Cl)c 3fcffcrsoman, THUESDAY, JUNE G, 1867. Bgi. John Shivcly, Esq., has sold his property, purchased of "Daniel Peters, some two years ago, in this borough, to Mrs. llcbccca Drinker. The Monthly Report of the Agri cultural Department is on our table, and is filled with most valuable experimental and statistical information. We are in debted to the Hon. Isaac Newton, Com missioncr, for the copy before ua. Christie Hiller has added a Piano Forte to the-attractions of his Saloon. The in strumeut is both handsome and excellent in tone, and, manipulated by a professor of the divine art, discources music most eloquently. Christie is, undoubtedly, a man of enterprise. . - Dyspepsia, We know of no remedy equal to Coc's Dyspepsia Cure lor this trouble. It en ablcs the patient to take any wholesome food, stops distress after eating a soon an you take it, and is a perfect regulator o the Stomach. tST The lull, last week, in the al most continuous rain, with which we have been blessed nearly all spring, was made good use of, by our farmers, in pet ting in their corn, potatoes, &c. The ftorra of Suuday last, however, shows that the water is not all down yet. EST The names of the parties killed and injured by the railroad accident, of which we made mention last week, are T. Howell, engineer, and Alfred May nard, fireman, killed, and William Ace. brakesman, badly injured. Ace, it is aid, will recover. jcg. Duck Deer, Schweitzer and Lim Lerger Case, and all the other delicacies of the season, accompanied with music on the Piano Forte by skillful performers, will be on hand at Christie Hiller's Sa loon an Saturday next. Lovers of good things should make a note of this. The new Time Table of the Del.. Lack. & Western Railroad, was received just as we were going to press. It will appear next week. The only material change is in the time of startiug from Philadelphia, which is at S a. m. instead iSf Thousands have been changed by the use of the Peruvian Syrup (a protox ide of Iron) from weak, sickly, suffering creatures, to strong, healthy and happy men and women, and invalids cannot rea sonably hesitate to giro it a trial. For Dyspepsia and Debility it is a specific. 7 Dr. Up De Graff, desires us to state that he will, positively, leave Strouds burg at the close of the week, to meet en gagements elsewhere. The Doctor has performed a nunibef of important opera tions eince he has been with us, and, so far as we can learn, each operation was a success. The Scranton Republican says, that the new Stone Bridge, nearly com pleted, by the D., L. & Western Railroad Company, over the Lackawanna, at Scran ton, was badly injured by the recent freshet, in the undermining of one of the abutments. It is feared that it will prove a failure on that account. Com pleted the brigde would have been one of the finest in the country. Its cost to the empany is about 100,000. tgfThe" farce which the French Gov ernment attempted to enact, in the erec lion of an Empire in Mexico, in opposi tion to the Monroe Doctrine, promises to assume a deep tragedy hue. The Libe rals under Jaurez have at last captured Maximilian and his government; and fears are entertained that the Liberals, acting upon the example set by Max., when in power, will retaliate by shooting the Emperor and all his chief officers. Our Government has interposed to save the lives of the prisoners, and, it is to be hoped, will be successful. We are under obligations to the Hon. A. L. Kussell, Adjutant-General ol the Commonwealth, for a copy of his An nual Report. TLe Report forms a com plete Roster of the Commander-in-Chief and Staff of the Commonwealth, and of the offieers of each Regiment, Independ ent Dattery or Company furnished by the State to the service. It is, without doubt, the most interesting report ever issued by the department, and shows the expendi ture of an amount of labor and care in its compilation, which is highly credita ble, both to the General and his subor dinates The extent of the business of making and selling cigars in Lehigh county, will be made evident in the fact that the ci gar inspector for the mouth of April etamped 419,000 cigars. ' 1 1 - - -mm- Crops grow finely new. Court Our Court was engaged, from Tuesday morning of last week until Wednesday morning of this week, in the trial of the Commonwealth vs. Alexander Gould, Wil liam Ackerson, Henry Mcckes and Peter Hettinger. Quite a number of witnesses were exauiiued, including several medical celebrities from abroad; and every facil ity was afforded both the prosecution and defense, in the brin"inr together of wit"- ncss, and the thorough sifting of testimo ny so as to elicit the truth. Nothing could be wore fair and impartial than was the action of Judge Barrett and his AssocTates throughout the trial; and if the conduct of the former, in the trial of the parties at Mauch Chunk, was measured by the same standard as that which ex hibited itself here, it is a marvel to know upon what grouuds the viterperative ti rades of the Carbon Democrat wore based. The charge of the Court was excellently conceived; and while it made plain to the minds of the Jurors the law in the case, left all questions of fact for their ad judication and settlement. We might fill our paper with the evidence in the case; but much of it was unfit for publication, and much more of it, especially, thatgiv en by the medical men, would not be un derstood by any but those versed in med ical science. To leave thcto portions of the testimony out, would be but giving a lop-sided report, which could only have the tendency to befog and mislead public opinion, and possibly to create still great cr prejudice in the public mind than now exists. We chose, therefore, rather to content ourself with giving the verdict of twelve "honest and lawful men," who were sworn to try the cause according to the law aud testimony, and who, after pa tiently listening to the testimony of wit nesses for some five days, from half-past eight o'clock, a. m., until about half-past ten o'clock, p. m., and