JUI ;1 -5 J ELIRY N. SMITH, OF WALL STREET. Story of a Pennsylvania Shoemaker who did not Stick to his Last. Tlie following account of a Tioga county shoemaker is from a New York corres Miin!ciit of the Cincinnati Commerical : Henry N. Smith is kuovrn throughout the couutry as one of the most desperate aud successful operators in Wall street. It was he who became so noted in the Pintle Friday time as the bead of the firm of Smith, Gould & Martiu, it was he who was in with Fisk in the bold operations against the Krio Ilailroad, and it was he who made a corner on greenbacks last wiotcr by carrying five millions of dollars in greenbacks on his person aud lockiug them up in the Tenth National Pank, which-last operation became the subject of Congressional iunuirv. Smith came on to Washington and was examined. - The committee did not get much comfort out of his answers. They asked him i! he had locked up five millions of dollars in greenbacks. lie frankly said he had. They asked him why he did it. He free ly acknowledged that he did it to make money by the operation, and wanted to know what the committee intended to do about it. Without answering, the mem bers of the committee asked what right be had to lock up that amount of money. Then he got angry, and told them that it was none of their business ; that the mon ey was his own and he could do wilh it as he liked ; and it was about this time (hat the committee found they bad made u niitake. Smith collected about fifty dollars as witness fees ami returned to New York, and that was the last of the investigation. A gentleman who was al so a witness before the committee said subsequently, that Smith actually carried the 5,000,000 on hi3 person for two days. The lining of his overcoat was fill ed with pockets, and into these the money was stowed. tnith is about thirty-Gvc or thirty ix years of age, short of stature, slight of frame, and has red hair. The latter he wears cut close, and his whir-k ers ala militairc, or mutton chop, with mustache. His name is not Henry 31 Smith, nor Henry N Smith, but Norman Henry Smith. He is a native of Ting, Pa , a little village which is shut in with charming grace from the outside world by a circle of hills, which in fall presents an unchanging appearance that clings to one's memory forever. In that pretty little village this mouster operator wa born, and here he is called to this day plain Tom Smith, a nickname he got vhea a baby. It is nothing against Ton; that he spent his young days about as other village boys do, aud it is nothing aga;nst him that he learned the shoe ro.ikcr's trade, and was an excellent work man. It is said there that Tom Smith c-m make the Lest Cue boot of nay man in America. A love scrape, if I am correctly inform ed, drove him from his hammer and lap. stone, and took him to Buffalo a year o: two before the war. While there he at tended a course of instruction in one ol the Business Colleges which were so com mon then. From this he operated in BulLlo in a small way, going finally ti Albany. He could tot long remain in such a place, aud he turned bis eyes to ward New York. II is career as a money maker is with out parallel in history It would be idle to estimate his wealth, for to day it might be twenty millions, and to morrow ten He is called the successor of Jita Fisk, but that is an insult to him. lie posses 60S the same reckless daring, but he brought to his experience a keener and more deliberate judgmeut aud intelligence thau Fisk had. Besides, he has none of the "fast" qual ities which Fisk possessed. He has no desire to display his wealth ostentatious ly ; lie does not care to build an ojera house that be may have the privilege of the green room, and is uot likely to run a line of steamers merely to show himsell in an admiral's uniform, nor to show him self at the head cf a regiment at a cost ol thousands cf dollars. He livc3 as be comes a very wealthy man, and owns a number of the best horses that money can buy merely for his own driving. Ilr has considerable money invested in reai estate in his native town, where he ha. provided handsomely for bis father ao l mother. A Rochester boy teased hi girl for an hour to go out aud take a lunch with Lira, and she at last cousented. Though not a bit hungry in the least, she man aged to get away with a Ftew, a plate ol raw, a white fish, an Irondequit trout, two quail on toast, a glass of sherry and a half pcu-a-d of caramels. Her escort Left for Denver the next day. A merchant in a Connecticut village recently kis?ed the hired girt while l.i. wife was locking in through the window. "It is thought that he will be out aain by next Thanksgiving' is the comment made by the local paper that reported tke case. FALL AND 11 At 1ST. RTTSTE-R'S.
