Kro(u last week's DemocnU it is clearly ev ident that (he literary talent of the family is not con lined exclusively to its ostensible editor, tut that its uncle, the genial "Scien tific," when he has finished his work of bossing conventions, betraying his friends, violating his pledges, and selling the suf frages of his brethren, can sharjien his quill, .'iilurge the scoie of his imagination and trnVe. As a very general thing the produc tions of his brain and quill that apK-ar in public print are simple, silly, harmless af fnirs that work not hurt or injury to any one. But last week he diverged from his accustomed groove when he struck the melo dramatic strain and wrote a comedy in two acts, in which his life-long friend, General Kooutz, figures as the principal character, and several other of our fellow townsmen also apjiear. The ierlormance ojiens in the most ap proved style, with fcur of the actors on the stage discussing Hlitics. I'hl is declared to he of no aix-ouiit and Koontzisd d, when sud denly "a terrific jioci of lightning made the earth tremble, audits confiscations il luminated the heavens for miles around, throwing a bright light and exposing their ghastly appearance, etc," then all at once the foot lights arc extinguished, the curtain is rung down and the scene is transferred to "General Koontz' alley," and here the Gen eral is heartlessly deserted by the writer and left in his own alley "in the dark hours of the niht in mournful accents crying, G-u-i-t-e-a-u." The play is good, full of humor, and w predict an immcne run for both it and its author this fall. The only criticism we have to oiler is that it stops too suddenly and leaves its principal character in too painful a predicament. The writer should put himsell in the place of his principal character, just for an instant, and we think he will realize what an embarrassing posi tion it is ana will readily see the force of our remarks, let him place himself in an "ailey" in "the dark hours of the night" shouting "Guiieau." He had no financial trouble, as there were over five hundred dollars found in his trunk at the time of his death, and his father was abundantly able and willing to have reliev ed him from any embarrassment of this kind. He was engaged to be married in a few weeks to the lady of his choice, and liM engagement met with the sanction and ep proval of his areiits. Ross Lichty was a moral, uptight young man, well liked and thought of by all who knew him, and his death and the manner of his dying has brought a deep pain and sorrow to his ja rents as well as to a large circle of friends. In last week's issue of the Meyersdale Cummereitil Dictator Smith ad mits the fact that the Independent faction of the Republican party is largely made up of ex-oflicials. Having been unable to re sist so palpable a fact any longer, he now tries to argue that, because those who were once honored and trusted by the Republican voters, but have since left the. party, that it is reflecting npon the intelligence of thoc who elected them not to follow them into the Indcendent camp In reply to the Som erset Herald he says: "In heaping abuse upon those men who have been honored by the party it evidently forgets that it abuses the j.eople they represent, and casts reflec tions on the wisdom of the jeop!cs' choice and on their ability to properly exercise the right of suffrage." If those ex-worthies had been elected ujsiii the ludejiendent issue, there might be shows that pervading the breast of man is a fine sentiment that is never entirely oblit erated. The greater the intelligence, the more the refinement of the people, the more considerate they are of each other's feelings anil the more tenderly are their memories Cherished, which is shown forth to the world by recording them in history. If we as a people wish our history record ed, and we have a very interesting one, ex tending back into the seventeenth century, let us step forward and oirer the necessary financial assistance to the publishing hou-e of Waterman, Watkius it Co., as they call onus individually.
