Pershing for Governor of this State is a most decided farce. He is taken up not from his acquaintance with, or prominence ia public alhtirs, but on account ot a dirty fight between ths Wallace, and Clymer, Randall, et al. wings of the unwashed Democracy. As little is known of Jlr. Pershing in the greater part of the State as if he had been bottled up and hermeti cally sealed, or embalmed like an Egyp tian mummy, or fast asleep with Kip Van Winkle on one of the highest summits of the Catskill mountains. The news of his nomination was a long time reaching here, for these days ot tele grams. Evidently the men who repre sented the Democracy of this county, knowing Mr. Pershing personally, (he having been a law student ia this town.) were ashamed of the nomination and would not telegraph it tothefr constituency, but all- ved the information to reach them thrJt'h the newspapers. But whea the news finally did come, it came like a clap ot thunder to that part of our citizens who d- not keep well enough posted ia politics to know of the unpleasantness ta the Democratic camp, and "Little Cy Pershing has U-en nominated for Governor," was repeated with a guffaw on ail sides. " Who'd athunk that little "Cy" would a bora nominated and CorTroth only get five vote," said an old lady laying doan her sp-ck. "Bat then vou can t tell. If John Latta was elected Lieutenant-Governor, why shouldn't little 'Cy' be nomer nated for Governor." To any but a close obt-erver of the political status ot our Com monwealth, the old ladies remarks were justifiable, but others thought quietly that it it were not to beat Bill Wallace, Lttie Cy 's chance would not have been much better than that ot CotTroth. There has beea a generally expressed wish, notably among the Iiepublicans, and to some extent among the opposition, for a wide awake, active, energetic man of the times as a candidate fir Governor. Such a man the Bepublican party found in the person of Governor Hartranft, but alas how have the opposition disappointed. Judge Pershing, after bein defeated on twe or three occasions for Congress, in this district, was finally elected to the Legislature trom Cambria county. Dur ing his time in the Legislature he did not perform any public duty, or assist in any public enterprise that would cause him to be gratefully remembered by the people of the State. During the "time General Uartranft was in the field fighting the bat tles of his country, and growing and ex panding in his views with the contingen cies ot the times, Mr. Pershing was narrowing down into self, until he finally crawled into his shell of obscurity, where he would have remained until the end of his days but for the factional bickerings between Wallace and his enemies. And this is the man for whom Ross. Bigler, Barr and others were sacrificed. Men who have kept np to the spirit of the times and were known throughout the length and breadth, of the Slate. But why waste more time and space on little Cy. Buckalew, Randall, Speer fe Co., (for it was not the Democratic party that nominated Cy.) sought for a man that knew nothing, had said nothing, done nothing and been nothing tor the past twenty years, and they found in little Cy a character, or rather absence ot a charac ter that exactly filled the biiL And the people of the State are urged to make him Governor, not because of his qualiiicati ns for the office, but because they know noth ing of him, and he wants, neither knows or cares anything about them. Because he has been able politically, to sleep so soundly that neither the thunder of canon, the acclaim of peace, nor the hum of busi ness could aake him, and because he was so insignificant that the people did not care a fig whether he was awake or asleep, alive or dead. There is however one sat isfactory thought about it The people of Pennsylvania do not want such a fossil for Governor. He will be buried nnder an avalanche of fifty thousand majority, and alter the ides ot Xovember, with his rusty gun and his faithful dog, lie may go back to his Rip Van Winkle sleep aiain, and administer tardy justice to the ilollie Ma guircs of Schuylkill county. We have received the loilowing letter ftom a well known subscriber of the Her ald, with a request that it be published. Salisbcrt, Pa., ) August 20, 137.3. ) Dear Sir : I arrived here on last Sat urday, campmeeting was then ia full blast and continued till Wednesday night, when it broke up. There was a resrular turn out oa Suaday, day aad night, it seemed as if persons had come from 20 miles round. The whole camp ground was crowded during the week days there was not much ot a crowd. 1 be weather was nice ; far. mere had to attend to getting in their crops apples, pears, &c, are as scarce ia Somer set county as they are with you. There will be no end to potatoes, they are now as large as a tin aad still growing. The army worm is doing considerable damage among oats, but it will be taken in very fast now and thrashed. Yesterday I was out on the ridge after huckelberries to eat and had a very narrow escape of my lite. After I had eaten a lot and was warm and tired, I went and sat down in a shady place. JI was not there very long till I heard something in the bushes about 50 yards off. 1 kept listening and looking for about 1j minutes before I could see what it was. at last I saw it was a large deer lying down. Having no gun along I came to the conclusion to catch it alive, so I went to work to make something strong to tie iL Took my suspenders and handkerchief but they were not long enough, so I pulled off my drawers and shirt and tore them up in wide strips and twisted them up and made a pretty good rope, after that I made a loop lor each end to put over the two bind lens. After a great deal of hard work I got to it and put tne loops over tne legs, then it jumped up and so did L It then gave one kick with both hind legs. One took me in the breast and the other ia the belly and I went through the bushes head form est for about 30 yards and got tangled up in aa old tree that bad blown down. After lying there for some time I got up and looking around seeing where 1 was and the old tree lying there, I came to the conclusion that I had been struck by light ning, but soon every thing come clear that happened ; feeling pretty cold I felt on my back to find oat whether it had kicked clear through me, but it did not, so look ing around I saw it walking around eat ing. 1 then cut me a good hickory club and went for it to try it over, but I was struck with horror when I got near it, to una instead or a dear it wa a darned infer- nal MuU.
