07" The venerable Indian chief William Parker died recently on the T-onavanda Reservatioririn Genesee, county N. Y. He was the father of Captain Eli S. Parker, one bf General Grant's aids ; of Nicholson Parker, United States interpreter, and of Newton Parker. Caroline Parker, a graduate of the State Normal School, is his only daughter. Mr. Parker was on his war-path -as a scout in the war of 1812, and was disabled by a severe musket wound in the wrist at the sortie of Fort Erie. (rAt Washington lately, a soldier in at tempting to escape from a patrol, dodged in to a restaurant, and hid in a large box used tor steaming oysters. The lid closed with a eprihg lock, and soon steam was turned on, and Ihe would-be deserter beiran to wish he hadn't dodged the patrol, lie kicked and yelled until the colored cooks and attend ants concluded Satan had entered into the steamer, and when they, lifted up the lid, the fellow, thoroughly steamed, made a speedy escape. - The Postal- Order System. Tor some years past there has bceu an effort rnakimr iu the general post office denartment to secure the privilege of what is termed the Postal Order System". It is well known: now that Congress has at last authorize"!! its adoption,, and that it will go into effect as soon nstho matter can be properlysystematlzed. The prin cipal provisions of the law are as follows: All post offices the Postmaster Genera! inar deem suitable therefor will be desig nated '.'money order- oSices." From the deputy postmasters' orders may be pro cured by depositing any amount within the limits previous!' named, and these will be made payable by the deputy post master of any other money order oliice. The rate to be charged are. For an or der for one and not exceeding ten dollars, ten cents; for an order for ten aud not exceeding twenty dollars, fifteen cents; more than twenty dollars, twenty cents. An order once issued may be changed by the paymcut of an additional foe, but will not be deemed valid when uot pre sented within ninety days from date, un less by direction of the Postmaster Gcue ral. If it be lost or destroyed, a dupli cate may be issued upon ccrUdu state ments aud certificates made to the head of the department. The money is to be payable to the person designated on the face of the order; or that person may in dorse it aud payment will be made to an other, on proof of the genuineness of the signature; but further indorsements or transfer would have the effect of cancell ing the order; aud in such case the hold er can obtain the money only on the di rection of the Postmaster General. DANGER. There's danger, fortune may exchange Her smiles for dreary frown, That castles founded on her whims, May quickly tumble down. Danger, that pleasures brimming cup, If eager drank, jnay fall ; Danger, that from the highest round" Of fame's ladders, man may fall Banger, that hatred may put out Love's glowing, blissful fire. Danger discordant notes may sound From friendship's lyre. Danger, ambition's golden wings, May melt too near the sun. Danger that in a race for power, A traitors doom be won, Danger that words the errand-boys Of thought if wrongly sent May, for some latent passion, make An undesirous vent, Danger that silence-be construed Oft into guilt, or shame, That blot, for want of words, may rest Upon the fairest name, Danger that' men will get poor clothes, We think there's none at all, If the' only purchese at the place Known as Pyle's Fashion Hall, Opposite the old Euston Bank, were you will find the largest aud best stock of Cloth ing, ready made and made to order, in Eas- ton.
