SEED POTATOES From B. K. Bliss tf- iSoMs' Potato Catalojuc. COMPTON'S STJKPHISE. This wVnderful potato, wonderful for its fine quality and productiveness, is a seedling of the 1'iince Albert, fertilized with the pollen of the Ixng i'inkeye. The first rear from seed there were four I'oUitors weigliin one-half pound. The following Spring these were cut to single eyes, and planted on poor soil. The product of the half jound was three hundred ami ninety- cne maniU. sixtv-two iHMind of beautiful tubers beinjr tucked from the surface of a measured rod, as it i a peculiarity of this Potato that thev often mature a crop on the surface under the foliage. I he next .season tuey were planted in soil trom which a poor crop had been taken the previous year, and, although the season was very unfavorable, this seedling yielded six lime. more than the Koe and other old ports planted bv it, and remained sound, while the old varieties rotted badly. Tlune Potatoes arc invariably sound to the center, a hollow one bavin? never vet been found. J t is a late variety, ripening with the Peachblow. Its shape i. oval-oblong, eyes sunken, brow prominent, skin smooth, color reddish-purple, flesh white; if row to a lanre size. It is believed to be much the most abundant in starch of any variety extant. It retains its quality perfectly throughout the year, appearing on the table like a ball of Hour. The high quality of this Potato late in Spring may, perhaps, be owing to its tardi ness in sprouting, remaining plump and free from sprouts when kept until June, and never bavin? that wilted appearance common to early sorts. The following extract from the report of the Committee awarding the premiums offered in l7;5. confirms nil that was claimed tor them by the originator when first introduced: ("omi'To.n's Sl'kpkisk has received the unanimous verdict for the most prolific Potato culti vated at present. Yields of from twelve to twenty pound to the hill are reported by the Kurvlret??, and in one instance 28. pounds were dug from one hill. As a rule, the most prolific varieties are not of the best eating quality, but to this, Compton s fcurpise is an exception Thousands have testified that they never ate a better Potato. Its uniform mealiness of grain, combined with the purest, flavor and its snowy whiteness of flesh, which is not in the least :iliectcd by its blue skin, can not fail to make it highly valuable as a family l'otato. IMS variety hl.ows a peculiar tendency to produce a surface crop, not found in other kinds. Two years ngo we paid' $10 for one Uushel of the above Seed Potatoes, EXTRA EARLY VERMONT. The superior merits of this variety, first sent out by us in the Spring of 1S73, may now be onsidcred as folly established. It has been largely cultivated over every section of the coun try, the past two seasons, and fully sustains the high character given it by the committee for awarding the premium ofiiml by us in 1873, in the following statement, after examining the ivpirls of the various competitors: "Tim: Ktnr.Y Vkrmoxt has. as proved bv the numerous reports before us, more than viftained its previous reputation, yearly all the competitors declare it from one to tu o weeks earlier than the Early Pour, and many even more. Its uniform and large size is recognized vv everv one. Mr. McLeod says ; 'There are more than 100 in the amount I raised that would weigh fi-.m one to two pounds each ;' and Mr. Salier raised one tuler that weighed three roUN'ns i wklvi: orxcKS. Its superior cooking qualities are unanimously commended, as weH as it compact growth in the hill and its freedom from disease, and with the thousands of cultivators w ho have grown it alongside the Karly Kose, there seems to be no doubt left, that in quality, ,; incs. earline and yield, it far urpasc that celebrated variety " A lirst-elass certificate was warded this variety by the lioyal Horticultural Society of Lon don, 1 7.'. t'vt'Tiox. In consequence of the great similarity between the Extra Eaki.y Vkrmoxt and the Early Rosk, many of the latter willjdoubtless be offered by unprincipled persons as the E.yi'.t.y Vkrmoxt. To avoid imposition, we caution purchasers to beware of itinerant peddlers, and purchase their stock of reliable parties only. We employ no peddlers or agents. A dress all orders directly to our house. P.oth of these varieties were sold at S4.50 a Rushcl last year. Wc now offer them at $2.00 per Iiurhel, Cash on delivery. October 7, lS73-tf. THE TANITK CO.
