Wilh each re turning season number of commission merchants, trom Baltimore and Philadel phia, would visit the county to solicit shipments of butter on commission, fre quently giving promises of quick Sales which were not realized, ana in some cases no returns were received until the end of the season, and then at a very low figure in many cases the amounts re ceived were absolutely ruinous. Anoth er of the evils endured was the enormous charge of freight by the railroad company. The charges by freight were raised so that the cost from Somerset to Baltimore last season was fully one dollar per hundred pounds, while the freight on the same class of goods from Baltimore to Somer set is not more than one third that amount While the county (one of the best dairy counties in the world), labored under such disadvantages that the business has been very much crippled, and farmers have to some extent turned their attention to oth er products, none of which, however, are as certain and as profitable as the dairy. when a good price is obtained for the milk. These things became the subject ot conversation among the farmers, rub- lic meetings were called and the subject was fully discussed; committees were ap pointed to take action and make report. The result ol these efforts, on the part of many ot the most intelligent farmers of this riciniaty, was the visit to this county of Sage & Barrel, of New York State, and their consent to erect creameries here. The firm of Sage. Burrell & Co., is a prosperous firm having at present thirty one lactones in the State of New York, and they also have a factory making cheese boxes in Michigan, where over one-half the cheese boxes used in the United Stales are made. They possess the advantage ot making sales of their own dairy products, and, as they manu facture none but first-class goods, they ob tain fancy prices. Possessing all these advantages they can afford to pay the highest prices for milk, and consequently the smaller dealers in their neighborhood have disposed of their factories to thein and are now working for Sage, Burrell & Co. These gentlemen come here to us and offer to the iarmers of Somerset county the same prices for their milk that they pay at their home in New York. Their offer is a very liberal one, and every farmer from Gebharts to Jenner X Itoads should lend his aid, and speak a kind trord of thttr in their behalf. Some farmers may be so situated that it is not convenient for them to haul their milk the present season, yet they can speak a trord oj tkeer lor Sage, Burrel fc Co. In a few years they will be looked upon as public benefactors, having abated a nui sance in the shape of commission agents. and paying the people such price for their milk that Somerset county will take a mint rank among tne counties ot w estern Pennsylvania.
