Judge Tourgcc recently said of the press
ure of modern liTe that twenty-four honrs
of such responsibility and strain as now
cames uK)ii the average American would
have killed the strongest man the eigh
teenth century ever shone upon. "Only
think," said he, "of George Washington
making war with a brigade of reporters in

grace with a telephone in his room, and 10,

It may not, jierhaps, lie known that a
man wearing dark, clothes is more liable to
infection from contagious diseases than lie
who wears light-colored garments, because
particles which emanate from diseases or
decaying bodies are much more readily ab
sorbed by dark than by light fabric. This
is easy of proof. Expose a light and dark
coat to the fumes of toliacco for five minutes,
and it will be found that the dark one
smells stronger than the other of tobacco
smoke, and it will retain the odor longer.
A young lady of Johnstown, X. Y., while
bathing in Chautauijuc Lake, hail a novel
experience. A snapping turtle caught her
by the ear. Her screams brought friends to
her assistance, or she would . certainly have
been drowned ; but the turtle's grip was
like a bull-dog's, and after his head had
been cut ofT it took ten minutes to pry the
jaws apart. It will take a good deal of po
etry out of bathing in Chautauqua Lake.
Sharks at Long Branch and Coney Island
and snapping turtles at Chautixpia arc not
soothing to the nerves of timid bathers.
"People who like to study human nature,
will find a subject to interest them," an ex
change thinks, "in watching the counte
nances of those who take cards, handbills,
etc., from sidewalk advertisers. There is
the first recognition of the proffered object,
a glimmer of curiosity a to its nature, a
sense of shame at the prospect of lieing
fooled, a hasty grasp, and then a covert in
spection, the discovery of an invitation to
partake of a fiftccn-ccnt lunch, and the
angry throwing away of the paper or card

ProUionotary Schell has received the
necessary books, and is now preparing to
register physicians under the late act of As

a graduate of a legally chartered medical
college or university having authority to
confer the degree of doctor of medicine, ex
cept those who have been in continuous
practice since 171. AH must register ond
all must bring their diplomas along. Those
failing to comply with the provisions of
the act shall, upon conviction, iiy a fine of
$100 or lie imprisoned in the county jail

A man named Stickncy lielongmg to Batch

in jail at I'niontown a short time ago. Mr.
J. V. Strebig, advance agent of the show,
was sent back to that place for the purpose
of getting the prisoner released. He failed
to accomplish his mission. He reports that
Stickney is one of the cooks connected with
the show, and brought back a number of
affidavit from the other cooks to the effect
that Stickncy was not and could not have
leen away from the cirens grounds at the
time the burglary was committed. On the
other hand, the burglar wr.s seen to enter
Mr. Bowman's house and leave it again in

It seems to be a characteristic failin;
most drivers to lay the lash upon ahorse
that exhibits Tear ut an object in the street
or beside the road. Mr. Bergh, Presiden
of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals, says in the organ of that socie
ty what every reasoning being ought to
know to never whip a horse for lieconiing
frightened at any object along by tho road
side, for if he sees a stump, a log, or a heap
ortan bark in the road, and, while he is
eyeing it carcrully and about to pass it, you
strike him with the whip, it is the log, or
stump, or tan bark that is hurting him in
his way of reasoning, and the next time he
will be more frightened. Give him time to
smell all these objectcs, and use the bridle
to assist you in bringing him carefully to
those objects of fear.
The inhabitants of New Mexico do not
tand upon the technicalities of the law in
dealing with desperadoes. A certain Mr.
McCarthy, formerly of Xew York, and let
ter known a- "Billy the Kid," a promising
young man of twenty-one, whose proud
boast it was that lie had killed a man for
every year of his life, has lately been pur
sued, and shot dead on sight, bv'a sherifl
near Las Vegas. The coroner's jury which
sat on the liody thus energetically furnished
for its use, rendered a verdict of justifiable
homicide, and passed a vote of thanks to the
sheriff for ridding tho community of this
remarkable young man, who seems to have
made himself a terror to the region. Furth
ermore, the sheriff will receive a handsome
reward from the State, ond be the recipient
of a popular subscription.
Fanners who desire to rid their fields of
bushes and brambles should take advanta;
of the long days in August, when the sap is
nearly all outof the roots ortrees and brambles
to cut them close to the ground. A week's
lelay because or the pressure or business on
the rami, will make it necessary to do the
work over again another season. Whereas,
ir all bushes and brambles were cut off the
last week in July or the first week in Au.
gust, an effectual end will be made of them
nd thus future trouble avoided. Nothing
more mars the beauty of a farm than to see
fences and ditch banks lined with hedgt
rows and bushes, and weeds of unbidden
growth. Work now done iu this direction
is paving, and telling work for the farmer.
Houtzdale lady writes to her parentsi

