The contest for the nomination for the
various county otlices was waged with con
siderable vigor in Somerset, Saturday, but
was entirely free from any bad feeling or
quarreling. I lie turnout was unusually
lar as the vote will show. The result in
this borough was made known about 10
o'clock at night, but the township board
did not finish their labors until an carlv
hour in the morning. Mr. C. C. Orion's to

proprietor had it illuminated and the awn

their hopes or confirm their disappoint

About nine o'clock Thursday morning
the planning mill of Mr. Isaac Jones, with
all its contents, was entirely destroyed by
fire. The building was a large frame struct
ure, situated a short distance south of town,
and contained great deal of valuable ma
chinery. It is not definitely known how
the Cre originated, but as there was no fire
in the furnace and no one at work in the
building at the time, the general ininprcs
sion is that it was set on fire by an incendi
ary or through the carelessness of some
tramp who slei there during tlie night and
in lighting his pie in the morning threw
the match, while it was still burning, into
a pile of saw-dust, where the flame slum
bered until fanned into a blaze by the wind.
Every ossible effort was made by the citi
zens to subdue the conflagration but without
avail. The loss to Mr. Jones will foot up
about $5,W0, and unfortunately there was
no insurance. The building also contained
all the carpenter tools of Mr. Frank Gran

frames, etc., which he iuid worked out dur

the party were comfortably quartered at

they were treated courteoutly and kindly ;
nothing being left undone that could add to

Wednesday many of the excursionists
visited New York, the trip being made by

Thursilay was devoted to sight-seeiot;
bathing and shaking hands with the Presi

sumptuous, and many and good were the
speeches made by members of the press from

Eu. IIeuald. As a number of your read
ers have in the past been contributors to the
funds of tlie Mt. Pleasant Classical and
Scientific Institute, they may be interested
in a few jottings from this place.
The institute has just closed the eighth
year of its work, and the anniversary meet
ing was one long to be remembered by
those who had the good fortune to be pres
ent. The examinations showed that ex
cellent work had been done in all the de
partments of the school, and reflected great
credit upon both teachers and pupils. The
meeting of the board of trustees, which oc
curred on Wcdncsilav afternoon the 22nd
inst., was well attended and the report of
the financial condition of the Institute was
especially gratifying. Tho debt which for
a few years past lias been burdening the
boanl has been greatly reduced, and it is
now believed that another year will see its
entire liquidation. The energetic President,
Rev. I Clepheus, A. M., expects from this
time foreward to spend most ofhistimein
the school, giving his attention to ithe su
pervision of its general work. The faculty
for tlie coming year, will not be diminished,
so that by the presence of tho President in
the institute tho teaching force will be in
creased.
On Wednesday evening the literary socie
ties were addressed by Rev. Ilildrcth, D. D.,
of Pittsburgh, whose theme was "Charac
ter, and its Relation toSuccess in life." Dr.
Ilildrcth is a forcible sieaker and showed
himself fully master of his subject.
The commencement exercises, proper
took place on Tuesday afternoon. The large
crowd of people in attendance showed the
increased interest the community feels in
the institute. The programme consisted of
orations, essays and music, and all the per
formances, both with regard to matter and
names of presentation, wero excellent; and
fully sustained the high opinion we had al
ready formed of tlie character of the work
done in our presence at the examinations.
The President's address to the gradimting
class was full of pertinent thought and in
struction. The music was rendered by
members of the institute, and consisted of
choruses, solos, and duets, with piano ac
companiments. At the close of the com-
mencmcnt exercises came the annual "feast
of fat things," tlx commencement dinner.
Here the Mt. Pleasant ladies fully sustained
the reputation they have always had for be
ing able to meet the wants of the most fas
tidious. Everything that heart or appetite
oonld wish, was to be found on the tables.
So rich and palateablc was the repast, that
strange as it may seem, even the preachers,
of whom there were many peesent, seemed
to enjoy it. Next came the "after dinner
speeches," where wit and humor had their
usual sway. Addresses were delivered on
th .art of the board trustees by Hon.
W Shallenberger, M. C, from the Bca-
ve district, Ta., I'rof. X. B. Critchtield, of
Berlin, Ta., and Rev. B. F. Woodburn, of
Allegheny city, Pa, The alumni were rep
resented by Messrs. Kratus Loucks, of Stc-
nerville, Pa., and Benjaminn Lightbum, of
Flatwood, Pa., while visitors were repre
sented by Hon. . Campbell, of Mc Kces-
portandRcv. Dr. Ilildrcth, of Pittsburgh
The entire programme for commencment
week closed with a banquet given by the
alumni on Thursday evening. It has been
our privilege to attend a number of college
commencements, but we do not remember
ever having attended any one that was more
enjoyable, or impressed us more favorably
with the school at which it was given.

JUNE, GOND-BYE ! WELCOME, Jl'LY
BV it. S. LAXB.
Farewell sweet June, we'll ne'er forget
Thy oders sw eet and rare ;
Green carpets bright beneath thy feet
Of flowers rich and fair.
Thy gala dress is sunlight sheen,
And bees drink honey dew ;
Of all the mnnths thou art the green
We sigh farewell to you.
Thy balmy breath so Eden like.
Pi reunial life in bloom,
O lovely youth of heavenly type '
Slay with us blooming June.
We dearly love thy sparkling light,
( f sun and silver moon ;
We admire thy bright stars by night,
Yet farewell lovely June.
We never shall forget the joy
Of odors sweet in June,
That point to life hi paradise,
Even to ati endless June.
Yet harvest naves across the plain
And noils his golden head ;
We cannot of our loss complain,
Since July brings us bread.
There's slight regret for lleeting hourj
Where richer fruit is given ;
We'll not regret to part with flowers
"If harvest brings us heaven.
Bloom on sweet youth, let flowers spring
And haste the harvest moon ;
July with us is crowned our King
Our Queen is floral June.
