It is fortunate that we attend to our own interests in our own way, and that we are now in a position to go ahead to any required extent iu the iron trade. As we export locomotives to Russia and Germany, so we expect in due time to ex port Into to all Europe, just as we now do cotton and provisions. We shall not rest satisfied until we do this ; for when that point is reached the great contest will be fended, and American iron will be master bf the field as clearly as American cotton boir is. It is not the increase of the bread Stuffs exports that we would now turn our attention to, for in that line Russia, Ger many, and the Mediterranean countries kre our formidable rivals. But we should build iron works all over the Northwest; tutu wheat into iron, and instead of ship ping pig of pork ship pigs of iron. See what this industry has already done for the West. The census of 1870 shows the product of manufactures in these states thus; Ohio S2G9.713,G10 ; Indiana, $108,017,278 ; Illinois, S205,620,G72 ; .Missouri, $202,2 12,429 ; Michigan, S118, 394,976; Wisconsin, 877,241,326. And sll this rests upon the remat Labia growth nd prosperity of the Western iron manu fact ore, as is seen io the fact that the largest ioerca6c is to the iron districts. North America. The Latest Horror: On Tuesday night of last week, a fire trke out in the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York, which damaged the buiMing and furniture to the amount of about $50, 000. After the fire had been subdued, fixtecn of the servants were found dead in their rooms. Their bodies were all horribly charred and disfigured, and were found in various positions, some of which indicated that they had been overcome by the dense Fojoke and intense heat while they were endeavoring to eseape. Some of the bodies were found lying in the bed, but a majority were lying upon the floors, near the doors and win dows, which latter were covered with a strong network of heavy wire, which pre vented the escape of those who sought egress in this direction. So stron? were these barriers that considerable effort on the part of the firemen wa? necessary for their removal A number of others were found alive, but severely burned. Killing Animals. Many persons would be glad to know how to kill an animal without suffering and we venture to give the benefit of our experience. We are constantly called upon to destroy horses, dogs and cats, and have little difficulty io doing it. For Tories we uee a large sponge, say six io dies in diameter, thoroughly saturated with chloroform, which is dropped into a bag forge enough to be drawn over the lorva's oose. It is not desirable to have ht bag "air tight j" for, if so, suffocation it likely to cusue. In two or three min utet the beige is unconscious, and in eight to ten minutes dead, without suffering Tor doj:s and cats a similar proeees, using a nr.all j.oo:e and bag ; or, these animals, with the saturated sponge, may be put iu a box admitting some air, when they soon 'go to sleep " Seventy-five cents' worth f chloroform will kill a horse, and twen ly five cents' worth a dog or cat. If one raturutiou of the sponge docs not com j-lete the work, repeat it." Our Dumb Animals. Stroudsburg Market ISeport. Corrected weekly for The Jeffersonian bv C. D. Erodhead.
