Irvin,of Jersey Shore, claims to he the champion botato bug catclier of Ly coming county, of potatoes and the voraeious bugs, have taken a particular liking to it. Mr. Irvin declared war against them, and immediately commenced hostilities. Ou one-fourth of an acre he captured 616,842 of the enemy Ly actual count, consisting of hardshell veteran bugs, whose especial delight seemed tA h in completely destrovinjr the vines. t.rww A 1 - After having disposed of this batch of prisoners by placing them in a tin can, saturating them with coal oil, and applying fire to them, he was attacked by a fresh army of young bugs. In the engagement wlih'h ensued he captured thirty-live quarts of the young rascals, which, on actual count, wore found to foot up five hundred ;iik1 thirtv-two thousand. The numler wis ascertained by counting one quart, which was found to contain fifteen thousand two hundred, and averaging the balance. Mr. Trvin is determined to prosecute the eampaign vigorously, and will not cease offensive operations till he has slaughtered ten hundred thousand of the voracious jots. If there is another man in Lycom ing county who has waged a more successful warfare against this enemy of the potato crop, let him speak out at once, or forever after hold his peace. The agricultual society should award M r. Irvin a special premium for what he has done to aid in exterminating the pest. Abont Motors. Spjaking of motors : AVc have Captain Ericsson's application of solar heat, l'rof. CrookeV demonstration of the potentialities of solar light, Mr. Keeley's mysterious dis covery of the dynamic cuergy of common air, and now we have a suggestion for a fourth source of power. It will be remem bered that some time ago there was a vio lent explosion on Washington street, Bos ton, which did great damaze to the build in ir. After a careful search no explanation of the accident could be arrived at. In the last number of the Journal of Chemistry. Pr. J as. 11. Nichols expresses his unquali fied conviction that the destroying force was the vapor of ether. The building in wiiieh the explosion occurred was occupied as a laboratory, and in the cellar there was a five pound bottle of ether. Supposing this bottle to have been broken, and the contents to have united with the air, in pro portion of one to six, lr. Nichols says an explosion would have occurred with suffi ce nt force to lift the heaviest walls of ma sonary ; and this is what he believes to have taken place at the Boston disaster. It would seem that a force that can lift a building off its foundations, and have no more costly constituents than air and ether, ought to be harnessed and sent to work. But the harnessing ; there's the rub. What Jlarey among chemists will tame the force, break it of its explosive habit, and average its energies ? CROP NOTES. PENNSYLVANIA. There will be a falling off in the apple crop this year in Eastern Pennsylvania compared with the large yields of 'former seasons. The supply, however, will still be ample for all ordinary domestic purposes, though cider and apples will be somewhat higher than last year. The Chester county Village Record sun plies information from various points in that important agricultural district, in re lation to the wheat and grass crops, both of which are now harvested ; and this informa tion is to the effect, that while the grass is generally thort, the wheat turns out better than was expected a month ago, though not a full crop. Similar reports come from H parts of Berks county. So far as the crops of this county are concerned, of wheat, there will not be much over half a crop. Corn and potatoes are doing well and a large crop of each may be expected. Hay is reported light all over the county many farmers not having enough for home consumption Kittanniug ItqnilUran. The recent rains have been very beneS end to the growing crop of tobacco, and the vield in Lancaster county will exceed that of many previous years. There is a large ajca planted of tobacco in the townships of W and West Ilcmpffeld, Fast and West Donegal, Mauor, Conoy, and Mount Joy, which comprises the tobacco growing dis trict of the county. The plants are in a vcry thriving condition, and have thus far escaped injury from any cause. Although somewhat backward early in the season, ! Ti tcf ,ra"ins have helped the crop wonder fully. Xhe tobacco crops of Lancaster coun ty amounted in 1870 to one and a lialfmil-!'jn,'-t dolJars and to about the same sum la 171. From present appearances the 'roP of 1S75 may exceed that amount by a million. There will also be a very 1:tr?e peach crop this year along the Sos Muelunna.
