Ta Ike t'ltlseaa af Mwuxrrset Vlrlally. 1 i On the tenth of August next. Prof. 1 Johnson proposes to commence giving a thorough aud systematic course of instruc tion in music and musical effects in this place. All are urged to attend this Nor mal Music School on account of the value and llioroughnchg of the instruction given, aud not tor any selfish reason. In a two weeks' course. Prof. Johuson will not only leach the whole of the art of reading music, in two, three or lour parts, as well as in one part, also the ability to bring out the voice iu a free unrestrained maimer like that ot tLe must self compos, ed public leuker. avoiding such habits as leauiug lor rd, twisting the neck, wak ing any motions whatever with the hands, head, bod) or feet, or doiug auj llnu eise Whicli causes lliu toues lo beciuie iiupuie or oltvusive lo the ear ; but he mill xl bring the class under such Coulrol that ! every motion m ill be made by every mem-1 la-r simultaneously aud alike. N4 only ia taut puucipie eutorced in all lliius uii served by other musicians, but also many other things, us for iu.unce all rata ing and silting precisely together and with out raising their eyes trom the book; this not ouly in full cherus, but also in semi. chorus, iu alternate choirs, in alternate choirs reversed and on a single note. Nor is the slightest negligence overlooked mhicb if countenanced will encourage carelessness in the pupils ; for instance the same exactness is enjoined in com in to order instaulty, in finding the pase by turning all the leaves at once and that without noise, and in hearing aud observ ing all orders tbe first lime they are given, as in those tbmgs pertaining more espe cially to tbe execution ol music. Iu addition to the above, it may be ot iuttrest to strangers to know thai Prot. Johnson plavs for his classes almost en tirely from memory, thereby giving his whole alter lion to the voices; that he plays any piece w ith perfect ease in any key best adapted to the cIicjs entirely dis regarding the key in which it is written that he is so perfectly familiar with his course as to go entirely through ith his lustructious without ever showing the slightest hesitation ; that he always gives his directions in a clear distinct loue of voice, thereby giving no cause lor reiealin them ; that he illustrates the wrong way as well as the right way of doing everything, thus making the right way imperative by tbe contrast : and that in the study ot no tation, he will teach all that necessarily belongs 'jo that study in half tbe time it is usually taught, and will also make it cor respondingly more plain and easily under stood by ail. l,et no one infer from the above that Prof. Johnson is coming to Somerset for the purpose of teaching tbe "show bust ness or operatic art ot singing : tbie de partment of the art f singing he will not teach even ft desired. 11 is only the natu ral and useful art that will be taught, such as that practiced by Sankey, who learned all be ever acquired oQ music and musical effects at two or three of Prof. Johnson's convenlioiis. The ability of Ihe Prolessor tod.i all we claim for hint, can only be fully realiztd bv witnessing his um-qualed knomietlge ol the art ot teaeliin I his all are now aide to do lor a sm.ill sum, and llioi-e m ho do uotavail themselves of this option unity mill Hint ka late th.il bis instructions are alt that me claim lor them. Two particular masters call lor laborers. Tbe one calls tor such who like to have their own way and to be their own mas ter. To this call many are ready to an swer "Here am I." But these may all be moral men and not answer the masters full purMise, and so he uses enticements. He says: Here is whiskey, it is bo harm lo take some if you don't lake too much. no will take a glass. How ready tlic aitwer, "Here am 1.
