Boyce, of Woodstock, placed her baby, nine months old, in a baby cab standing on the portico, to wheel it in the street. She left it for a moment and step ped into thc house, when the cab started, rolled four steps to the driveway, across that and a piece of ground some ten or twelve rods in width, to thc bank of the Qucchee river, thence down a bank some fifteen feet high into the river. The moth er had started after, but was unable to catch up. She dashed into the river and caught the child, but being in deep water was obliged to let go the babe to save her self. The housemaid had followed af ter her, and reached the river in time to save the mother. The baby was carried by the current about twenty-five rods, when a gentleman who had witnessed the affair reached the stream aud secured the child. A New Specific Against Hydrophobia. Dr. Guyvala, says the British Medical Journal, of Krivoc Ozero, Padolia, for whose trustworthiness Professor Gubler, of Paris, vouches, declares that after a series of crucial trials, which he describes at length, he has found that, after having had opportunities of treating at least 100 cases of men bitten by rabid dogs with the AanlfiiuKi sjn'nosum, he has never in any one of these cases failed to ward off hydro phobia. He gives some startling examples. During the Crimean war, a family of twelve persons had been bitten by a hydrophobic wolf. Six of them entered his wards in the hospital of Oischanka, government of 1 0'ioJia, district ot JJalta. J hey were treated with infusion of the leaves of xan- thium, and all recovered. The six others, who were treated by the actual cautery and the daily use of Genista tinctoria and other drugs, died with hydrophobia in the course oi twelve to sixty days. He recounts many other facts not less striking. For an adult the docs is sixty centigrammes of the drv vowder. rcric-jtwl llircn timo n l.-iv nml continued during six weeks - ! - -t , Children un- dor twelve take half that quantity. Tl duse for animals Is much larirer. A her The herd of thirty oxens had been bitten by a mad wolf; eight had succumbed with sj'inptoms of hydrophobia. Ihe commissary of police came to Lr. Urzvvala for his "antirabic powder." He gave three ounce of the powder, with bran, daily to each of the animaLs ; none of them suffered from the uiscitse. These are examples of which r (rrzyvala says he has a hundred others Fiat e.rpcrinniititri). We have heard too often of specifics fbr hydrophobia not to re gard this last claimant with sorrowful suspi cion. But the herb is at least a harmless one ; its ordinary propreties seem to be main 1' sudorific ; and since animals suffering from rabies are only too frequently at hand and the remedy is one win h grows plenti ful! in the middle regi ns ot rrauce as Pouoha, let us hope that our rrcnchcol leagues will lose no time in putting the pro phylactic to the test, aud perhaps their pro fessors m our own vetenuary colleges might help to set at rest the hopes this positive and detailed etatcment is calculated to excite Special jSTotice. Lkt's all be honest and confess that the cash FVFtc-ni in biif iness is bet and safest.
