This is tbe season when the world is gay est and gladdest not that external nature's smile i hrhjiest, but that the very air we bn athe is tsaring to us on its wings the grand old Message that unto all the world a child is born. Oh, wondrous Message, that can soenthrall the age! I acknowledge thy power, i salute thy source, forsurely good must have been begotten of good. A strain that has preserved its purity through eighteen centuries of time, and been the glory and inspiration of humanity while dynasties and generations have crumbled to nothingness, asks more than Reason's gauge of me. It is always the in telligent, reading, progressive people who support ail enterprises that partake of a public nature, and this is one in which every resident of the county is interested in assisting to a successful completion, for aside from its great historic interest, and tbe perjet uaiiug of the memories of residents of this county, it will benefit us financially by properly representing our vast undevelop ed resources, which the railroads now make available, and tend to indue capitalists to pour, their wealth into our county. The publishers will have to be almost unani mously supported, or they will not be guar anteed in the immense outlay represented in collecting the history, writing and pub lishing it iu such fine style as they propose, which will only do just credit to our county. As a representative of the firm calls on us individually, let us receive him cordially and give them the necessary encouragement for it certainly will not reflect credit ujiou us to have this mist laudable enterprise fail. We Want Yoc. Each year newspapers are becoming more and more local in ttieir nature, and the one which is the most suc cessful in gathering the news while it is fresh and presenting it to its readers in an acceptable manner is duly accorded the highest place in the estimation of the peo ple. To this aim the IIkbald has been la boring of late years, and thrugh it is to-day considered the best local paper printed iu the county, it shall be our purpose during the coming year to extend our lines, glean more carefully the local news field, and re cord more of the happenings of the county, weekly, than we have been able to do in the pact. We m ill endeavor by all the means and agencies at our command to make the local columns of this pHcr one ol its main features, evincing to ail that it is a live, fearless, wide awake, local japer. To assist in accomplishing these ends we want a re siousible, reliable and regular correspond, cut iu every township, who will take pains in sending the news, free from puffs, person al prejudices, or of an advertising taint, weekly, (in a condensed form) to our otiice, We mean by a regular correspondent, one that will be prompt iu writing when there isanythirig to note, and when there is not send nothing. We haven't room for sensa tionalism, attempts at "fine writing," am plification for the pursise of consuming space,- hat wc desire is the general news of your section, given to us in as few words as possible. Nutt, cashier of the Stale Treasury, by X. L. Pukes. Democratic member elect to the State Leg islature, at Uniontown, Sunday afternoon, is taken from a Pittsburgh daily: I'siontows, December 24. Shortly before ten o'clock this morning, when people were on the way to church, the town was thrown into a Slate of most intense excitement by a report that Captain A. C. Nutt, cashier ol the Pennsylvania State Treasyry, had been shot and killed in his room in Jenning's Hotel by X. L. Dukes, a well-known mem ber of the Fayette county bar and member elect of the State Legislature. The high so cial and political standing of both men gave such prominence to the affair that the hotel was soon surrouuded with excited citizens. Captain Xutt bad just returned from Harrisburg to spend the holidays, and left home with his nephew, Mr. Brecken ride, stating that he had some business at the hotel with Mr. Pukes. On the way there he stated that he had received some infamous letters from Pukes and wanted -o have an understanding with him. Tlie two men went to the hotel, and Xutt started up to Puke's room. Ureckenridge followed, but stopped on the stairs to speak to a friend. While they were conversing a scuffling was heard in the room and both ran up to sepa rate the combatants, who were found on the floor, clinched in a terrible struggle. Breckenridge and his friend succeeded in parting them, when Pukes drew a revolver and said: "You came iu here to whip me and so I shoot," at the same time firing. The ball took effect just below Kutt's eye, penetrating the brain and killing him in stantly. Pukes then quietly walked down stairs, where he was arrested. The affair has created intense excitement, but what was in the letters or the motive which led to the murder is sti'.l a mystery. The new line will parallel the Pennsylva nia Central from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh, and will be located at an average distance of thirty miles south of the latter road. Robert H. Sayre, Esq., for more than thirty years superintendent and engineer of the Lehigh Yailey railroad, is the president and general manager of the new road, lie has ji st returned from a trip over ttie line of tbe Mad and is enthusiastic over the out look, a. grade that does not reach over C8 feet to tbe mile going west and 52 feet coin ing east has been secured over the Alleghe iiies and the balance of the line he finds en tirely feasible and comparatively inexpen sive, both as to construction and right of way privileges. The line will traverse the German Yalley south of Harrisburg, thence along one of the forks of th Juniata and westward along the Youghiogheny. It will be doable tracked, rock ballasted, laid with steel rails and in construction and equipment will profit by the best roads in the world. Branch lines have been projected, and one to Wheel ing will probably be built about the same time as the main line. It is believed that two years will see the road completed, and another great trunk line added to the American railway sys tem. Mr. Sayre is now in New York com pleting arrangements for the immediate prosecution of the work. There has been considerable scnlation as to the real own ers and projectors of this bold enterprise. All that is positively known is that the money necessary for the building of the road is subscribed, and that in connection with the leading's Yaiiey and East Peiin branches it will revive the once widely ad vertised and popular "Allentown route," and through the same find an outlet to New ork. It is surmised that the new line is the child ol the Gowen-Vanderbilt combi nation, and also that at Allentown a con nection will be made with the New Jersey Central railroad by bridging the Lehigh. These are, however, mere surmises, and a connection with the Lehigh Valley road is just as likely, especially if the latter should carry out its purpose of extending its New Jersey division into New York. This new line will, it is claimed, shorten the distance between Pittsburgh and Xew York about forty tniles as compared with the Pennsyl vania. It is not necessary to pick our words in mentioning the Philadelphia Timt, the prospectus of which journal appears in another column. The 7ii has got to be a sort of necessity with some people of this community and it ought to be with many more. It has many imitators all over the land, but there is really nothing like 7"ir 77am from Maine to California We have persuaded ourselves at times that the reason the people like it so much is that it is con stantly giving its readers juicy bites from the sunny sideof the journalistic peach.
