He cauaol but con trast in his mind, w hat is and w hat might be. It would I a positive ret and pleas ure to the eye to view this tow n w ith its promiuent situation, if Ihe buildings were painted in subdued but tasteful shades. It might be made a beautiful place in deed, if the glaring, heated brick blocks were toned down. Mr. Baer's block pre sents a fine appearance, and looks as though it had a right to lie here and was at home. The Mammoth block, on the other hand, looks as though it had been trans planted fruut some mush -room oil district, and hail not become acclimatized. The same thing may be said of the ex terior of our hotels. "Di; the proprietors expect their guests to lie deprived of all xsthetic sense t They forget thai there is an apietite for the beautiful, the ti-ilhetic, and the taste lu I, which, with enlicLted and culti vated persous, must be satisfied with as much regularity as the cravings of their animal nature. Their houses would be a hundred times more attractive if they were tastefully painted. Another thing for w hich there is not a particle of excuse, is the black, ugly, weather-stained appearance of many o! the fences and out-houses about town properties. If these out houses and fences arc too poor to be painted, they should at least be while-washed. White-wash is cheap, and an annual ap plication would add greatly to the gen eral appearance of the town. We think the following demonstrates the desirability of attractive homes: "There is u.e in beauty. It makes home attractive, its exterior more respect able, our lives happier, our dispositions sweeter, aud our social and domestic in tercourse more refined. By all means plant some lillle thing of grace to temper the rugged surroundings of the front yard. Its siilent. though elegant language will speak to the visitor or passer-by a word of eulogy for you. The least flow'er or shrub will lie some attraction; a curved path winding between trees to the house, a mound of stoues aud shells, with the ivy trailing over them, the tlowcring shrub or turf of fern, all such things are attractive, and form a ple;ising subject lor the eye of even the most indillereut bcholded." We have not learned whether there was any in surance ou the building. The tlogs made sad liavock with Joseph IlhoaJs' flock of sheep a few nights ago. We were informed seventeen were killed and mutilated by the dogs. Those will be expensive dogs to the owners, ns Joe is determined to make the owners remuner ate him for his loss. As the end comcth, it waxeth warm lor the candidate, who may be seen most any time on our streets,, very solicitous for your vote. Editor IIekai.d. I noticed in your tost week's issue an article about the rude ness of some of our neighbors at Hoovcrs ville, and Ihe low, mean, dirty tricks that they are doing; such as writing anon ymous letters, stealing Ihe Bible and lamps out of the Reformed church, etc It is true we have bad characters here as well as elsewhere; they are all over the world, aud will conliaue to be so in all time to come. There were anonymous letters written and sent to several of our citizens, but were they written in the village cr near it, or somewhere else, and sent here 1 is a question beyond my comprehension, though certain parties have been blamed. But 1 think these parties are innocent of it, for they are zealous, working ChrisT liau men aud women, and they would not stoop so low as to speak evil of their n.-ighbors and friends. I think the writer did not look sharp while in church on the 11th of April, or he would have seen the lamps; or, he was misiiilornied by parlies there, which, I cannot say; but the lamps were positively not m ved from their places. He also slated that the Reforms had no church, w hu h is not true. Now the church is not a Reluimed church altogether, it a lie lomied and Lutheran church together. The Lutheran's at their own expense iMitighl the Bible and the lamps, one Lutheran member buying the Bible hiiu sell and presenting it to the Lutheran church. Aud when reflecting over the subject, it would have not been more than right to remove the lamps and Bible. 1 would not have written on the sub ject at all, but owing to the false reports therein recorded, putting us down to the very bottom of the pit ot degradation. I believe we have just as good people here as auy where on the globe. Outsider. Hooveilsvii.i.e, Pa., April 2G, PCS. Dr. Van Dvkk's Sit riicuSoAP. I Medic inc A Science ? A general ly understood, science consists in deduc ing facts from theory, und the mathemati cian requires a knowledge ot one factor in order to determine Uie value of unknown factors, so medicine, when practiced as a science, demands a knowledge ot one or more facts, upon w hich to base its calcu lations. Understood and practiced in this way, the blunders of guess-work are avoided. In preparing his now popular Family Medicines, R. V. Pierce, 31. D., o! Buffulo. N. Y., devoted much time to the careful investigation of the several classes of diseases for which his remedies are prescribed as specifics. Their unpar-, alleicd success attest, in arguments strong j er than words, the Doctor skill. For ton of small population, we have more tine buil lines than cculj be expected. We have three good churches, an elegant school building, and one of the tini'st Ho tel buildings between Pittsburgh and Cumberland. We have a very haudsomc brick block, with beautiful residences and tasteful grouuds, some three or lour dry goods stores, end as many gre relies, three very fashionable milliner and dress maker establishments, two fit st class blacksmiths, and a barber, dentist and tailor, com bined. Notw ithstanding the dull limes the town has been constantly improving. Among the other evidences of public spirit in I'r- sina, may be mentioned that alforded by a park or open square, which has not vet been wholly completed, but is a good re sort on a summer evening. A pleasant feature of file here (luring the warm weather is the fresh, cooling breeze of the soil, summer winds const.iaily drawing up the creek, and bringing the fragrance of sweet-smelling flowers, ihe birds sing wry sweetly here; we catch the gentle music of their voices just as the mormug sun is breaking through the gold and sil ver clouds. But we must leave this item and hasten to another. A select school is in progress here, be ing taught by I'rot. Cook, who is a predes- sional teacher, and knows well how to im press upon the young minds the value of an education. Jiiss scueil, of Somerset, is teaching a music class at this place with abundant success. Itev. Hickman, our pastor, meets with us at the Methodist church every Thurs day evening nt prayer meeting. She was the daughter of Daniel Augustine, and in her early home she had all the advantages that refined affection and generous wealth could bestow. These she improved to the development of mind and heart, and by her amiable disposition endeared herself to all around her. There are few persons, indeed, that have been more generally be loved. At the time ot her decease her father and two brothers were absent from home. The former did not receive the sad news till the day of the funeral. To all the family it was truly a heart-rending message. Not very long before. Miss Period, another daughter, had died, and now the cup ot bitterness was again to be drained. But what words can express the sorrow that mourns -over the loved and lost. When we remember Alcinda, w ho was so kind in her manners, so innocent in all her ways, we cannot but think w ith one of Scotland's poets : 'I lor soul toj soft lta ille to bcir Has let', our m-irtal hemisphere, And s.micht In better world the meed To Mamelcs; lire liy Heaven decreed." Among the antecedents of disease are in ertness in the circulation of the blood, an unnatural attenuated condition of the physique, indicating that the lite current is deficient in nutritive properties, a wan, haggard look, inability to digest the food, loss of appetite, sleep aud strength, and a sensation of unnatural languor. All these may be regarded as among the indicia of approaching disense.which will eventually attack the system and overwhelm it, il it is not built up and fortified in advance.
