Every Republican ought to Uke a paper published at the county seat ; our friends will greatly aid the cause by assisting us to increase the circulation of the Herald. Neutral and independent papers will not be in demand during the next year, espec ially among Republicans, a they are gen erally tails to the Democratic kite. Every active Republican should see the import ance of having a sound Republican paper in every household in the county where there is a chance of making or strengthen ing a Republican voter. The discussion ot the questions which will enter into Con gress w ill very soon assume prominence, and the earlier voters are educated in them the stronger will be the Republican party This, then, is the time to work ; and we hope during the course ot the next month to see the Herald' subscription aug mented by several hundred. ii an r.,..nc -,.i n.u win itinat pvrv w lboking right v uiv-ur- uwl IUICI IHI I J - ' - - - " . Judas was one of Christ's followers, and betrayed his master through wickedness and a desire for worldly gain by saluting Him with a kiss an evidence of iriendship aud sincerity. Such is the disposition aud conceit of people to day who would ma liciously and publicly vility the character if their in id later tor condeuiniug the uni versal and unchristian practice ol Sunday visaing, und lor preaching lsible truths ; their depraved natures and guilty con sciences cannot withstand this, and while they are making a pretense of rcliiiion they are really in the service of satan. It is not tor us to dictate the duties of a minister, neither do we wish to denne the limits ot the liberties of church, ruembtrs; but we are inclined to believe that the minister should be the moral and religious instructor and not the members of the church ; and if the preaching aud publish ing a sermon condemning aa evil practice are wroug, we ask what are the duties of a minister r Is it consistent with Chris tianity for church members and would-be Christians to criticise aud condemn their minister for pulling forth his christian ef forts to abolish a pernicious habit. We have no doubt but that the duties of the minister are numerous and various, but is he supposed to be versed in the science ot psychological juggk-ry that he may be able to read the evil designs of the mind und unmask the wickedness of the heart. It is ignorance imposing on common sense to presume that tue minister is capable ot perceiving the wickedness of thu human heart, and straightening it up for coui muuion services, as the hireling, lLjour tilte, and his illiterate assistants imagines, and were this required o! him, il wou.d be absolutely necessary lor him to engage the services of the whole Somerset county conference to straighten up the members of his present place of residence lor the sacred communion, and then there rniuLt possiuly he some "ulucu sheep among them. Is is possible that iutcilig'.-ut aud refined IH-Tsous require this? People who teach their smallest children all Kinds of vulgarity and profanity, call their daugh ters prostitutes, and still encourage them in trampling ujou the sacred rites ot God's law, claim to be refined ! We are confi dent that the assertions ina'le in several articles previously published in the lita- ALi),by thsCorresjKmilaat, "Ho vir.-vilie, are not the sentiments pfthe whole vil lage, as he claims by his si'.'aature, and there are still sotue citizens iuliiattown who have respect and reverence for a min ister, whose enure eflorts are for the ad vancement ol Christianity and ihi promo tion ot the ebnrch. We alto believe it to be the duty ol tfie dilL-rcnl congregations comprising his charge, to protect him from the vile tongue ot siander, aad to encour age him in his sacred profession. Have they not already had sutlicient evidence ol the persecution of their fjrmer ministers at that place to induce t'ucm to change tha location ol their pusoaairc. In conclu sion we would refer Hooversville und his cnllragues U tha pwrul . and fc.til apjilica lion ot tne contents ot the a.i charter of 2d Timothy ; more particularly from the Oth to the ICth verses. Wandering thro' the United States section ot this truly wonderful Exhibition, byperornainented aud over-displayed as the most of it is, I came upon an elegant glas case, whose modesty was the more conspicuous from its neighbors' finery, surmounted by th motto Dijnit J'rotmiu and displaying, in neat packages, the medical preparations of the house ot Dr. J. C. Ayer&Co., Low ell. Mass. I was aware of Hie world-wide reputa tion ol this eminent tJrm, for the character and quality ol their goods, and remember well tbeir agents in London, Measrs. New berry, in St Paul's Churchyard. Having a leia'ire hour, I determined to examine the contents ot this esse, myself, and I was surprised to see the delicate perfection to which they have brought their house hold remedies. I wns chagrined at the reflection that, while we have at home the most skillful and, pre eminently, the best physicians ia the world, these Yankee doc tors dis'ance us so tar in tbe line of popu lar medicines for family use. They have the sharpness to take advantage ot the hi 'h scientific discoveries amooir us and make pills and potions as palatable as they are salutary. I was told by a leading druz gist in "Philadelphia, that Dr. Ayer' man ufactory was the largeat in America, giv ing employ meet to hundred. I mustco to Lowell and see it, on my wav home. 1'orrepoMli nrc of He London, Ewjlind, T(Uj'ra.!i. Prrgramme (or the Swidy Hollow Liter ary Society, ot lirotbersvailpy townsnip, for Friday evening.
