During the past week efforts have been made to secure the requisite number of coas for the purpose of establishing creameries aue cneese lac tories in several localities. An effort is also being made in the southern part of tjuemahoning town ship ia the peighborhood of Val. J. Mil ler's. Jeunur not heard from. Farmers and dairymen, do accept the evidence that the buyer's standard of ec ce lie nee is all the time rising ; and the grade of butter, which only a few years ago commanded the highest price in the market will not do so now; and the veri table result is, that dairymen who do not pros lorward all the time must fall be hind. The time has gone by when those who made poor or iadillt-rept produce can, as In the past, put it on the market at (he same prk as the better goods of their neighbors, and those who are unwilling to improve their pro.lucts and make them fit to co on the market at paying priees are being pushed to the wall. However, it is not an easy matter to locate the lacto nes so as to make sufllcicntly convenient for the requisite number of cows, as the farmers have partly stocked their farms with young cattle, sheep and horses. During the present week, however, it is thought the arrangements for at least two factories will be made. K. M. Scmtocii, Chui. of Com. Death, the king of terror, has invaded our quiet rural village, and laid his cold and icy hand upon one or our oldest citizens, lather Gabriel Walker, who was the found er ol tbe village ot t riedensburg. It was here that M r. Walker speut his boyhood days, and from youth to old age, this was his place of ab xle. None knew him but to hive and esteem him for bis kindness and hospitality. And on Sunday February 1 1. lie was loiioweu by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives to tbe silent city of the dead, there to behold his earthly remains consigned to the narrow confines of the tomb, along side ot his ami able w ile w ho bad preceded him about six years in passing through the valley of the shadow ot death. Father Walker was a lite long member of the Lutheran Church at this place and held the office of Elder at the time of his death, his sickness was but brief, and he bore all his afflictions with meekness, Christiau tortitude and resignation, and died in the triumph of faith. He had ful filled the measure of his days, and even more than the allotted time of three score years and ten, havine departed this lite at the good old age ot 73 years and 3 months. Thus in the death ot father Walker, the church has ht a consistent and a taithlul member, the community highly esteemed citizen, and the lamily kind and indulgent father.' Such Is the animosit, against them thai they are misrepresent ed, and in a manner discouraged, even ia such an important matter as religion. They have one christian church here. and several in San Francisco, where tbey meet every Sunday night to worship the true God. in the same manner as other christians. It was condacted entirely by Chi nese. The singing was in English; "Pass me not" "Hold the Fort" and several other familiar hymns were very well sung, and performed remarkably well on tbe organ. Thinking, perhaps, that a tew items from tbe "Somerset Coun tv Colonization Society" would be of in terest to tbe readers of your valuable pa per, weiubmit the following: After Icavinc Somerset nothing vprthy of note occurred until within few miles of Grafton, Virginia, where J. At Uratton, irginia, Mr. Barkmsn and his fair bride bid lis fare well. After leaving Grafton nothing fur ther happened to mar the pleasure of our trip, until our arrival at North Vernon, Indiana, where tbe conductor sang out, "Ten minutes for refreshments." F. A. Smith and A. C. Benford, taking adzant- aee of the time, crossed the street to a Drue store to procure some medicine, and w hile the druggist was compounding it the train moved oil, leaving them behind Their dUappintment can better be imag ined than described; and consequently they did not arrive at Sauna until alter our ar rival. After crossing the State line into Kansas, tbe eye was greeted on every side by Seautiful wheat fields and acres upon acres of the finest kind of corn, which yet remained to be busked. e were all de lighted with tbe charming country through which we passed; the broad and rolling prairie, doited over with neat and com fortable residences. Hundreds of fine, tat cattle, sheep and bogs were to be seen everywhere. We arrived at Salina, ourdestination.on Thursday night February 7, and through the kindness of J. F. Agler, the Kansas Pacific Railroad Agent we were mit to remain in tbe car until tbe next morn ing. We then moved into the Company's house, at this place, where we are com tortably quartered. Owing to the unusual amount ot rain which fell here we have as yet been unable to see much of the coun try, the roads being almost impassable. Salina, the county seat of Salina county, is a prosperous city, with a population of about twenty five hundred. It is beauti fully located on tbe Smoky Hill river, one hundred and eighty miles west of Kansas City, on the Kansas Pacific Rail road, and bids fair to be a great railr jad centre. They have at present nine church organizations, with good, comfortable church edifices, a school buikling which ct thirty thousand dollars, four large grain ele'vators, two flouring mills and one in process of erection, and quite a number of fine substantial business bouses, all of which are doing a thriving business. ' We quote a lew of the prices : Flour, $6 00 per bbl.; coflee, 22c to 25c per lb.; sugar, 9c to 14c; dried fruits. 10c to 14c; butler, 12c per lb.; eggs, 8c per doz., potatoes 75c per bus. ; beef steak, 7c to 10c per lb. ; veal, 5c to 10c; mutton, 5c to 12c; hams, 10c; lard, 7c; fresh pork, 5c to 8c Dry goods, notions, clothing, boots and shoe, hard ware, etc.. very cheap. Mechanics and laborers get good wages. In conclusion we will say, that we are well pleased with Kansas. Twenty years ago this was known- as tbe -'Great Amer can Desert" Today Kausat stands In the foreground, and is reoogn:ied and hon ored by virtue of what she has wrought under discouragements. She is now in her elory. Tbe shadows have passed; sunshine, prosperity and fullness flow with steady increasing tide. No country is more prosperous to-day man Kansas; they have more wealth at tbe East, but it s locked up in depressed realities and slocks. Trade, production. values, every thing have touched tbe maximum and are in shrink ing process, iterp me tendency is up ward, me coup try u young ana growing, trade U steadily expanding, production Is constantly inureasing, wealth to rapidly, but healthfully accumulating, with the development ot local resources. Kansas offers more to the emigrant to day than any other land between tbe two oceans. The climate is charming; tbe soft is for the moot part unexcelled; the variety and pos sibility ot production are wonderful; tbe schools are among the best; the society to good; the country J neaiiwui. and more beutiful than we can detcribe.
