The building was a large frame struct ure, situated a short distance south of town, and contained great deal of valuable ma chinery. It is not definitely known how the Cre originated, but as there was no fire in the furnace and no one at work in the building at the time, the general ininprcs sion is that it was set on fire by an incendi ary or through the carelessness of some tramp who slei there during tlie night and in lighting his pie in the morning threw the match, while it was still burning, into a pile of saw-dust, where the flame slum bered until fanned into a blaze by the wind. Every ossible effort was made by the citi zens to subdue the conflagration but without avail. The loss to Mr. Jones will foot up about $5,W0, and unfortunately there was no insurance. The building also contained all the carpenter tools of Mr. Frank Gran ger and a large number of doors, window frames, etc., which he iuid worked out dur ing the winter to be used in the construc tion of his new house which he U building ou Turtcyfoot street. Mr. Granger is one of our best carpenters who by hard work and close economy had sa . ed sufficient to build himtclf a home. Hi loss is about The many warm friends oflxith gen tlemen sympathize with them in their misfortune. On Saturday last Mr. P. l!oll!ey"s Pcr- cheron Ilnrse Sultan passed through town o:i his way home from Ifagerstown, where he had been for the past three mouths. He undoubtedly is the finest specimen of the 1'erchiTon Horse we have ever seen, and is pronounced so by the licet judges. He will take the place of the young horse that died recently and will stand for thirty day only at il5 insurance: will then be taken to Illair county for the fall season. Mr. Hcf tley should receive the patronage of our en terprising fanners, from the fact that he has done perhaps more than any other man in the county to improve the stock of horses, and for his pluck, having lost two very val uable stock horses in the past four years. The Coy et. Director Swift, of the AVar- ncr observatory, Uoclicster, N. V., says the new comet grows smaller and brighter in the nucleus, showing that it is approaching the sun. The head !s active and the tail does not obscure the stars. He thinks it will be visible sever.-.' weeks. It appeared on the 2;th to be about r,9,(XlO,000 miles from the sun and 2',000,'KiO miles from the earth. The dim 'nsions compntcd by the astronomers, w'.ich show the diameter of the nucleus to be about 1,000 miles, the diaiueter of tha coma 12,000 and the length of tail 4,0ti, leave no doubt in their minds Dat it is the comet of 1S0T. Great activity is apparent in its head. It rises earlier every night. It is expected that sjiectroscopic examination, now for the first time possible, will reveal much of tlie physical character of comets. Mr. S. T. Ihivis, a flagman on the Som erset A Cambria Railroad, met with an ac cident at the summit, a little past midnight, Vt ednesday night, which necessitated the amputation of one of his feet. The train with one engine in front and two behind, was running at a fair rateof sjiecd and when it reached the summit the two "helpers" were cut loose. Davis was on the caboose hanging out the colored lights when a sud den jolt threw him from his position and the two engines passed over his left foot mashing it to a jelly. Dr. Henry P.rubaker, physician and surgeon for the S. A C. R. R. Co., assisted by Drs. H. S. Kimmell and J. 0. Kiernan performed the operation of cut ting it off at the ankle. -Mr. Davis is a young man of about twenty-five years of age, is a son-in-law of Wm. Gilbert and has the reputation of being honest, sobcraud in dustrious. On this page we give a tabular statement of the result of the late Republican primary. I!y reference to the table it will be seen that Hon. A. J. Cnlborn has run two-thirds of the votes polled fir Judge ; Samuel Snyder, of Kriedciis, and Dr. Wm. Collins, of Som erset, have been nominated for Associate Judges ; S. V.T ent.lif Somerset, has receiv ed the nomiiia ion for Prothonotary by a very handsome otc, and A. A. Stut.man, of Shanksville, has been nominated for Register and Recorder by a "good round majority''; John J. Spangler, of Somerset township, is the nominee for Sheriff ; John II. Weiiner, of Somerset, for Treasurer ; Jo seph Horner, of Somerset township, and Adam S. Shafier, of Jenner township are tlie Commissioners ; Daniel Kimmel, of Somerset township, tlie Poor House Direc tor, and John P. Tho members of tha Pennsylvania Edito rial Association with their ladies rendez voused at the Continental Hotel In Phila delphia, on Monday evening last, There were about one hundred gentlemen present at the meeting in parlor "C," when Mr. liuM. Meiininian, the gentlemanly Secretary of the Association, greeted the country press and issued cards for their rooms at Long liranch. The excursion train, made up of a dozen or more bran-splinter new cars, and iu charge of Mr. Wood of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, left Philadelphia promptly at !) a. m. Tuesday morning, and the party were comfortably quartered at "Inland's Ocean