A putrnt has. bwn prauted to l'ulmor Lancaster, of I?urr Oa!;, Michigan, for nothing levs than the shoariiifr of sheep by machinery, instead of a pair of eheep-unears the common way. The ma. chine, which is small and uc-ut, is hung by a strap to the arm of the operator, and placed on the body of the cheep to be p horn. By (imply turning a handle back and forth, and moving the machine over . tho body of the sheep, tho wool is made to fly in double-quick time. It is well known that tho most skilful hands at shec-p-Nhcaring do not cut tho fleece even j and besides, the skin of thti animal is invariable clipped out by the shears in many spots. Thi instrument cuts the fleece rapid ly and evenl v. never cnttinr any rart of the wool twice ; and it avoids cntting the skin of the animal ; it is therefore a unman bi well as a good contrivance, Roup is Fowm. Of all the diseases that 1 have had to contend with, I thing the roup is the worst. It is contairious Of this X am perfectly satisfied, tluit if a fowl in a nock bag it, Unit all will tnke it, unless ine diseased one bo removed.. Houp is sonio- what like tho distemper among dogs. 1 ily fowls arc affected thus i Very difficult in breathing, gaping, rattling in . tho ' throat, swelling of the heud, feverish, eyes swollen, tvitli a tlun. Blnnv matter oozidk Irom them and it sometimes closes them up, mid blind ness is the result.' There is a discharge from the nose of a thick, foetid matter, that is o.'. fensive to tho smell. Tho fowl is dull and mopy, and suffers much. If takon in time it can bo cured, but if suffered to run too long, yon better kill the fowl and put it out of misery, oven it it costs U Aiy remeay is as follows : Take the fowl and put it in a warm place ; trash the head and throat with warm rain water and castile soap ; then take spirits of turpentine and lard, mis well, and rub this mixture on the head and throat thoroughly once a day, and be particular to clean the nostrils well. I have found this remedy to be the best I have ever tried, und I have tried all that are iu tfio different poultry books without doing aify good. Cor. Ohio Cultiva tor. Stirring the Pon.. The editor of the Germantown 'J eleijrajih, says : In seasons of excessive drought, it is of the utmost im portance to crops, to keep tho surface of the soil as light as possible. To do this, it should bo stirred often. By making the surface fine and light, we create a non-conductor, which prevents evaporation, and secures the reten tion of all, or nearly all tho moisture contain ed in the soil, for tho use of the growing plants. In the hot, dry weather of J uly and August, when the "rain is withhold," and egetation parches and shrivels as if swept by the simoom, the cultivator should bo kept contiuually going in the cornGold ; it should never be idle, end the surface kept tine and light. Were this rule obeyed, we should ex perience far less injury from drought, aud secure fur better crops. Raising Calves. Some inquiries being made as to raising calvu, I give you my ex perience. I let them suck until tliey are two tnonths old halter-break them when one week old, and let them have as much milk as they will take twico a day until they are about four weeks old ; then begin to wean thorn off by first milking one teat, and then at the end of one week milkiug two teats, and so on until at lust I give them but one teat onco a day. As soon us I begin to wean them off, 1 commence feeding them with a fow slices of currots or some other vegeta le, and induce them to lick a little corn meal. increasing the quantity as I deprived thera of ii,. ;ii, Ti.r. ...:n ." .hi.. uv tuiib. a. uc ai iieeu me green vegeta ble no longer after thevcau procure crass. I always provide them with a 8 mall whisp of nay as long as i neep mem up. To succeed well, and raise a fino animal, they should have from half to a pint of meal once a day, until they are turned out to grass at one year old. They should alo be carded once a day at least during tho time of stabling. Cor. Al bany Cultivator. ; . . . , , TlWT POR THE KXPEDIKNCY OF DraINACE. John Johnson, of tienoca county. New York, gives iu the American Agriculturist, the fol lowinir plan to ascertain w hether lund nui.ila draining: "Pig holes ubout two and a half feet deep in different parts of tho field j put a cover over the holes so that the rainwater cannot get into them, and if they fill with water until within a foot or so of the nurfuce, in ten or twelve hours, then bis land requires, and will t)ay well fur draining. I think 1 hear F. I. B., and many others gov, that these boles will fill up on any land, if the ground is wet at the time. But I tell them it is not the case. You mav dig as many draius as you please on dry lands, and they will never run water unless the snow is melt ing on the surface. If F. J, b. had stood over the making of between forty and fifty miles of drains, as I have done, he would be a bctterjudgoofwhutwaswet and what woa dry land. After a careful exumiuntion of your "Amer ican pleaders assistant," I take pleasure in ex pressing my entire approval of the selection and composition of the piccedents thus offered to the public. The legal profession iu Pennsylvania stands in need of a correct svatem of pleading, adapted to our habits of businesn, and the practice of the courts. Your forms of dec'iiratious being, to a great extent, founded on the acts of asteuibly will lie a saving of labor to the plcniler. and con duce to afev nnd brevity in our pleadings. It should be in the hands of ctery practising lawyer in our state. Yours, with great respect, JNO.J. PE KON Hon. A. Jordan, Wm. M. Iiockefelkr and M. L. Miilldel, Esquires. W. McCa aTr. Esq., Dear Sir: I received more than a year ago a copy of "Keed.a Pleaders' Assintant" improved by Judge Jordan and others. I examined it with some care soon afterwards, and have had occa sion to use it several timea since. I think it de cidedly valuable as a inauucl for practicing atlorueya -in Pennsylvania, and do not hesitate to recommend it. If it were generally used it would increase the accuracy of the profession in matters which are often very carelessly done. I am very truly yours, 4c, J. S. BLACK.