to the following horrible story about a
Swedish miner residing at Houtzdale who
went to the mountains in search of berries
on Sunday. Not returning home in due
time search was made for him, when he
was found dead with innumerable rattle
snakes fastened to and leolin upon ins

The Governor has approved a bill which

One day last week, Ucv. J. A. Rccbt-r,
while drawin;; water from the well nt the
rcsidcacc of J. E. IKiwncs, of this place,
brought up a live subterranean fish. It was
between four and five inches lone;, of a
light jiink color, and without eyes or scalcx.
Its mouth resembled that of a sucker, and it
had the regulation fish smell. The stream
of the. well in question is very strong, and
the 8ui'poitin is that it was carried away
from its home in some subterranean lake or
pool by the force of the current. Notwith
standing it was eyeless, its aversion to the
light, or the' npjier air was marked. Mr.
Uecbcr placed the specimen in alcohol for
preservation. Eyeless fish are common in
many of the large caves of the country, and
are numerous in the celebrated Mammoth
Cave in Kentucky. A gentleman who has
visited 'VVatkin's Glen informs us that in a
cavern at that place, the many pools are in
habited by fish of this character. l'ulton

More than twenty years ago, when it was
found that prevention of cholera was easier
than cure, a prescription drawn np by emi
nent doctors was published in the Xcw York
Sun, and it took the name of the .Sun cholera
medicine. In republishing it the Xew York
JunrinJ of C'mittnercc says : "Our contem
porary never lent its name to a better arti
cle. We have seen it in constant use for
nearly two score ol years, and found it to he
the best remedy for looseness of the liowels
ever yet devised. Xo one who has this by
him and takes it in time will ever have tlie
cholera. We commend it to all our friends."
Even when cholera is not anticipated, it is
an excellent remedy for ordinary summer
complaints, colic, diarrlnea, dysentery, etc. :
Take equal parts of tincture Cayenne repier,
tincture of opium, tincture of Irlinbarb, es
sence of peppermint and spirits! camphor.
Mix well. Dose fifteen or twenty drops in
a little cold water, according to ape and vio
lence of symptoms, repeated every fifteen
or twenty minutes tinti' relief is obtained.
The romantic story of the elopement of
Miss Nellie Hubbard, the daughter of ex
Governor Hubbard, of Connecticut, with
the family coachman, Frank Sheiard, two
years ago, has not been forgotten. The se
quel to the story proves that Shepard was
not prompted by any expectations of help
from his father-in-law. Ho has a rich uncle
living in Middletown, Connecticut, who
supplied him with capital to establish him
in business in a livery stable at Xcw Haven,
and it has proved quite profitable. Mm.
Shepard drives her pha-ton through the
steeets, and is well received by many of her
old friends. Sho keeis up a thoroughly
stylish ajqiearance, and has money enough
from her husband to convince all that she
is not living in poverty. Sho occasionally
visits Hartford to see her mother and sis
ters, and is said to be in perfect health and
looking prettier than ever. As Uncle John,
who befriended them, lias no children, she
mar be a rich woman vet.
Why Wea I'lastkbs? They may re
lieve, but they can't cure that lame back,
for the kidneys are the trouble and you
want a remedy to act directly on their se
cretions, to purify and restore their healthy
condition. Kidney -Wort lias that specific
action and at the same time it regulates
the bowels perfectly. Don't wait to get
sick, but get a package to-day, and cure
yourself. Either liquid or dry for sale at
the druggists. Binghamtun RtyuUlcmt.
