A correspondent of the New Ycrk
Timcs, who is making a tour of observa
tion along the coasts of the Great Lakes,
has this to iy concerning the city of Eric!
It contains a liberal element of prophecy :
''Erie is the gate-way through which
both the anthracite region of Eastern Penn
sylvania and the bituminous fields of the
western part of the State send out more
than live hundred thousand tons a vear.
It is, therefore, Pennsylvania fuel which
drives most of the steam vessels in our in
land seas, and the upward bound traveler
traces it wherever he goes, smelting the sil
ver ores of Silver Islet at Wyandotte, iron
at Marquette, and copper at Portage Lake.
Not only are the matchless fuels of Penn
sylvania carried out through Erie to the
exhau.stles3 metalliferous regions of Lake
Superior, but also through this ort pass
vast quantities of Lake "Superior iron ore
to the smelting furnaces of the Shcnano
Valley, and also to the Susquehanna re-
3iuch of the pig iron smelted at
gion.
the Lake Superior furnaces is received at
1 i . i ...
i-iine and thence distributed to the rolling
mills and foundries of all parts of the Xor
them States."

store on Monday and has been there ever
since. The bird is the size of a canary, its
color on the back is like that of a whip

gether is a pretty and well proportioned
