tf, m .rCL Jf'-ar ljc aklTcisomau, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1866. -The reply to "Justicla" is necessarily laid over until next week. ft7-We would call lbs atrention of Mil lers and Fanners to the advertisement of Cooper & Campbell, in another co'umn. " The friends of the Presbyterian Church are invited to a " Sociable" of the "Indies Society." at the house of Darius Dreher, on Friday evening, October 12 The Refreshments and Entertainment are for the bcneCt of the Society. 07-We would cull attention to the card of the Mount Vernon Hotel, in another col umn. The many friends of the genial pro prietors, in this section, will be pleased to learn where to find them on making their usual business visits to the city. ft"7-Ve were agreeably surprised a few davsojro, on going up town, at seeing the 0liir wiioantifiil Store Room which our friend C. B. Keller has finished off for him eelf, in the new building in course of com pletion on the old site of the Monroe Demo crat cfSce. It is one of the bnghte ornaments of our town; and the shelves loaded with superior Boots, Shoes,' Findings, &c , as well as his advertisement in this pa per, attest that Charley is possessed of busi ness as well as of building enterprise. Eve ry body'should take a lcok at Charley's store and examine his stock. He charges nothing fur showing goods. THE ELECTION. The election passed off very harnio rjiously in this county. We prefer giv ing results alone this week, leaving fig ures for nest week, when we can g them officially. . The Copper Johnsons carried the Governor, Congressman, Scu ator and Representative by the usual ca jority. Mcllhany was elected Prothono tor, Fisher, Register and Recorder, Eos sard, Auditor, and Holmes, District At torney, without opposition. The return indicate the election of DeYoung and Levering, the former by a largo majority Associate Judges, and Adams, Commis stoacr. John X. Stokes, Esq., of this bor ough, received bis commission on Tues day, re-appointing him to the Assistant Assessorship of the 5th Division, 11th Revenue District. The re-appoiutoicut "is a compliment well earned by an cfS--c;ent, and gentlemanly performance cl duty. The news of the appointment was received by both Democrats and Repub licans with the most lively satisfaction, -and was only distasteful to the few com prising the " Bread and Dutter Brigade." They have since born themselves gloomi ly, a.? though something serious had struck them. The appointment was wholly un expected by Mr. Stokes. KThe display of manufactures from the Stroudsburg Mills, at the Fair, must Lave been truly gratifying to every one -who has the manufacturing interests ol the county at heart. The bundles of cas- tiinere?, flannels, yarn, &c, attracted the atteution of every visitor, and the expres- tio'ns, " How beautiful!" and, " I bad no idea that they could make such goods" were more than once dropped, involunta rily, from the lips of connoisseurs in such matters. The display was at once, in re ality, a triumph of the geniou3 of the op xratives of the Mills, and of the liberality ff the Stockholders; and when the fact is more generally known that additional machinery in the Mills, is absolutely nee essary to meet the constantly increasing demand for the goods manufactured, it will Le a marvel indeed if other mills are not epeedily added to those already in existence. One of the neatest pieces of median ism, if not the very neatest, on exhibition, at the l air, during last wees, was a shift iag-rail, top buggy, from the manufacto ry of Mr. II. Bunnell, at Blairstown, N. -J. We never examined a vehicle of the ;kind which was so perfect in all its ap pointments, and in which excellence of mechanical skill, elegance of proportion, and beauty of fioish were all so well and go harmoniously blended. In no portion of the vehicle was there the least evi dence of the sacrifice of utility for the purpose of show, but with the substantial was united lightness and with the beau tiful durability. If that buggy had been the only avidence extant of Mr. Bunnell's .aptitude and skill as a manufacturer, it -would have been all sufficient to have placed him on the topmost round of skil ful carriage builders. We would advise those of our readers who design supply ing themselves uith any thing in his line to examine Mr. Bunnell's handiwork be fore purchasing elsewhere. His shop is in Blairstown, N. J. The committee, as will be seen by the Premium list, very -properly awarded Mr. B. a diploma. tSTl have faith in the people," said Andrew Johnson. "We stand by Con gress and its 'policy,'" aid the people on THE FAIR. The Seventh Annual Fair, of the Mon roe County Agricultural Society, came off on the 2d, Sd, 4th and 5th of October, nst. Better weather for tho lair could not have been manufactured to order. The air was cool, but not unpleasantly so, while the sun shone out with a splendour which put a glow of freshuess and