We seldom see anything spokes of in your valuable pa per about Draketown. unless an accident occurs, or an affray, and such like ; we do not want your readers to think we are tbe most miserable and unlucky class of man kind. Draketown is situated three and a half miles north-west of Confluence, and has one of the best water powers ia the county, we might say in many counties. Drake run has been dammed and a supply of water led over an elevation of one hun dred leet, sufficient to run a wool lacturr, tannery, saw-mill and flour inilL The flour mill Is owned and operated by Thomas Ream of this place. We judge by tbe number of teams that are daily bringing io grain that be gives general sat isfaction. Mr. Keam manufactures a num ber one article of flour. Draketown at one time was the business centre ot Lower Turkey fox, but since the rai.road town sprung np our trade has been gradually leaving us. Mr. At run X tkWsm is building a new barn on bis farm near this place. Tbe readers of tbe Herald will remember that the old barn and the entire crop ot Mr. Nickleson wa consumed by fire a few months ago. The hunters made good use of their time during the season; quite a cumber ot deer were killed near this place. Thomas Ream, Esq., butchered three porkers that weighed, when dressed, 1200 pounds. Mr. Jacob Moon, while out gunning on the Hih of December, came up to within U a paces of a large deer; he drew up his can and fired; tbe barrel bursted, and tbe twlls came out between the breech and first sight and flew into the air. The stock was split into splinters and the lock hurled many yards oil'. The most singu lar part ot ii is that Mr. Moon escaped with only slight injuries. A protracted meeting has been in pro gress in our town for over three weeks past, conducted by Elder W. B. Long, viator in charge of Church of God. Zimmer man, and of Mary Ankeny, widow of Peter Ankeny, deceased, at the residence ot his son John, near Sioyutown, on Thanksgiving morning, November 38, 1878, betwen ten and eleven o'clock, at the advanced age of 80 years. 9 months and 19 days. Tbe deceased was born about one and a half miles west of Stoystown, February 9, 1798. As the Western fever, which tood awayimany a noble youth from Som erset's beautilul hills to the far, far West. never took hold ot him. be died almost in sight of his birth place. He loved his native county, and could never see why any one should leave a country that "flow ed with milk and honey, and had coal and sugar in the bargain.. "Her rocks and rills, her woods and templed bills" were especially lovely to bim in his latter days. He took great pleasure in relating tbe events that transpired in those days when the sound of the stage-horn made tbe val leys and forests ol Somerset ring w.ti mu sic. Judge Zimmerman, as he was most commonly known, was an nprigUt and just man; widely and well know n through out the county as an exceptionally kind and good man. He was a good host, knowing well how to entertain bis guests, and make them feel at home when under his care. He was a particular! v vigorous old man, ; and enjoyed excellent health all his life. He never was sick abed a day in his life, except the last day ot his earthly exist ence. He was still able to read the Som erset Herald, the Reformed church -l-unrjer, (in whose weekly visits he delight ed) and the many books that filled his li brary, without the use of spectacles. Un like many octogenarians be traveled about a great deal, tt always anorded him great pleasure to show the hills and moun tains ot Somerset to strangeis. Seldom would he confine himself to the house. When the great Centennial was in lull blast, and thousands were paying their tribute to America's greatest exhibition, he, in his 79th year, was among the vast multitudes. Early on a rainy Monday morning he passed through Stoystown, ar riving in the city on Tuesday evening. While in the city he visited the Centenni al grounds every day but one, and appa rently took as deep interest in seeing the grand display as any sight-seer of young er years. On Pennsylvania's day be re marked, "We must go and make it the greatest ol all days. We will beat Xew York;" and he remained on the grounds and witnessed the fire woiks, returning home to bis boarding place at 12:15 a. m. Though not a politician, he figured quite prominently in his day In public life. The offices of trust that had been committed to bis care were faithfully dis charged, in W-ii, (though this date is in dispute), in nis mirty lourth year, be was chosen County Commissioner. In U) Quemaheming township elected him Just ice of the Peace for the first time. Hav ing been found failhtul, be was elected to fill the same office twice afterward. In 1854 53. The most important office held by nun was that ol Assemblyman, and in w hich he performed the most important work of his lite lor better or worse, lutu rily will disclose. To this office he was elected October 8, 1S41. It was during tbe winter ot 1843 that the State Legisla ture vainly ballotted 1 times for L. S. Senator. The candidates were Wood ward, Cameron, and Cooper. Thirty-one times did Mr. Zimmerman vote lor Cooper. On the 32d ballot he kept tally; and his name being last on tbe roll, he changed his vote from Cooper to Cameron. Thus all that the Camerons probably are t-day, is due to Mr. Zimmerman. The last office held bv him was that of Associate Judee, to which be was elected October 14, lSOO. He bad been a life long member of the Iletormed church; baplizi in infancy, and confirmed in his 13th year by Rev. Giesy, ot blessed memory. In the church as well as in the state be figured quite prominent ly. At the age ot 24 he was elected dea con, and ten years later he was elected to the eldership. For many years he was the standing delegate to the Claris and Synods of the church. Thus has one more of Somerset's noble citizens gone to his Tesu His remains lie in the Odd Fellows' Cemetery, at Stoys town. For a period ot more than half a centu ry that he was a full communicant mem ber ot the church he never was absent from the Communion. What an exam ple! What a comfort to his children and grand-children! J. II. B. Stoystows, Dec 20, 1879. Dos'tGivk cp thk Snip." When these words were spoken by our lamented Lawrence, it must have been a solemn time for those on board, and probably not a dry eye among them, seeing tbeir com mander mortally wounded, and still giv ing orders like the above ; but not more solemn than when the family physician in tonus you that some one of your family has an affection ot the lungs which ii neg lected, will eventually terminate ia Con sumption. Dickey, Register and Recorder of this county, grows rapidly io public favor wherever it is introduced ; it certainly is one of tbe best systems ever adopted by any county. The longer it ia used the mora it ia liked and appreciated by our attorneys. A cor respondent of the Pittsburgh Commercial Gazette writing from Kittaning Armstrong County, says : . An entire new set of ad tectum and di ed indices is to be furnished in tbe office ot tbe Recorder of Deeds of Armstrong county. The old books had grown very cumbersome and nnwleldly, as an attor ney was forced, in looking for any con veyance by deed, to look through a list of ail tbe grantors whose surnames bore the same initial letter. This bad grown to be a great labor, and a committee was ap pointed to select some new system. The committee reported in favor of the "Dick ey 8ystem" of indexing, which report was adopted by the Court, and the committee ordered to obtain the necessary indices. a ad see to having the work done.
