Our neigh boring town, iche!!sburg, has the railroad fever. The project ot building a branch road from Mann Choice to that town is being agitated, and subscriptions for the purpose ot making the preliminary survey are being taken. A tew days ago we were informed that the money was being rapid ly raised, and we have no doubt that by this time a sufficient sum has been sub scribed to make the survey, the distance be tween the two places is but short, the route is an easy one, and the expenses ot building the proposed branch will certainly lie comparatively cheap. The read would be ot immense benefit to Schellsburg and the counuy around. We trust that our triends may succeed in bringing this new enterprise to an early consummation. Bedford Gazette. This terrible malady has for years, baffled the skill of the medical profession, aad the sulterer had no alternative but to drag out a miserable existeacc until death came as a relief. Ten years ago Dr. H. Bond, a well known physician of Phila delphia. Patients may visit Philadelphia and remain while under treatment at the Pennsylvania Cancer In stitute, one of the handsomest residences in Philadelphia, and the finest remedial Institute in the country, or the remedies, with full directions, can be sent to any part of the country. J'rtss, As excluinge gives the following ac count of a weasel's straugem, with the suspicious remark that it is vouched for by a friend: A grist mill was infested with large rats until ft weasel came and destroyed uearly all of them. There was, however, one large rat which he could not conquer. They hail several pitched battles, in which the rat whiped the weasel until whenever the rat appeared the weasel would seek safety in flight. They were watched for several days, when the weasel was observ ed to be digging a hole in the earth under a pile of lumber. After he had completed it. he approached the mill and the rat 'time atter him as usual. Ho made some show i ot fight until he had got the rat interested, j and then ran into his hole. ' A correspondent of the Phillipsburg Jour Ml, writing fr.im Decatur Mints, July 23, gives the following account of a most extraordinary phenomenon, w hich is vouched tor by trust worthy eye witnesses: About 11 o'clock a. m., on Monday last, a dense column of smoke was teen rising among the grass and weeds near one of the houses at this place, where no coiubusj tible material could be seen. The firs; im pression of those who s-.r.v it was that a subterranean tire Lad burst ed forth. L'pon probing beneath, however, the ground was found to be solid and the fire was confined t) the ground near the sur lace, which was quite wet from the rain oi Saturday night. The ground was thor oughly dug up and stirrpil inexaming the phenomenon, which only added to the fierceness of the fire which had by this time increased to a flame. A shovel was procured and some ot the earth was car ried to a clear spot and spread upon the ground where it blazed like burning pitch. The effect of water was tried upon it, which extinguished the blaze, but it con tinued to smoke for hours after, although repeatedly watered to prevent further burning. This was evidently a case of spontaneous combustion. A SCM-MER SPOItTISO NuidANI E. With the return of summer days and sing ing birds comes that chrome nuisance, the callow sportsman, with dog and gun, to hunt birds and astonish the natives with his powers and smell cf gunpowder. He has none of the instincts of sportsmen, to whom we are indebted mainly tor our game laws, and for the tiaes and penalties that are laid upon their wilful violators. He can hardly tell one animal lrom another. He shoots birds on the nests, birds feeding their young, and till birds alike, whether they are farmers' friends or not. Every depot titr Inland is haunted with these verdant youths, who come to kill and to destroy. They greatly reduce the number of birds, and so multiply in sects that prey upon our crops and reduce the profits of our gardens and fichu. It is settled, so far as anything can lie, by the studies of men best acquainted with the habits of these birds, that almost ail of them at some season of the year live large ly upon insects. They are "the conserva tive force in nature, designed to keep in sect life in check. If the birds eat some fruit, they save a gre-at deal more by de vouring the various caterpillars" and "Worms" that prey upon the burk and leaves of fruit trees and upon the fruits themselves. Ale On Sunday night last, during the severe rain storm, several burglaries were perpe- trated in our midst. The articles stolen lrom Mr. Thompson consisted of fine cloth, vestinirs. suitinrs. and .i onanti'v nt clothing which he had just finished' for some ol his customers. Mr. Thompson's loss by their nocturnal visit is estimated at about one hundred and filly dollars. Part ot the tools which they used ia breakiag into this place were found ia the back yard attached to Lr. J. A. Robb's resi dence. Win. ' Sleinscbncider's house on Spring street was also entered during the same night. This gentleman was unable to slate whether he lost anytlung or not, as he had most of his goods packed pre paratory to moving to Ml. Pleasant. Lnirvbe Advance.
