: ' : Yankee Doodle. After the Ministers Plenipotentiary of Great Britain and tho United States had nearly concluded their pacific labors at Ghent, the burghers of that quaint old Dutch city determined to give an entertain ment in their honor, and desired to have the national airs of the two treatyniaking puwvrs performed as a part of the pro gramme. 80 the . musical directors were directed to eull upon the American Minis ters and obtain the music of the national afr of the United States. A consultation ensued, at which Bayard and Gallatin favored "Hail Columbia," while Clay, llussell, aud Adams were decid edly in favor of "Yankee Doodle." The musical director asked if any of the gentlemen had the music, and receiving a negative reply, suggested that perhaps one of them could sing or whistle the air. 4;I can't," said Mr. Clay; "I never whis tled ur suug a tune in my life perhaps Mr. Bayard can ?" 'Neither can I," replied Mr. Bayard ; 'perhaps 31 r. Jiussell can ?" Mr. Kussol, Mr. Gallatin and Mr. Adams in turn confessed their lack of musical abil ity. 'I have it !" exclaimed Mr. Clay, and ringing the bell he summoned his colored body-servant. 'John," said Mr. Clay, "whistle Yankee Doodle tor this gentleman. Juhn did so, the chief musician noted down the air, and at the entertainment the Ghent Burgher's Baud played the nationa air of the United fotates with variations. A Penitent Higwayman. In a visit, a day or two since to the penitentiary at Allegheny City, Miss L Dix, the American Florence Nightingale made an address to the prisoners in which she related an incident in which she was herself an actor. It occurcd many years ;tgn. in the wilder portion ot the State o Tennessee. She had, as she says, a con siderable amount of money with her, and though warned of the danger in traveling in certain districts without an armed escort the utterly refused to allow her driver and guide to retain his pistol, notwithstandin his remonstrances and entreaties to the contrar-, as he knew precisely the dangers ot that road, bure enough, as they came to a small clearing in a very swampy tract where there was much fallen and burned timber, a man met them suddenly, pre rented his pistol and demanded her money or Ins lite, fche instantly came to the front and asked if he was not ashamed to attack a woman and in such circumstances But he was resolute, and said he must have money, as he was destitute and in dire need She, equally determined, kept on talking to him of the wrong, impropriety and un manliness of his course, when suddenly dropping his eyes and his pistol, he cried "My God ! 1 have heard that voice before, and immediately began to apologize for his conduct, telling her he had met her in the state prison at I ronton, or in the eastern penitentiary of Pennsylvania, lie refused to take a cent, but she finally insisted on Lis taking some money, not as a gift, but us a sum she wanted to invest with him, to be used, after he had found work and relief, in helping others equally unfortunate.'
