Thus, one by one. the Western States are moving in this great moral political question. The forces Uiat are back of the movement cannot be ig nored or despised, for they are those which spring from the highest needs of the people, who see their best interests threatened with destruction, their lives and fortunes on the brink of being sncraficed, and the whole fab rio of modern society shaken to its very centre. Quite a discovery in the treatment f diphtheria has been made recently, says the Muscatine Journal. A man whose arm had been amputated was attacked by diphtheria liefore the healing took place, and instead ef the matter in the throat, the greater portion apiieared ou the wounded ami, and the diphtheria was lightly and easily managed. Dr. Davis profited by this, and in his next case of diphtheria blistered bis patient's chest, and on this blistered part the chief deposit appeared. This was also an easy cure af the disease. The theory is that diph theria usually appears in the throat because of the thinness of the lining of the throat. Hence when the blister breaks the skin on the other psrt of the body the disease ap pears there. Bernhardt' sister. Mile. Jeanne Bern hardt, his arrived in New York. Mr. Orton was fairly, honeotly and squarely nominated, and should have been elect etl. The contents of the Xorth Ameienn lie- irw for March mast win the attention of all by the timeliness of the topics discussed. First, we have a thoughtful and moderate article by Bishop Coxc on "Theology in the Public Schools." The author would stern Iy exclude from the schoolroom all sectari an dogmas, whether Papist or Trotestant, but he insists on the retention of the Bible, first because that book is the prin cipal fountain of our English speech, and secondly becaue it is really the base of our social system. The second article is by Cap tain Eads, who endeavors to show the prac ticability of his ship-railway, its advantag es over all canal schemes, and why the Cnitcd States can without risk guarantee the payment of C-jier-ceiit. interest on $.V),- 000,000 of the capital stock of the proposed company. Jodgc H. II. Chalmers, writing on the "Effects of Negro Suffrage," bespeaks for the Southern States, while engaged with the solution of the great problem that has been forced upon them, the sympathy and counsel of the North. The other articles are "The Free-School System," by John P. Philbrick, being reply to the recent stric tures of Mr. Richard Grant White on the public schools ; "Thcolegical Charlantism," by Mr. John Fiske. whose typical theological charlatan is Mr. Joseph Cook ; and, finally, a review of some reecnt publications in Physics, by Trof. A. W. Wright. Stostycreek, Pa., Feb. 19, 1SS1. Eiutor Herald : In reply to Stonycreek's letter in last week's Meyersdale Commercial we will simply say that he missed the mark. We did not abuse anybody for not dancing to the editor of the Herald's whis tle ; neither do we consider the two per sons whose political history we have inquir ed into as the "Republicans in Somerset," they are only two of them, that is all. e have never said anything about Mr. Ogle's uprightness nor his ability ; that is not the question, We gave it as our opinion that he "sprang to his feet" prematurely, and subsequent events have confirmed us in oar opinion. We never said it was a crime in the Kooscr's holding office. Nobody doubts Mr. Curtis Kooscr's industry, sobriety, and skill as a mechanic. e accord tr. t. Kooe er, Esq., great credit for what he has done for himself against adverse circumstances. Now, Mr. Stonycrceker, if you take a second thought yon will see that all thi has no more to do with the question at issue, than the first book of Genesis. The very fact that the people have elected F. J. Kooscr to of fice, and thus highly honored him, is the best reason in the world that he should re main true to the usages of the party. Mr. Kooscr was elected to these offices before the "machine" was broken, which epoch in the political history of Somerset county hap jiened, according to the Meyersdale Commrr- ei-.il, January-", 1SS1. Since Mr. Kooscr was successful under machine rale, what docs he expect now ? But Mr. Stonycrcek er is in favor of refnrin, tiiat is, he is in fa vor of kicking the Sculls out of office, and putting somebody else in, which is the av erage "iKilter's" idea of reform. A few words in a general way about the late Republican meeting. This meeting gave opportunity to a faction in the jiarty, called ."bolters," of whom Gen. A. 11. Koontt is the animating and controlling spirit, to vent their spleen upon their jioliti- cal enemies ; and some of them so far forgot the instincts of the true gentlemen as to in dulge in pmrmal assaults upon thcirpoWiea adversaries. If General Koontx exjiccts, through his tools, to use the Republican party of Somerset county as an instrument by which to punish his political and person al enemies in the state and county , he will find himself mistaken. It is well known that he has been playing the part of the reformer for several years.dt- claiming boisterously against machine rule, and most piteously imploring the people to r'e in their might and smash the accursed instrument by which he has been kept out of office. He has worked himself up to that pitch of nervous excitment whereby he is enabled to see a "boss," uorns ana an, in every fence corner, and hears the sound of the "machine" dictating caucus nomina tions in the gentle sighing of the wind. His echoers, likewise, arc in constant dread of the dictator with the ft-epter in his hand. Now, what is the true inwardness of all this T We think tue wnoie story is uiiu, in its simplest form, when we say that the Gen eral U mad at Don Cameron and John Cessna. His wrath may be well founded for aucht we know. The snubs which he has received at their hands may have wounded his pride, but these are matter with which the party iu the county has nothing to do. We venture to say that the h In this county cannot oe misieti, i - .. , i . .v . r though the aileroi oe maae iu mc .- v. Investigation has resulted in the informa tion that a nnmber of the poor houses of Xew York are filled with able-bodied tramps. This is no new thing. The majority of the poor houses and jails of Pennsylvania arc in habited by the same class of vagabonds, who hare made it a system to find shelter in snch institutions. The condition is ono which grows out of this system of keeping paupers and criminals in idlenoss. There is a false notion that working criminals in a county jail is an Insult, and an injnry to the honest labor, encroaching on it in competition. This is a mistake, in that no labor which is made self supporting is an injnry to any industry. Thecriminal who, while undergoing pun ishment, is not productive, and isaconsum- er at the expense of the community, is an injury to every class of labor, a burden which ought not to be Imposed on any peo ple. It is said that the first settlers of a new caunty are very free and easy in their manners; and froili what we can learn the western part of North America is an illustration of this devil may care, (or as the French cnll it "ion dialance') part of on r natural charact er istic, and it may be possible that the go-abeadednej-'s 'of our people in making and improving their country Ls only the out prop that appeals to the eye of our every day feelings while a deeper sentiment has not yet manifested itself among us. Wo have no doubt that in early timci our ancestors were just ns free and easy as our Western brethren are to-'day, and it may be possible that we may get back to the habit and manners of our ancestors of abundrcd years ago. We are led to think it possible, because yesterday we inadvertently saun tered into one of our dry good stores that docs a deal of business, which was some whutcrowded at the time and we saw two young men from the country who had seat ed themselves on two empty boxes, taking one of the lids on their laps, between them anT were playing old sledge with as much complacency as if they were in church and waiting Pir the minister to announccthe text.
