balance of their
brethren on the ticket, which, by the way,
was made up of straight-out Republicans
from burgess down to auditor.
Judge Breden. of Butler comity, has just
rendered a decision which will be read wi'h
great interest. It seems that the bwu coun
cil of Kittanning refused to allow tbe chief
burgess to preside at cocncil meetings, and
he in turn refused to sign orders on tbe tax
duplicate. A bill was filed and a pereiupb
ry mandamus requiring his compliance was
asked in the itinn The judge reviews
the various acts of Asembiy concerning the
organization of the borough, and concludes
his long and elaborate opinion as follows
We are of the opinion that in the bor
ough of Kittanning the burgess is an iute
grat part of the legislative power of the
municipality, and cannot lawfully be ex
cluded from the meetings of the corporate
officers at a hich, as chief officer of the ror
notation, he is entitled to preside, and do
therefore hold the answer of the respondent
to be sufficient in law, iflhe facts are a
therein sta'ed, and refu.e the motion for a
rreniit'ry mandamus made on the iitsiif
ficiencv of said answer.

Hall's Jimmnl if Ilmlth gives us some
hinl that it will be wie to give strict heed
to. It says:
U anil v a day parses in this climate of nnrs,
between tlie chilly das of autumn and the
month t:f June, that the community is not
startled by tlieannouncemtntof the sud-hn
death of some prominent man, who has
been the head. terha, of vast enterj -rises
We feel almost certain, before making the
inquiry, that tbe immediate cause of death
was pneumonia. Tbe obituary probably
repeats that threadbare untruth about the
"inscrutable nivsteriea of Providence."
There ia really no mvstery about it Bosi
new men, and particularly Americans, are
intent ou pushing their business tbat they
lose siaht of all else. They think they have
no time to be ill. and in many instances
they only realize the danger of delay when
the shadow of death is upon them. Had
they less ambition to ' die rich" they would
be more likely to heed tbe warnings of dan
ger that are always given, and then not one
rase of pneumonia in one hundred would
prove fatal. Any person and particularly
one over forty years of age who neglects a
severe cold a' thia season of the year is in
danger of pneumonia. The only safe plan
is to remain in a warm, comfortable ronm
or in severe eases in bed, employing eut a
remedies ay .may be prescribed by a compe
tent physician. If there is delay in taking
care of one's self until the inflamation is
established, there is great danger of a fatal
resnlt.

money. , "Fossil Marl" ia just such a fertil
iser. It does not grow a large and useless
: atock or vine but gives tbe plants a natural
aarady growth, with tbe same results as you
would obtain from good barn yard manure ;
and every farmer ktn.wna what a fertilizer
good barn yard manure is. Fossil Marl
niay be termed a substitute for it, but better
in many re specks. Fossil Marl does not
grow weeds, while manure always will.
It is quite nnlike Pbospbate as it bas no
disagreeable smell, and does not bum the
germ of the seed. You cannot handily get
too much on an acre, and above all it is a
first class top dressing for grass, for which
Phosphate ramtof be Used. It can be broad
casted or drilled in the ground. Ita durabil
ity and lasting qualities iu the grvund U
from three to five years, and it sells for
about one-half tbe cost of Phosphate and
otber fertilizers. A good, reliable agent is
wanted in every township in the coanty.
