I it i i i Six men and feveral does secured 427 rabbits in oue day lust week in Lancaster county. Those who go round with the contribu tion box iu Califuruiau churches plead and argue the case in the pews sis they jro along. The following dialogue, it is said, took place between one of the these gentry aud an honest looking miner. Doacon L extended the box to Kill, who slowly shook his head, "Come. "William, give something," says the deacon. "Can't do it," paid Bill "Why uot ? is not the ca-.K-e a good one V "Yes, ?o,I eijoa'b ; bat I am not able to give any thin'," auswered Hill. "Pooh ! pooh ! 1 know better; you iuut:ire n:e a better reason than that " "Well, I owe too much money ; I must be jus-t before I am generous, you know." "Rut, William, you owe God a larger debt lhau any one eUe." "That's true, deacon, but he ain't pushing rue like the rest of my creditors." MOLES. Ladies have a horror of those black eminences oc the face called moles. Even homely men dislike tlicai, but there they ordinarily remain as guides iu giving a description of an applicant for a passport A mole is a thickening of the epider mis, or outer skio, probably induced by an obstruction in the outward ends uf a fluster of sudorific ducts or sweat tubes. To b-i clear of them readily, run a fine needle through one of them from one ide to the other. Let an assistant take hold of both ends of the needle aud puli so as to make a neck of clear skin at the base. It is neither paiulul, diEicult, nor attended with hardly a tinge of blood. Next ligate that neck behind the out dragged mole with a delicate, strong, waxed silk thread, that cuts off the cir culatiou ; clip away the unused thread and wait the result. A slight local in flamtiialion ensues, which is the gluing together the new surface of the stretched f-kin In a few days the old oflence drops off, deprived of nutrition, leaving no scar. If a little reddish by the remains of a subsiding inflammation, wet the spot oc casionally with cold water. Proceed to the next, and the next, seriatim. Before aware of it any mole disfigured face may become as good as new. Lead Pencils. In the manufacture of lead pencils, the Florida red cedar is mostly used io this country and in lvirope ; some 4ioen" wotrd, as the Germans call it, cr Euglish yew. is used in Germany ; white pine is O'icasioaally usod for a common grade of carpenter's pencil. The "lead" of the pencils is the well known graphite or plumbago ; the best of this the natural. f'uod io a pure state io masses large en ou-;h to cut into strips. Of this there i but one mines now up to the standard, which is in Asiatic' Siberia, and pencils made from this graphite are all one grade The Cumberland mines io Euglaivl were the first discovered, but are dow almoi exhausted. What was formeily refuse iu cutting the graphite is now ground, cleaned and refined, and then mixed with a fine clay. Id mixing the clay and graphite, great care is taken in selecting and cleaning the clay and gettiug the proper propor ions ; the mixture, with water, after be ing well kneaded, is placed iu a large re reiver and strongly compressed and fore ed out through a small groove at the bot torn, io the shape of a thread of the thick ucs3 and style required, either square, octagon or round. This thread, or lead wire, is cut into bars of the proper length f ' (done by little gitls). aud then straighten cd, dried at mederate heat and packed iu air crucibles and placed iu the furnaces ; the grade of the lead depends upon the amountof heatit is exposed to. the amount of clay used iu the mixing, and the the quality of the plumbago. The coloring of the lead is by various pigments. The Wood, after being thoroughly seaooneJ, i3 cut into thiu strips and dried again ; then cut iuto strips pencil length These strips are grooved by machinery, thea carried on a belt to the glueing room, where the lead is glued iu the groove, aud then the other half of the pencil glued on. Alter beiu dried un der pressure, they are sent to the turu ing room aod rounded, squared or made octagon, by a very ingenious little ma chine, which passes them through three sets cf cutters, aud drop.? them ready for polishing or coloriog. The former is done on lathes by boys and the latter by a machine, which holds the brush and turns the pencils fed to it through a hop per. After a pencil is polished, it is cut the exact length by a circular saw, and the end is cut smooth by a drop knife, the pencil resting on an iron bed. The s amping is done by a hollow die. which is heated ; the gold or silver foil is then laid on the pencil, which rests io ao iron bed, aod the die is then pressed oo it by a 8:rew lover. The pencils are then ready to go to the pm-kin-; room. JLmtcrican Exchange and RevU-w. FALL AND 'I IS .At 1ST. RUSTEE'S.
