SEED POTATOES From B. K. Bliss & W Potato Calahgue. COMPTON'S SURPRISE. This wonderful Potato, wonderful for its fine quality and productiveness, ia a seedling of the Frince Albert, fertilized with the pollen of the Jon Pinkeye. The first year from seed there vcre fj-ir Potatous weighing one-half pound. The following Spring thee were cut to single rve, and planted on poor noil. The product of the half pound wa three hundred ami ninety oti Pim'!a, nixty-two pounds of beautiful tubers being picked from the surface of a measured rod, a it is a peculiarity of this Potato that they often mature a crop on the surface under the lV,ia,;e. The next season they were planted in soil from which a poor crop had been taken the previous year, and, although the season wa very unfavorable, this seedling yielded six turn more 'ban the Ko.-e and other old sorts planted by it, and remained sound, while the old varie:ivs rotted badly. Thee Potatoes are invariably sound to the center, a hollow one l:avipir nevtr yet been found. It is a late variety, riju-ning with the Pcaehblow. Its shape i- oval-iiblong, "eyH sunken, brow prominent, skin smooth, color reddish-purple, flesh white; p,-ows to a largo size. It is believed to be much the most abundant in starch of any variety tniit. It retains its quality perfectly throughout the year, appearing on the table like a ball .f flour. The high quality of this Potato late in Spring may, perhaps, be owing to its tardi viM in sprouting, remaining plump and free from sprouts when kept until June, and uevcr Laving that wilted appearance common to early sorts. The, following extract from the report of the Committee awarding the premiums offered in 1J7", confirms all that was claimed for them by the originator when firm introduced: C)MITOnV irxv.v mcE has received the unanimous verdict for the most prolific Potato culti vated at present. Yields of from twelve to twenty pounds to the hill are reported by the hundreds, and in one instance '2d pounds were dug from one hill. Asa rule, the most prolific varieties are not of the best eating quality, but to this, Compton's Surpise is an exception. Thousands have testified that they never ate a better Potato. Its uniform mealiness of grain, f'Uibincd with the purest, flavor and its snowy whiteness of fk-sli. which is not in the least .fleeted by its blue skin, can not fail to make it highly valuable as a family Potato. This variety show a peculiar tendency to produce a surface crop, not found in other kinds. Two years ago we paid $15 for one Bushel of the above Seed Potatoes. EXTRA EARLY VERMONT. Too superior merits of this variety, first sent got by us in the Spring of 1873, may now be onsidered as fully established. It has been largely cultivated over every section of the coun try, the past two season, and fully sustains tle awarding the premium offered by us in 1373, in reports of the various competitors: "Thk Euily V Kit mont has. as proved by sustained it previous reputation, yearly all the . . . . than tli Karly Hote. and many even more, lis unuorm ana large size i recojrnizeu oy every one. Mr. McLeod savs ; 'There are more than K0 in tho amount I raised that would weigh fltm one to two pounds each ;' and Mr. Salier raised one tuber that weighed THREE rousjrs Tivr.iA K ouxcb. Its superior cooking qualities arc unanimously commended, well as its compact growth in the hill and its freedom from dieae, and with the thousands of cultivators who have grown it alongside the Early ltve, there seems to be no doubt left, that in quality, Liriiwss, curlinc.! and yield, it far surprises that celebrated variety." A lirst-cla.s certificate was warded this variety by the Royal Horticultural Society of Lon dim, 173. C u rios. In consequence of the great similarity between the Extra Eaiti.y ermokt ;:ti.i tho Eakly Rose, many of the latter will.doubtless be offered by unprincipled persons as the Early Vermont. To avoid imposition, we caution purchasers to beware of itinerant peddlers, and purchase their stock of reliable parties only. We employ no peddlers or agents. Adre-s all orders diiectlv to our house. ll.ii Ii .f these varieties" were sold at ?4.o0 a Bushel last year. We now offer them at $2.00 per B.i-hel, Cash on delivery. ' ' October 7, lS75-tf. 1875.
