To weeks sgu ws mtqliooed the novel method ot punishment imposed on some fallen women by the Mayor of Park er City. The erring females coming be- I ore ji()qor on tne Lor(T day, and be- ing unable to pay the heavy fine Imposed, they were ordered to attend hunuay school in the alternoon. They presented themselves, and wete taken charge of by his Honor, who adapted a scriptual lesson to their situation. As the report goes tbeir conduct was very seemly during their at tendance. The tbllowing week the rieii ly righteous ladies of Ibe school met and concluded that the Mayor's action was a grievous and unpardonable insult against their holy lives. They directed their minister to inform the Mayor that it again he ordered fallen creatures to the Sunday school they and his Honor would both be (brown out Last Sunday at the opening of the school the Mayor said be had some remarks to make, lit read first the story of the wedding feast, and direcud particu lar attention to a portion where lbs serv ants were enjoined to go into tbe high -w sy and In way and gather ia the good and bad. After this followed tbe story of the woman taken in adultery and brought before Christ for condemnation. I ne Mayor then spoke of the message be had received, '(caching in his pocket he ' drew out a small stone which be beld be- ,- . t i a ........ iween 141 tnuinu aim uuger. uiruvio bis he-id. and Said; "Let her that w w ithout sin among you cast at these poor women this none, and," drawing out another and holding it up in the other hand, "and here is one to cast at me, for like thise two poor unfortunates. His Honor stood for a few nionien's silent with outstretched arrQS, and his face bright with emotion, ss he darted bis keen glances inquiringly here and there over the assembly. Oil Editor II krald Considerable anxie ty is tell here to know wbat more, if any thing, will be done by the Chairman ot the Republican County Committee to prevent weak-kneed or unscrupulous Committee men trora accepting and counting the votes of Democrats at tbe ltepubliean primary election, as it is said that quite a number ol them intend, and have made arrange ments, to do. At first "a cloud nc larger than a man's hand," "a little acorn," this disgraceful practice, growing every year, has assumed threatening proportions,'! and is now a very "large oak. Some thing should be done to preserve, or rath er restore tbe purity of our primary elec tion ballot boxes, or they cease to be ex pressions ot party preference, and are not entitled to party allegiance. e, tbe common soldiery, tbe men of the musket, have been most grievously sinned against and imposed upon by our would be ofil cials ot the past Sundry politicians. small beaded and hearted fellows, "smsrl Alicks," aspirants tor office, and their bench men, have, in the not very "lang svne, too, been guilty of some disgrace ;u ly "fantastic tricks before high heaven," and tbe Republican party ol Somerset ounty. We have been sold several times tor much less than the traditional "mess ot pottage." And while we are disposed to let by--ones be by-gonis, "to forgive and forget," we don't intend to have any more "I'ooiin' 'round dar. " with impunity, in tbe future. "Dinna ye hear the slogan T it is as yet only a whisper, but il is in the air, and il means some thing more, perhaps, than if more "thunder of the captains and shoutings." It migbl be as well to say right here, that the writer has not been, is not now, and never intends to be a candidate for any office; be is not a "sole-bead," nor has he any ax, or even a little hatchet, present or prospective, to grind. Also that he is not writing in the interest, or at tbe suggestion of any candidate, or to in jure, by attempting to weaken, the claims of any ol the very many courteous gentle men trom among whom we, it is to be hoped, are to have tbe privilege of choos ing color sergeants for our little skirmish with the outside barbarians next falL but he thinks, w ith many others, that we should have a fair, square deal. Rascality in our primary elections should be in continently stamped out this unprinci pled treason to tbe party made oduras, as odious as treason to the country used to be, and the perpetrator, "whale 'er bis nsme or age or station," by all decent, honorable men, anatluma. And though - Brother Beecbcr, Canon Farrar and some other sensational theologians have, 'lis said, "weakened," somewhat on the orthodox belief in the severity and duration of the future state ol punishment, he may, per chance, try to plaster his soul with tbe de lusive though "flattering unction" tbst there is only a little "unpleasantness" awaiting him on the other side of tbe Styx, be should be taught that in this country there is a political and social, "outer darkness" for tbe man whose con science, with such base injustice to bis party and to his competitors, is corrupted. Everything's not lair in war or "politics; and honesty is tbe best policy, even if un successful. For there are some "damned spots that will not 4oot, and some ghastly "ghost that will not "down, at the high behest of e'en proud wear ers ot the purple and fine linen." 1 be sentiment here is, and always has been, for RipMiciih primary elections; aad our Committeeman, we are happy to say, has "the particles of atony matter" commonly known as "sand," and has il bad, too. None but Republicans have been, or will be allowed to rote at these polls, mark that; aud none more than once. They can if, they wish, "vote early," but cannot "vote often." We are rel-gious'y oppised to the auicklsl prac tice ol stuffing t allot boxts with the votes of doga, dead men, non-residents, repeat er i, aid D.-mt c ats. We think no returns stiould be accepted except under oath, and furiher, that all candidates receiving the greatest and nominating number, of votes should be compelled to "most solemnly swear that none bad been bv themselves, or to tbe best of their knowl.-dge and be lief their friends lor them, bought, stolen, whitewashed, or manufactured. And we really believe that a great majority of tbe Republican voters ot Somerset county are with as in our hnmble but most earn est appeal to the Chairman of the Repub lican County Committee tor thia "bare bodkin.-' Xebec. Your Pleasant Purgativd Pellets have cured my wife after our best physicians bad tailed. They helped her from the first dose. Ira A. Miller. Very few, perhaps, of our readers are strangers to the popular dry goods estab lishment of Straw bridge & Clothier, Philadelphia, but only those who have visited their store within the past tew weeks can form any idea ot the immense assortment, now on exhibition, of those unique French novelties in dress textures, which of late have become so fashiona ble. Forseeing the great demand for these goods, a member of tbe firm visited the manufacturing centres of France and per sonally selected the choicest styles, many ot which are confined to themselves and are shown nowhere else in this country. I he cheaper laurics, mis nrm now, as heretofore, are dis'.ributiog to their cus tomers at the same price per Tard as the country merchant pays lor the Identical goods by tbe case. Every department ol tbe bouse- is con ducted on tbe principle ot delivering goods to the people at one small uniform profit above the cost ot production. W e would remind our lady readers who cannot spare the time to visit Eighth and Market streets in person, to avail ttem- t elves of this firm's original system of "shopping by mail, which gives tbe most di-ttanl customer as nearly as possible all tbe advantages of tbe Philadelphia rest dent. The last article that was removed was the crib, containing an infant baby, and tbe cries and lamentations ot tbe moUier and chil dren were anything but pleasant to those around. Mr. Mostoller's case seems to be an un paralleled one. Ten years ago Mr. Mos toller could gaze over the broad and thrif ty fields of one of the finest farms in this section of the county, and siy, "I am mon arch of all I survey." lie had a fine stock of horses and cattle, all the latest im proved machinery and implements of a well to do and independent farmer, and floating gently down upon tbe stream ol wealth and affluence.
