A steex paritnt ot this place, locks the

Do the city papers say an vthing in re
gard to your own county ? Nothing. I o
they contain notice of your schools,
churches, meetings, impiovements and
hundreds of other local matters of interests,
which our county paper publishes w ithout
y? Not an item. Do they ever say a
word calculated lo draw attention to your
county and its numerous thriving towns,
and aid in their progress and enterprise?
Not a line. And yet there are men w ho
take such contracted view s of this matter,
that, unless they are getting as many
square inches of reading matter in their
own paicr as they do in a city paper,
tbey think they are not getting the worth
of their money. It reminds us of the man
who took the largest pair ot boots in the
box simply because they cost the same as
the pair much smaller that fitted him.

Accordingly, officers J. F. Wed ford and

Shortly after the arrival of our police

Axt one who examines the November
Ai.Dtxt; will lie surprised at th sumptu
ousness of its illustrations, as well as the
high literary merit of its poetry and prose.
Besides the two full iage original pictures,
this numlier contains reproductions of three
celebrated steel engravings, which alone
would cost at the picture shojis no less
than thirty dollars. The Aldine pictur
es) are in every way as tine as the steel en
gravings. Thc first illustration is a full
paee view of Lake Mohonk, in I'Istcr Coun
ty. New York, by Kruseman Van Ellen,
of the National Academy. He depicts all
thc w ild romance of the lake in the moun
tains. Homer Martin has a full page pic
tureof "A White Mountain Brook," grand,
shadowy, and siient. Some of the other
illustrationsare "Home and its Treasures,"
after R. Carrick. it is full of delightful re
membrances at this Thanksgiving season
of the year. "A Chance meeting," and
"Ihe first visit," after Rudaux, are two ten
der and charming pictures of the love life
of an attist. We can say with truth that
no art magazine ever gave its readers a
dozen such superb illustrations in one
numlier. The literary contents of the Al
dine for Novemtwr are of superior quality
and interest. Rev. E. E. Hale, the popu
lar author, and editor ot Old and .eir,
contributes a historical sketch, entitled
"'I hanksgiving Days." Kate Putnam Os
good, sends from France a sprightly story,
called "My Neighlxir." Elise Polko, "a
famous w riter, has a sweet story entitled
"On Drachenfels." The editor of the
Aldixe gives a sketch of the life of Charles
Temple Dix, tbe artist son of Governor
John A. Dix, of New York. Max A. Mul
ler writes of "Translations of American
Books in Euro;e." Mrs. A. H. Leon
owens, the author of "The English Gov

Our Johnstown exc hanges of Thursday

Belinda Lowry, who had been employed
until quite recently, as a domestic in the
family of M. A. Sanncr, Esq., of this place.
The following particulars are copied from
the Tribune:
"About half past nine o'clock this fore
noon, a young lad named Ferguson, w hose
parents reside on Market street, near asli

to an older brother, anil winch contained
two loads. A young lady from Garrett,
Somerset county, aged aliout eighteen
years, was employed as a domestic with
the family, and was at this time engaged
iu scrubbing the stairs leading to the sec
ond story of the building. When the
youth approached her from ihe front room,
with the pi-to) in his hand, she remarked
to him that he had appropriated one of the
several pies that she had lniked the day
previous. He answered, (minting the re
volver at her head, "if you say that again
I will shoot you." "partially turning