glad ness upon every person and upon every: t'uinrrin and around the Fair Grounds. The display was not as as full as the most ardent friends of Agriculture, and its relatives, could desire, but there was a perfection about every thing exhibited, especially in the Fair House, which could not fail to afford encouragement for the agricultural reputatiou of Monroe, and lead to the hope for better things, in point of numbers, in' the future exhibitions of the Society. It would be a pleasant task for us to give a detailed descriptive ac count of the articles on exhibition, but want of time as well as room foThids! Al were excellent, and if the rule3 of the So. ciety had not prohibited it'all would have been worthy of premiums. Outside 0 the Fair House, the display was alraos meager to deserve meution. There weresome fine Horses, Sheep, Swine, Cat tie and Machinery, but Monroe County was not fairly represented in what was there; and it was a cause of regret to the many who attended, that, in the matter 0 neat cattle especially, our farmers take so little interest in the exhibitions of the Society, and so little pride in putting thei best feet forward. On the Course, the display was good The trials of speed were well contested and thousands looked on with breathless interest, while the Horses, entering into the spirit of the contest, strained every muscle to reach the goal first. We think an improvement could be made in the management tf this, most exciting, por tion of tbe exhibition. The rules shoulu be so altered as that there need be none of the disputing now too much an inci dent of the trot, and as to prevent the jockeying and trickery, which may be a fair and necessary belonging to the race course, but which, in the opinion of a largo majority of the people, are wholly cut of place on a course where the best qualities of the horse is to be made appa rent. To the contest for tho special pre mium of 3200 would these remarks es pecially apply. In f.tir, square trotting, and faithfulness in the performance of his work, the Miller horse was all that a good horseman could desire, while the horses opposed to him, exhibited no particular excellence, except in their obedience to the jockeying propensities of their dri vers. The means by which the Miller horse was defeated, were not such, in our opinion, and in the opinion of others who saw the running into and the passing on a run, as warranted the award of the first premium against him. It 13 the hope of all, who really love good stock, that the future awards may be made on the merits of bottom and speed, and not upon the jockeying skill of the drivers. The attendance at the Fair was about equal to that of last year, and, in a pecu niary point of view, it may be set down as a success. There was, also, a marked ab sence of the thimble riggers, and petty gamblers, who brought reproach on the Fair of last year. This was encouraging to the many who believe that morality would be no draw back to the interest of the Society '3 Exhibitions; but there was yet too much dealing in strong drinks not up to last year, but still too much of it. Another year should see this kind of trace abolished from the grounds. The Premiums awarded will be found in to-day's paper. The Drawing. The drawing of the Phoenix Gift Dis tribution, came off, as per previous an nouncement, at tho Fair House, on Fri day last. The drawing was made by a committee selected by the ticket holders, and wa3 proceeded with in the greatest fairness. It is somewhat singular that nearly all tbe best prizes were awarded to persons not residents of tho borough, butsuch was the action of fortune's wheel, and no one complains. HOW OFTEN WE HEAR-EXPRES-son from persons reading advertise ments of Patent Medicines, and in nine cases out often they may be right. It is over 1$ years since I introduced my medicine tae Venetian Liniment, to the public. I had no money to advertise it, so I left it for sale with a few druggists a nd storekeepers through a small section of the country, many takinf it with great reluctance; but I told them ta let any one have it, and if it did not do all I stated on my pamphlet, no one need par. for it. In some stores two or three bottles were taken on trial by persons present I was, by many, thought crazy, and that would be the last they would see of me. Bit I knew my medicine was no humbug. In about two months I began to receive - orders for more Liniment, some calling it my valuable Liniment, who had refused to sign a receipt when I left it at their store. Now my ealea are millions ot bottles yearly, and all for cash. I warrant it superior to any other medicine for the cure of Croup, Diirrhcea, Pj eentery, Colic, Vomiting, Spasms, and Se sickness, as an internal remedy. It i per fectly innocent to take internally, seeoata accompanying-each bottle, and externally for Chronic Rheumatism, Headache, Mumps Frosted Feet. Borises, Sprains, Old Sorcei, Swellings.
