It is also worthy of note that if the entire South had voted for Gen. In ah article ou the "Election Result," in the Monroe Democrat. ol the 18th, the Squire prophecies all sorts of hard things about the Administration, and insists up on it that "innocent Republicans" will jet "curse the man loud and deep they have chosen to rule over them. JSor, as the Squire and his party have indulged the luxury of cursing "the man loud ana deep," for the four years about expiring, we do not sec why he should grumble at 'innocent Republicans," if they, seeing occasion to do so, should iudulgc the lux- to come. 13ut wc do not see the point of the Squire's pro phesy in this respect. The past gives no data on which to base it. Democrats curse the man loud and deep" for the very reasons which induced "innocent Republicans" to vote for him; and as it is not at all probable that Father Abraham will veer around, so as to view things from a bogus-Democratic stand-point, it is not t all probable that "innocent Rcpubli cans" will feel like trying their hands at nursing. JL'atner Auraham would not con sent to the disruption of the Union. And when Rebels insisted upon it, he went to work like a man to thresh them into obe diencc to the constitution and laws. At this the Democratic friends of the Rebels got their "backs up," and got loud in their denunciations and threats. Seeing that this was affording "aid and comfort' to the Rebels in arms, Father Abraham felt that the time had come, and he did uot hesitate a moment in taking the Deni ocratic bull by the horns and holding him to something like quiet and decency. As was to be expected, this set Democrats to swearing, while "innocent Rcpubli cans" saw in it abundant reason for the most heartfelt rejoicing. As Father A braham will doubtless keep on in well do iug, and not weary until the last stubborn Rebel is whipped into the traces, we feel safe in venturing the counter-prediction, that while the cursing of the Democracy may continue on, and increase in intensi ty, that of the "innocent Republicans" will remain where the Squire found it in his own fertile brain. gain : By way of bluster and glori fication the Squire, says : "We have battled nobly against all the money powers of the country, against the thousands of officers and agents of the Ad ministration, against all banking interests, against all companies and monopolies, against all preachers and armies." If, as the old saying has it, "an honest confession is good for the soul," then must the Squire have felt particularly happy over the putting of his last paper to press. Your party did indeed battle against all the money powers of the country, and you battled with weapons furnished you by the money powers of Europe. With Jew Belmont at its head, the Democracy has been unceasing in its hostility to the stability of the currency of the country, iu hopes that by destroying that they might secure the success of their brethren in rebellion, and, at the same time, their own political success. You did indeed battle against all the officers and agents of the Administration. Secretlv it was done to be sure, lest the strong hand of the law should fasten on your throats j but it was done nevertheless as you say. You did battle against all bauking interests, and against all corporations and monopolies. And why ? Not because you hated them for any evil inherent in them, but because their interests led them to stand by the country in its adversity, and to spare them in 3Tour crusade agaiust right would have been to spare the government, which ycur Southern brethren in Democracy had de creed should be destroyed. You did in deed battle against all preachers who deemed love of country to be a part and parcel of pure and undefiled religion. Against such preachers, however, as did not hesitate to commit moral perjury, in order to secure vent for their copperhead - ism at the polls, of couie you did not bat tle, nor did you have a word to say. You did indeed battle against 'all Union armies against Grant's, Sherman's, Sherridan's and all others on the same side of the question ; but not a battle have you yet done against the armies in the llcbcl-ser- vice, or against their cause. And 'what in all this, Squire, have you to boast of; more than the Rebels have 1 They too fought our money powers, our officers and agents, our banking interests, our compa nies and monopolies, our preachers and our armies, so that you are not a whit be hind them, save in the manliness they exhibited in doing openly against the go vernment, precisely Jivhat you attempted to do under the specious pretext of exalt ed love for it And for what, Squire, was this similitude between the Democ racy and the Rebels maintained ? The Rebels pretend, and they have the evi dence of bravery on many a hard fought battle-field to sustain the pretense, that that they are fighting for nationality But what Squire are you fighting fpr 1 It cannot be for these, for you hate it to a greater extent than were ever be fore enjoyed by a people. The conclusion is, therefore, involuntarily forced upon us that you are willing the Constitution and Laws should be trampled in tle dust, and the Government be destroyed willing . , ,-i Tii.-i i a unro i;nniiRnp-p.n . . . ,i , i .-i TinfTT nt HrPRrtP.ntiai jsiectors. . vvr a that every degradation shoma ne neapiu j WhenMr. a prominent Democrat such circumstances, by hurling the "mon- i5at3 they shall sign and certify, and Low try to convince the South that they ey chancers" out of the Temple at Jeru- transmit scaled to the seat ot the govern- 0Ught to do it. 1 hat path to peace salcm- and we rejoice to know that the ment. of the United States, directed to might be trod with safety.
