The most itnportant work of our generation, beyond all cpie-stinn. is the revision of the English Pible, the New Testament of which has just been published. Undertaken ten years ago by a company of themost learned MholarT of, Great Pritalu and the I "lilted Slates, lis com-l-letion has bes n waltesl f ir with gre'ttf de sire by all English speaking christians. Feeling that the objections it has met are neither ne w nor worthy to ('etcrminc its re jection, I wish to set forth two reasons why the Revision should bo cheerfully welcom ed and carefully examined by all christians. 1st. The advance-Me-nt of biblical learning demands a revision of our version. People forged, probably some do not know, that the Cible Wft call "K;ng James's Ycr sion" was largely n revision of what was called the "Fishops' Ptble," and most espe cially of the '"Geneva Pible-," in some plac es borrowing as muedi as seven-eights from the latter source. These in their turn were based on translations before them, reaching back to Tyn.lale's, w hich is the fuuntaui head of English translations from the Greek. Now, it ia pretty generally known to schol ars thai the Creeki.-xt from which ;hsse translations were ma le, t.a neither pure ner ancient. Their manuscripts reached back not farther than about the twelfth cen tury. That the most ancient manuscripts', which alone arc of very great authoti'y, were then unknown to ecir translators i.! ev ident from the following facts about them. 1. The Alexandrian manuscript euice e-e- long to the Greek patriarch of Alexandria, who presented it to Charles I, of England, in 1C.2S 17 vcars after our translation was fin ished. It is now in the Critish Museilm. It dates back to about A. D. -t2. 2. Tne Yatican manuscript in the Vati can Library at Rome. It readies back to alMiut the year A. D. ."::). As valuable as it is it lias been aoe-ess il.le to scholars only a short time. 3. The Ephraem manuscript isiti the Im perial library at Paris. Its date is A. D. 4.V). It contains the Now Te-stamcnl suppos ed to be erased to make way for a Greek work of Ephraem, the Syrian. 4. The manuscript presented to the t'ni-ve-rsity of Cambridge;, by Theolorc Ik?za, in contains the Geispcls and Acts with a Latin translation. Its date is supposed to be about the close of the fifth century". 5. The manuscript found on Mt. Sinai, in IS.'.!, by Dr. Tisohcndorf. This is in same respects the most i m iK.rtant manuscript of the New Testament in the world. It dates back to about A. D. .i. Now our translators did not have a-iy f these. The immense numbers of anelctit copies of the New Testament that have be-en brought to light since their translation i:l 1G11 ; their careful comparisoii by such men as Mill.Griesbadi, Lnchiuan, Tischendoif, Scrivener and Tregelles ; and the conse quent wonderful development of biblical criticism during the last two hnndred years imperatively demanded this revision. M This revision was necessary because all Pible critics of any note agree that there are mauy errors m King James s v ersion. Scan-ely a year had ilsskI away bt-furs bib lical learning assailed that work, and lias kept it up down to the present date. I trust it may not make this letter too long to mate several quotations. 1. The learned Sel Jen. says : "There, is no book eo translated as tho RiMc Tor the purpose. The Piblc is rather trans lated into English w-erils than into English plirase. Dr. Plackwoll tevtiiies.: ''Innumerable instances might be given of faulty transla tions of tb Divine Original." o. Dr. MelCntght, who has been called one of the ablest biblical critics that ever lived, fays of our version : "It is by no means such a just representation of tha in spired uriglu.il as merits to be implicitly re lied on fur determining the cunti-ovc: -ted ar ticle of the christian faith." C. John We.-Ie-.y ma le seventy-two chang es in one chapter "to m ike the sense br tier, clearer, stronger, or mort; ciasi-.te'.it with the context and nearer the original." 7. Dr. Clarko : "I run satisfied it stands much in need of revision." 8. The Foreign Piblc Society in its an imal report for lS'k) declares : "An amount of mi;ranslations might be presented which would give rise to the question, can such a ver-ioii be called the word of Cod." 0, Another Piblc Society in lSTit! publish ed to the world in its report that there woicburc! in our authorize! version 'nearly twenty four tho'.irand ei.-ors." The concurrent testimony of tiieite com petent witnessed taken from all evangelical j chtirchcs, c-tab!i..i;es the f.it-t that our trans lation, however cndvar.l t-j the betir's of the people it may be, is not at oil free from faults. Shall tinvc bo C '.-ivt-cd ? The re visers, noted for tin ir eminent seholar. hip, to which they have added ten years of spe cial .'tit.iy, answer this question in the af firmative ; and the weightiest presumption ia in their favor. Ignorance says no, and apper.ls to the cr!ierva'.ive prejudices of the people to hold fas! to that right or v. roiv: which has be-eotuc endeared to them. Put this is not always safe ; for age cannot sanc tify error, nor long eMr.tinc.cd endearment justify its ttse in place of truth.
