UL A Story of Old John Riley. tt,oi)r the death notices in oar last was that of an aed lady, Mrs. Barbara JJebfricd, who had died in Eston, at the residence of her son in law; Val. Hilburn, y Jhc death of this aed personage brings to our recollection a story which we have often heard from the lips of one of her relatives and which will prove in terestifl to many of our readers. Tne father of the deceased was Henry Mar .filler who restdad in Upper Mount i..t,u township, ana uieu m a r.ouso .1,0 traces of which may still te seen with ja a hundred yards of the site of the old fraud's school house. Mr. Marstellar and ,ho notorious Blue Mountain hunter. John Riley, wcre deadly enemies, the latter charzing Marstellar with haviug -!.,c,l his f Riley's) un by sorcery. Thi the hunter held was a crime ranking with irurdcr and he took every occasion that ,ftor" to rienounce ins neighbor as r.Vrer. In 1 801 Henry Marstellar ,u u . . - . while attempting to leap upon a raft in H.'bware. iumped short of the mark 0n,l fell into the stream. From this im iiiersi 'u he took a severe cold, and finally contracted a fever which caused his death a d eJ on Jsunaay aiternoon at one o'clock, in the presence of a Relvidere ..viirian. When Riley heard of his death and was sure of the hour of his de parture he invented the story that ex actlr upon that minute he had shot into tic ftuiuDofa white oak tree at Tot's :,n accompanying the shot which such hesarei" a to kill his enemy. This ttory Riley delighted to repeat, taking unon himself credit for having killed Martellar. While no one would believe such a ridiculous tale at this day, yet severity years ajo there wcre many who -rave it credit. The boldness of llilcy his bravado and well attested recklessness cuiif le 1 with the belief that he was able to do what he claimed, ma le turn an ob jact of f?ar and drea l to all who crossed his rath. Riley has followed Marstellar to the grave, and now the daughter of the litter is 11 timbered among the gons at an extreme old age. In a few years more Ml the oiu-e famous hunter will be anions the unnumbered millions that are forgot ten ana the deeds of his life, which su rer.-titious hearers believed to have firmer .-round than his lancy, win nave passed out of recollection. Even now there but verv few alive who remember old John liiley, the hunter of the Blue Mountain Eat ton Arnns. A DUEL BETWEEN BOYS. An extraordinary case was brought be fore the Liudscy (Lincolnshire) magis tratcs on March Two boys, Gerald Maurice Brown and George Henry Sea Tare, pupils at a boarding school iu Liu coin, quarreled about a trivial matter, and Browo, by way of settling the dimeulty, sent Scaiirave a formal challenge to fijrht a duel, hfeagrave duly accented it, and about two o'clock, at which time the boys are allowed to go out for a walk, the due list aod their seconds started for a se cluded ?rot Here Brown's second, a boy niaied Djwsoa, loaded the pistol for Brown, and a youth named Walter Green did the same oSce for Seagrave. Both pittas were loaded with powder and ball. jaws'jn measured the distance decided upon thirteen peaces and placed a peg ia the gruund for the antagonists to stand against. Dawson then couuted three and dropped a handkerchief. He coun te J slowly, and the boys took direct aim at each other, firing the instant the hand kerchief Jell, cagrave immediately cried out, "I'm hit," and then lay down. It was theu found that his pistol had burst. The seconds then searched for the wound acd found it to be in the leg. They bound up th wound, and with the aid of brown assisted the boy home. The pis to's used on the accasion were bought on their route at a toy shop, sixpence each being tl.2 price given. One of the wit nesses (all of whom were scholars) de scribe) the combatants as being ou ap parently friendly terms while going to the place cf the fight, and said that no ill temper was displayed when on the cround The magistrates remanded the prisoner, Urown, and the two seconds ua til Satur day, pending the doctor's report of the state if 'eagrave. Pall Mail Gazette. Xot long since a very nervous lady took passage at the Tip Top House, White Mountain?, to descend by the almost per pendicular railroad. llcr fears were ap farreat to every one, and the following u tnque dialogue took place between her and the conductor.
