and as many as could restrain from la'igh

The candidate was then led from the
stand only to appear a minute lat'-r on the

We arrived at Somerset on Thursday
evening at 6:30, and stopped at the Somer
set House, owned and kept by Mrs. Flick.
Her son, Mr. Georce Taymin, superin
tends thu Imjusu, and ho is just the right
man in the right place. There are but
two ho'.els iu Somerset; the Somerset
House and the Glade House. The Glade
House is the one which our fellow-towns-man

House, its style, its furniture, i!s rooms,

House. If n were not for the advantages
ot liedford water, we would never go far
ther than the Somerset House, it we want
ed to spend a few weeks in a pure almos
phere, ia a pleasant, live town, among a
social and intelligent people.
Wc were astonished to learn that Som
erset has a greater altitude than Cresson.
There are about forty boarders at the Som
erset House, besides tbe transient custom
ers. If any of our readers want to spend
a tew days or a few weeks in a nice, gen
teel town, and have the best kind ot ac
commodations, we would advise them to
go to Somerset and slop at the Sooierst
House.

too much for human nature to bear; the
crowd yelled in derision, and a flight of
rotten eggs ascended in such a direct line
for the orator that he was fain to Lcat a
hasty retreat- Thus ended the Greenback
meeting; it was a story in four chapters
more chapters, perhaps, than Mostoller
will have votes. Now the conference
should be held, the child named, and then
"bury it under the roses."
Mr. Herman S'.ahl. w ho was placed on
l he ticket cf the Hollers, as a delegate
from Somerset township, called on us, and
authorized u to suite that he declined
niofet positively, the morning of the elec
tion, to run as a delegate, and that he was
not at any time iu sympathy with the
movement.
Mr. Stahl has always borne the repu'a
tion ol an honest, upright man; was a
good soldier during the war, has always
been an earnest, hard working party man,
and is the only Republican in a family of
nine. I he ltollern must hunt up weaker
ltcpublicaus for their delegates. Men of
such sterling worth as Mr. S. will not an
swer their purpose.
Among the premiums olTerud by the
Agricultural Society is one toi the best
horsemanship, and our girls have gone in
to training already. Sometime, when
horses are scarce, two of them mount the
same horse; at least that was tbe case on
last Friday. Both were Main street girls,
aud the one sported a nobby ridiag habit,
while the other was "rigged out" ia a
short dress, long apron, and aun bonnet
They presented a handsome appearance,
and, as Miss S. said, "enjoyed1 it re much,
if only Ned Scull dou't see us and put an
article in the Herald."

young man of talent, and graduated in a
manner alike creditable to Lis Inerxls and

pleased to say, stood well in their classes.
Mr. Charles CofTroth was so unfortun
ate as to be thrown from his horse while
returning from campmeeling on Sunday
hist. The horse shiod and the saddle girtli
broke, throwing Mr. C. violently to tbe
ground. A gash several inches long and
perhu two inches deep was cut in his
right hip, and he was otherwise cut and
bruised. Di. Henry Brtibker was called
in and dressed tbe wotiud.

new building al the north-wesu-rn end of
town, which will add much to the appear
ance of our little village.
Messrs. Kaulz & Son have built au ad
dition lo ibeir wagou manutaeluring shop,
and are now ready to do work in that line
of business for all who may give them a

Mr. Jacob Kaulz, ot the firm of Kaulz
& Son, has built himself a very handsome
cage; in tact, it will be the iiueat dwelling
house in town, when finished.
Mr. Bianset has erected a two-stoiy
shop, and is now ready to manufacture all
kinds of furniture.
The boys ot the newly organized band
ot our town are occasionally giving us
Iheir beat, aud we think they can con
gratulate themselves on account ot their

The farmers of our vicinity are about
doue harvesting, and will toon begin again

Baker had abdicated bis position as nor

day afternoon.

discussed by Kev. J. G. Sleiucr, of Alle
gheny City, and olucrs.
Thursday evening Uev. J. S. Slil'er,
ot Xew Florence, Pa , discussed The In
fluence of Sunday-schools. Others made
remarks upon this subject. The discus
sions were interesting, being instructive
and spirited.
There has been marked progress made
npon the District in this good work dur
ing the year, the reports indicate lhat
the schools generally aie in a healty condi
tion.
The Convention was highly entertained
with music by Prof. W. H. Holmes, of
Grecnsburg, Pa., who was assistedby
many cf the delegates and others.
The exercises ot tbo Convention were
interesting and proti'ab'e, and largely at
tended. God was iu our midst, and we
kit that it w as gj:4 for us to be there

The President, directors and citizens of
Cumberland, from what we learn, are de
termined to make lue Agricultural aud
Mechanical Fair, to be held in that city in
October, a success; and why should it not
be so 7 l ue commercial aud manufactur
ing relations of that city to the surround
ing counties make it a centre of impor
tance to all who have wares to sell, or
supplies to purchase; and the interest of
such would seem to indicate the second
town in the State, as a very desirable lo
cality. not only to hold a Fair, but the
point wbere the industrial classes in every
branch of business would be anxious to
meet for the purpose of exchanging views.

fleeting man feels the necessity of availing
himself of all his own, and the skill of
others, that he may tr.rn it to a profitable
account. We are informed lhat besides
the usual attractions of these exhibitions,

duced tor the amusement aud instruction
of the patrons of this Fair. No pains or
means will be spared to make it the most
attractive exhibitson of the kind ever held
in Western Maryland.
The address, it is said, will be delivered
by the liev. Henry Ward Beecher, a sen-
tleruan whose distinguished ability never
fails to draw immense crowds to listen to
his extraordinary powers as a speaker.