the speeches of counsel and the charge of Court for nearly three days more, on their oaths, declared that they found the defendants not guilty. lu every point of view the case was well tried: Judges, Jurors, and Attorneys all doing their duty. The case for the Com monwealth was ably managed by Messrs. Davis and Holmes, who were deprived of the assistance of Mr. Fox by illness; and as ably managed by Messrs. Dreher, Al bright and Stiles for the defendants. The following named gentlemen were jurors in the case: Samuel D. Bush, Samuel Neyhart, A. Jacksoa Coolbaugh, Philip Swartwood, II. S. Waguer, Obediah Towusend, Alexander Raubenold, Daniel Drown, John Mosier, Samuel Guliek, John Michaels, Samuel Strunk. Oq rendition of the verdict, the pris oners were discharged, but were immedi ately arrested by order of Judge Barrett, and bound over in the sum of 55,000 each to appear at Mauch Chunk, ou Fri day morning next, to answer the charge Rape. The work of drafting was performed, but it was so bunglingly done that either the committee was ashamed of the work, or the meeting was ashamed of its committee, for through cither evcut their names, are not given. The best and most spirited resolution of the lot is that in which, by a peculiar process of. Democratic white, washing, they advise the party to " giro encouragement to our young and able Editor, Mr. A. O. Greenwald." " Young and able Editors" need encouragement, the world over; and especially so when, as in this case, he is hampered in by the different views of as many aspirauts, who demand his good offices, as there are days in the year. The other resolutions we will notice more at length at our leisure There are many fancy poiuts contained in them, and which deserve ventilation. SOT We arc pleased to learu that some of our Democratic cotemporaries, arc begin nins to find out, that all about Horace Greeley is not so bad as they have been trying to make themselves believe it was Just now they are particularly laudatory in their panegyrics upon him. Even our immaculate neighbor of the Democrat is making much over him, and, in three set eral articles in his last paper, thinks there may be some nood in Horace. We have 0 not the least doubt but that if our friend could make up his mind to push his in vestigations to the exhaustion of the sub ject, or any near approach thereto, he would find that Horace, was all good gcucral amnesty, manhood suffrage and all; and not only good, but that, ou th latter point particularly-, ha stands on the ground where Democrats stood in the days when Democracy meant poli tica houcsty. Horrible Murder in Scranton-The Mur derer Still at Large. Our City was startled yesterday fore noon by the anouuecment of the ruurde 01 Dr. .Joliu D. Duriiui. .1 Dun" and Throat Doctor, having hie office in Job Zeidler's new building. The Doctor was found about 10 o'clock a. ni in his room by Mr. (. II. Walters, who has an office on the game floor. When discovered he was lyiug on his bed room floor stiff and cold, with a little pool of blood near hi head. He was in his night clothes aud seemed to have falleu from tho bed to the floor, or been placed there. Alderman Jay, acting Coroner, sum moned the following persons to act as a Jury of Inquest, viz : Lorenz Zeidfor, Pa trick Scanlon, Patrick McGovern, Phillip Fries, A. Sweeney, G. II. Walters. The jtost-mortem examination was con ducted by Drs. Squires, Boyde and Mas scr. The examination was most thorough and complete. There were found several bruises about the person of the deceased, but none that would produce deeth, ex cept the contusiou on the back part of head, which was quite large aud the skull laid bare. A stne, weighing about two pouuds, was found near the bed with a few drops of blood on the smallest end. There was no particular evidence of a struggle to be seen about the room. The blow being on the back of the head, it is more than probable the wound was made by a person standing behiud the Doctor, and the blow quite or nearly stunued him. Tho hall door, which Mr. Zeidler him self fastened the night previous had been opened, the bolt being bent, and the catch sprung from fs fastening. In order to do this it was necessary to spring the top and bottom bolts and spring the door in ward. It is supposed that the person committing the deed had either Eecreted himself in tho building before the doors were locked, had a key to one of the back doors, or entered through a window iu the lower story ; then paesing up to the Doctor's room, awakened him, gained ad mittance and then killed him. The door to his office was unlocked when found and the key inside. The murder is supposed to havo been committed between three and four o'clock in the morning, as the little girl sleeping in an adjoining room who heard the cry ol "murder," says it was getting light iu her room at the time. The night hand on the lieyister informs us that he left the office at three o'clock, and he saw a person with a lantern standing in front of Zeidler's building, and'remaincd there wheu he passed into his boarding-house. The deceased is about 45 to 50 years of age ; is spare made and was not of a robust frame ; quiet aud inoffensive in his habits, and abstemious in his diet. It is supposed he had considerable money about him, but when discovered his watch (if he had one,)and xuoney were missing, except four cents. The Doctor, until latt Thursday, had a Mr. John Thornton, living in one of the upper Wards, as an assistant in his office. He left him, and on the Monday follow ing, Dr. Durkio wishing to visit Wilkes Barrc, he requested Mr. James O'Malia, living in the Jrd Ward, to atteud his oilice during his absence, which he did. On Tuesday afternoon, the Doctor not return ing, O'Malia gave the keys to Mr. Zeid ler, and about five o'clock he started for his home. The perpetrtor of this cold-blooded murder is unknown and at large. Suspi cions are directed to certain parties, but as yet no arrests have been made. Scran ton lii'jUter. . , .. Behind the Time.