Hotel' by dinner, where they were treated courteoutly and kindly ; nothing being left undone that could add to the pleasure of the visitors. The literary and musical entertainment arrange ! by Mr. Meunini.in for Tuesday evening, was most excellent. Wednesday many of the excursionists visited New York, the trip being made by boat, returning in time for tho "compli mentary hop" in the evening. Thursilay was devoted to sight-seeiot; bathing and shaking hands with the Presi dent, and in the evening tho "annual din ncr"' took place. It was both bounteous and sumptuous, and many and good were the speeches made by members of the press from Tennessee, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. That good old "frosty son of thunder,' brother transom of the Indiana Iknuxnit, was one of the happiest of men even if he dul get sea sick and made it iart of his business to see that everyone else was hap- py. The entire pleasure of tho excursion is due to the generosity of that best of railroad companies the Pennsylvania ami to the untiring efforts and exertions of that bi, souled, generous hearted gentleman, who did all that could be done and left no stone unturned for the enjoyment and pleasure of the whole party, Mr. Robert Menniman. We hereby return thanks to General Su perintendent King, of the Pittsburgh Divis ion of the li. A O. llai lroad, for courtesies extended. We didn't behold any extra wonders in the "Jeep blue sea," nor did we listen long to her "ceaseless roar." We wcr'nt non plused "with her grandeur," nor over whelmed "with her majesty" ; but we did roll in the sand and have a bully-good-time generally. Eu. IIeuald. As a number of your read ers have in the past been contributors to the funds of tlie Mt. Pleasant Classical and Scientific Institute, they may be interested in a few jottings from this place. The institute has just closed the eighth year of its work, and the anniversary meet ing was one long to be remembered by those who had the good fortune to be pres ent. The examinations showed that ex cellent work had been done in all the de partments of the school, and reflected great credit upon both teachers and pupils. The meeting of the board of trustees, which oc curred on Wcdncsilav afternoon the 22nd inst., was well attended and the report of the financial condition of the Institute was especially gratifying. Tho debt which for a few years past lias been burdening the boanl has been greatly reduced, and it is now believed that another year will see its entire liquidation. The energetic President, Rev. I Clepheus, A. M., expects from this time foreward to spend most ofhistimein the school, giving his attention to ithe su pervision of its general work. The faculty for tlie coming year, will not be diminished, so that by the presence of tho President in the institute tho teaching force will be in creased. On Wednesday evening the literary socie ties were addressed by Rev. Ilildrcth, D. D., of Pittsburgh, whose theme was "Charac ter, and its Relation toSuccess in life." Dr. Ilildrcth is a forcible sieaker and showed himself fully master of his subject. The commencement exercises, proper took place on Tuesday afternoon. The large crowd of people in attendance showed the increased interest the community feels in the institute. The programme consisted of orations, essays and music, and all the per formances, both with regard to matter and names of presentation, wero excellent; and fully sustained the high opinion we had al ready formed of tlie character of the work done in our presence at the examinations. The President's address to the gradimting class was full of pertinent thought and in struction. The music was rendered by members of the institute, and consisted of choruses, solos, and duets, with piano ac companiments. At the close of the com- mencmcnt exercises came the annual "feast of fat things," tlx commencement dinner. Here the Mt. Pleasant ladies fully sustained the reputation they have always had for be ing able to meet the wants of the most fas tidious. Everything that heart or appetite oonld wish, was to be found on the tables. So rich and palateablc was the repast, that strange as it may seem, even the preachers, of whom there were many peesent, seemed to enjoy it. Next came the "after dinner speeches," where wit and humor had their usual sway. Addresses were delivered on th .art of the board trustees by Hon. W Shallenberger, M. C, from the Bca- ve district, Ta., I'rof. X. B. Critchtield, of Berlin, Ta., and Rev. B. F. Woodburn, of Allegheny city, Pa, The alumni were rep resented by Messrs. Kratus Loucks, of Stc- nerville, Pa., and Benjaminn Lightbum, of Flatwood, Pa., while visitors were repre sented by Hon. . Campbell, of Mc Kces- portandRcv. Dr. Ilildrcth, of Pittsburgh The entire programme for commencment week closed with a banquet given by the alumni on Thursday evening. It has been our privilege to attend a number of college commencements, but we do not remember ever having attended any one that was more enjoyable, or impressed us more favorably with the school at which it was given. : Coyi- EERKEYB1LE FLOT0.
